I forgot to mention, back along where the discussion centered on the ewwwww factor of Buffy/Angel and why it's pretty much missing from Buffy/Spike: by the time Buffy and Spike have sex, they've known each other for five years, and have been dearest enemies and close aquaintances for nearly two. What Xander and others see as stalking, I find entirely consistent with Spike's actual lack of any real social skills- see the whole first act of "Crush"; he's actually a whole lot LESS mature and sure of himself than Buffy when he can't fall back on the Big Bad persona.
There's a whole lot of that relationship I find repellent, mostly on Buffy's part, although Spike has some seriously questionable moments. The beat down in the alley in "Dead Things" is the apex of Buffy's badness, but I find the form of her confession to Tara : "Why do I let Spike do those things to me." to be essentially dishonest and a frank attempt to duck responsibility for her own behavior. It's consistent with severe depression, but it's also one of the habits of thought that depressives have to break to begin to get healthier.
Now, what am I going to do about brain input tonight? I've given up on books for the present, and no Angel. Well, time for a tape runthrough, I suppose.
Julia, HEE! I'm first!

All of Buffy's friends know what Spike did to her (the AR, chaining her in crypt) but do they know about the things she did to him? Was this ever addressed? Caraleigh, who is waiting for the cold medicine to kick in. Later- well I'm comfortably numb now. Going to bed.

Since it is past midnight, I will post the first "official" HAPPY THANKSGIVINGIn addition to family, turkey and football we have an additional Thanksgiving tradition.
Many years ago (at least 22 because it was pre-children), when we first moved to Nashville, Jim's sister has in grad school at Vanderbilt so we invited her and a bunch of displaced college grad students for Thanksgiving. (We made long drives north to PA to the parents/(later grandparents) every summer and Christmas so Thanksgiving was our big stay in town and be our own adults holiday. We also invited people with no family in the area--either college connected or single folks from church.)
Back to story. After dinner all of us 20-somethings were lolling (quite literally) on the floor in front of the TV when my husband announced that we all needed some post-stuffing exercise. We live about 2 miles from a fire spotting tower. It's on the top of a hill and goes up the equivalent of about 6-8 stories so you can see all the way to downtown Nashville (about 12 miles) and even in Nov the foliage can be quite spectacular. So--we climbed it and for many many years afterward every Thanksgiving we climbed the firetower (even the kids--resulting in moments of huge terror for me.)
Well, several years ago they started locking off the tower (probably due to insurance issues and because kids has taken to climbing it on Friday and Sat nites, most likely drunk).
By then my son had begun running track and his coach got him, and by extension us, involved in running something called the "Boulevard Bolt." Runners start at one end of Belle Meade Boulevard, run 2.5 miles to the opposite end, turn around and run back. All entry fees go to charity. (Look up Belle Meade, TN 37205--you'll find it on lists of "Top Ten Richest Suburbs in America"--not country musicians--old, old Southern money. The Gores live there, but are relative paupers. Several branches of the Frists (as in Senator) live there--and are decidedly not paupers.) So--it's a gorgeous run.
It's grown to more than 6000 entrants, drawing serious middle distance runners from all over the U.S.
So--at 6:30 tomorrow this morning I have to wake up two college kids, (Eldest having been up for 72 hours completing 30 page paper; middle child--boy--got home from airport at 10:20, left at 11:00 to see friends, not in yet;), 16 year old, and MYSELF (who is clearly up at 2 am) and go out to "run" 5 miles. (Forecast--"high" 40's and rain) before comming home to stuff and cook 23 pound turkey. Ya gotta love those family bonding experiences.
Our Thanksgiving traditions--invite "familyless" friends to dinner and either pre- or post- dinner engage in bizarre, potentially painful exercise experience. Yay!
Oh yeah, and then we watch parades, which is less fun than it used to be because there is less "parading" and more staged "performance commercials."

Caraleigh, who is waiting for the cold medicine to kick in. Later- well I'm comfortably numb now. Going to bed. I don't think so. Buffy got a pass; y'know, she had a soul, she was the Slayer, okay to beat up the lovesick vampire, etc.
I don't think Buffy ever told Angel about the AR; good thing, too. [glow=brown,2,300]HAPPY TURKEY DAY!
Enjoy and be thankful!!![/glow]

Several years ago, the mom of one of my friends and several of her running buddings were cited for taking up too much of Belle Meade Boulevard when they were out for their morning run. Imagine a group of well-bred, well-to-do Junior Leaguers and you're got the picture. But you must add to the picture the fact that these are all serious runners: Beth's mom has done the NY Marathon. Anyway, I'm glad to hear that all is well in S'cubiedom, what with Josh's Dad doing ok, Vicky out of the hospital in time for Turkey Day, and Piper starting to walk. I remember the first time Halley even just managed to stand up on her own and the look of pure triumph and glee on her face (and I have the picture to back it up). So, HAPPY THANKSGIVING, EVERYONE(from England, otherwise known as the land whose groceries do NOT stock pumpkin pies!) Watch some football for me!

Watched Pangs this morning on FX. I don't know if this has ever been addressed, but what if the Danger Angel sensed was Spike? This is the beginning of Spike hanging around the gang and eventually leads to her developing feelings for Spike. Those feelings would certainly seem dangerous to Angel.

I'll have to think on it a bit. Anne, who is heartily bored, doing laundry and waiting for other people to wake up. Our Ritual Sacrifice isn't until tomorrow, and the house is a mess. HAPPY THANKSGIVING!

I know I'm in the minority here, so I'm really thankful that the tomatoes can't be tossed through the internet lines, but I never felt the "ewwww" factor in Angel and Buffy's relationship. I never analysed the age difference in the beginning, but I can see now that Buffy might have been attracted to an older man because of her father issues. Angel was drawn to Buffy because of her youth and goodness, something he lost a long time ago. But at the time, all I saw was Buffy and Angel. Two souls tossed together, helping each other, understanding each other. Neither of them wanted their calling. Buffy always fought the Slayer title. Angel certainly didn't ask to be cursed with a soul. But they both dealt with it. I saw their mutual attraction as believeable because of this. At the beginning, Angel and Buffy both fought their mutual attraction. But circumstances kept bringing them together until their feelings for each other were too strong to resist. Angel probably should have been stronger and did try to leave. I didn't feel any ewwww. But I hurt for their star-crossed love, because their love wasn't enough to overcome the reasons why they couldn't be together. I saw the characters' souls as joining and didn't see the age difference as a factor or as "ewwww". As for Spike, I loved Buffy and Spike together. I loved watching Spike grow and change because of it. I have a friend who was really angry about it. I thought it made a good story and looked at it from Buffy's point of view. I also always saw Buffy's relationship's with the men/vampires in her life as a way for her to grow. Not a bangel or a spuffy, but a plotter, Karen
