My lj post about Lost:
What a trip that was. I had to rewatch some stuff this morning just to be sure I actually understood everything which I don't of course but still. Lots of great moments. On to my Lost list.
Things I loved:
1. Desmond and Penny together. I adore this ship. Adore. 2. They named their adorable child Charlie. Awwww. 3. The reveal of Widmore on the Island. Wow. Awesome. 4. Speaking Latin. Others 101. I love Juliette. 5. Sawyer. 6. Desmond not telling Widmore anything. Nice. 7. Richard. One creepy guy. But awesome.
Things I'm confused about:
1. So Ellie = Eloise Hawking = Daniel's Mother? Is that right? 2. I'm a little confused over who was on the bed. I think I might have nodded off a bit during that. Is this the girl Daniel was doing experiments on? Is this Theresa? 3. Who exactly is dead now? Are people like Rose and Bernard dead?
I didn't miss the six at all. Well I never miss Jack and Kate but I thought I might miss getting more input on Hurley/Ben. But this episode just perked right along. Anyway, I need to go read some theories and summaries and have someone explain all the parts I'm confused on. But kudos to Lost for another great episode.

I'm not sure if Ellie was specifically identified as a younger version of Daniel's mother, but I really really like the idea. 2. That was Theresa, the girl Daniel was doing experiments with/on, in the bed. 3. Rose and Bernard are not dead so far as we know; if they were, you would have heard my cry of anguish from Florida. I choose to believe they're with another group of folks somewhere else on the creek.

From Doc Jensen of EW:
My “Arrow” Theory. Adam mentioned this in his recap. Have you noticed the recurring arrow symbolism this season? Episode 1: Pierre Chang produces the orientation film for a Dharma station called “The Arrow.” Episode 2: The Left Behinders are attacked by flaming arrows. And now, Episode 3: Arrows everywhere, in the text (see: the Others’ archery brigade) and the subtext. A leaking or missing hydrogen bomb is known as a “Broken Arrow” event in military parlance. In physics, the “Arrow of Time” is the name of a body of theories pertaining to the nature of time; the term “broken arrow” is used to characterize an idea like time loops. Google “broken arrow” and you’ll get any number of movies, TV shows and songs about Native Americans… and wouldn’t you know, “Jughead” was a peek into the past of the Island’s indigenous peeps, the Others. But the coolest arrow connection comes via the Other cutie with the shot gun, British accent, and terse line readings: Ellie. Short for Eleanor, which is French for “the Other.” (Or so wikipedia tells me; I don’t speak it. Me stupid American.) On a whim, I combined “Ellie” and “Eleanor” and “Arrow,” and came back with an awesome connection: Ellie Arroway, the heroine of Carl Sagan’s novel Contact, which was adapted into the Jodie Foster film of the same name. I’m going to leave it to you to explore the significance, but Sagan’s story certainly resonates with Lost themes, and perhaps functions as a clue to wormhole theory.

I don't really think the show would kill off Rose and Bernard without any actual notice but they do seem hellbent on clearing/killing all the extraneous characters.

Hmm. I'm guessing that this episode has something to do with the military?
Teaser
Goats!!!
Are we back in Thailand?
The Doctor? Oh, an actual doctor. Not the Doctor Doctor.
Penny's pregnant. This happened 9 months after they got off the island?
And here's the little toddler now.
About whether Widmore will find them.
Meanwhile, back on the island.
Charlotte's condition is getting worse.
Hey, is Charlotte Daniel's daughter? I mean his daughter from when he worked for DHARMA back in the 70s and 80s.
More extras go boom.
And we've met the flaming arrow people. And they know Daniel.

Part I
So it was a new memory. Hmm.
Desmond promises not to go back to the island. Which means he probably will.
There are the rest of the people. And they've taken prisoners.
What language was that? Latin. The Others native language is Latin? OK then.
US soldiers.
Richard. Of course.

Part II
Desmond at Oxford.
No record of the Faradays at Oxford.
Daniel's abandoned lab. I wonder if Daniel and his mom don't belong to any time at all.
Other people have been trying to find Daniel, too?
What did Daniel do to who?
Ah, the US was doing nuclear testing on the island. That probably has influenced the assorted wackiness.
Weren't Charlotte and Miles sort of into each other last season? Why are Daniel and Charlotte now an item?
Others 101. Heh.
Jones and Cunningham.
That went well.
Shifting loyalties.

Part III
Back in Oxford.
Desmond tries to go for incognito and ends up looking preppy.
Theresa. So this woman is also unstuck in time.
Mr. Widmore is Daniel's benefactor. Ruh roh!
So this is the 1950s.
One of them, one of us again.
Richard's always been here.
Why are you so interested in Richard? Well, he's fuckin' mysterious, that's why.

Part IV
And we have an episode title! Bomb is named Jughead to go with Little Boy and Fat Man, I presume.
A crack in the bomb? Or foaming asbestos. Which ever.
Daniel's going to hook up with this chick, isn't he?
Oh! Oh! They bury the bomb in concrete and that becomes The Swan Station/The Hatch (Michael remarked about the thickness of the concrete and the blast doors in the second season) and the pushing the button thing is to keep the reaction from proceeding, the plane crash was due to the EM radiation buildup, and the implosion of the hatch was due to the bomb actually going off (that also explains why the sky turned purple and shorted out communications)). The high radiation levels would explain high fertility of males and reproductive problems of the women. Booyah! I suppose the magicalness of the island is the reason why everyone's not dying of radiation poisoning.
Sawyer plays cowboy. This will go well. Then Juliet shows up. That's better.
Back in Oxford.
Oh, and he goes meets Widmore. Way to keep a low profile, there, Desmond.
Widmore wants to know if Penny is safe. Right, because Ben threatened to kill her.
Are we going to run into Young Widmore in the 50s? Well, no because he's British, so he wouldn't be in the US Army.
Farady's mom is in LA. Which naturally will put Penny in proximity to Ben, which is the exact opposite of what Widmore wants. Ooh!
Oh, there he is, Young Widmore!! Double Booyah!

Coda Desmond back on the boat. Desmond lies to Penny about Daniel's mom. That's not good. Oh, good. Penny can tell. They named the boy Charlie. Richard gets the compass back. I love the circularity of it. Locke catches up Richard on the timeloopyness. A very specific process for selecting leaders and it starts at a young age. 1954. Locke tells Richard that he'll be born in 2 years. So that's how Richard knew. Charlotte's crashing.

I just want to say that despite being a low maintenance person, I'm really coveting Richard's fabulous hair.

I don't know about anyone else, but I'll be keeping an ear open for references to Archie, Betty, and Veronica... That would have made for an entertaining episode, too.

"I got a message memory from the past that just happened, telling me I'm the only one who can save them all" is really not all that crazy considering the rest of the island hijinks, Desmond. Just sayin'. Heh! Where are the rest of their people? Well, they're kicking some of your other people's asses. "'Cuz they're Others." Well, duh! Heeeee! I love that Daniel's only question is "did any of them happen to mention what year it is". Ah, Richard. So pretty. So ageless. So eyelinered.Oooooooooh! Uncomfortable hidden info is popping out right and left. "I assume you came back for your bomb?" Didn't want the girlfriend to know about that, did you?

Back to Desmond and Penny. Desmond facing the fact that he's particularly loosely-glued to the timeline.... He is SO not gonna be back by dark. But he didn't promise. man we're losing lostaways like flies. From twenty on the beach down to five plus juliet, locke, and Sawyer. Who IS this chick, anyways? New M1 Garand. And they're talking in Latin. Great. So the Others used Latin as a day-to-day language. So the Others came from the U.S. Army. Interesting. and Farraday has no problem whatsoever accepting that Miles speaks with dead people. Wait, are there two factions amongst the Others? The one that Richard was with is the same one as the ones that Juliet, Locke, and Sawyer have prisoner? And we haven't seen the ones that set the Claymores? Oh I get it! There are Others. And Other Others. And Dharma-ites. And the army. And some stranded scientists. And the left-behind plane-folk. And the Clan of the Teddy Bear. And the bears - can't forget about the bears. But in all seriousness, I like this layering over time of different groups of people trying to control the island and becoming absorbed by it.

The guy who snapped his buddy's neck is id'ed as Jones on his uniform... which was also Jughead's last name. I *knew* those names were significant.
