Wow. I got a lot out of this analysis, Erin. Possibly because I tend to kind of "gloss over" She when I'm thinking about season 1. I tend to think "oh yeah, some funny scenes and a real obvious premise" and move on. But not true - not so obvious, as you point out several times.

Loved your opening remarks about "the greater good". When I did my re-watch of this ep, I was really impressed by Joss and Co. not taking the easy road and making Jhiera a cartoon perfect "white hat" - it would have been easy to make her character simply a cypher, a saint. Making her a real person with flaws and errors in judgement was a risk, but a necessary one. Your comparisons to Buffy and Angel's struggles with "acceptable losses" was very apt - trust and connection the key to success. A lesson that Jhiera still does not totally embrace even by the end of the episode.

Liked your description of the connection between Angel and Wes. Particularly how you extended it into season 5.

Even in Season 5, it could be argued that Angel’s kamikaze plan to take on the Circle of the Black Thorn was reflected in Wesley’s belief that without Fred, little in the world was worth enjoying.

I hadn't looked at it in quite this way before, and I appreciated the perspective.

Finally - power, control, examples of heat and ice. Very neat analogies, Erin. Because it's all about power. (Plus, quoting Baudelaire - bonus! )

Thanks! I've been very dismissive of this episode as well, for the same reasons you stated; rewatching mainly for the hilarious dancing sequences. But damn that Joss Whedon, even the seemingly "throwaway" episodes have something a-brewing beneath the surface.

Still am surprised they got away with that "surprisingly firm" comment from Wes. Apparently Joss and Co share our level of maturity. Thank God.

Yeah, I just wanted to make you guys think I was smart with the Baudelaire quoteage (tee hee; it worked!). Actually, I've noticed that songs and other artwork in both Buffy and Angel usually are thematic red flags. I love layered television! When am I going to get Season 6 already?
