Hmm... 316 isn't one of the numbers. Teaser Jack's eye. Back at the beginning of the pilot? I totally thought that too!! Heee! A variant on the "hey, it's that guy/gal" game. Spot the important island landmark. He so totally would. I mean, giant swinging pendulum? I love that we now have an example of a Dharma "station" someplace else and established before they found the island. Makes me wonder how many of them are scattered around. And how many Dharma-ites are still around too, all over the world.

Part II Mrs. Hawking and Jack. In her office? What does the rest of the world think this church is all about? Does anyone wonder that there are never any church services? What if some one in the neighborhood wanted to pop in and pray? A letter. Locke's suicide note. Or "suicide" note? I'm leaning toward "suicide" note, but I'll probably be proven wrong. ;D And mostly it's just 'cuz I suspect Ben of having a hand in things. Ooooh, I hadn't thought of it that way . . . Maybe for the people who are inevitably gonna end up dead or screwed up some way as they implement their plan? I mean, if they "fix" one thing that went wrong because of them leaving the island, I'll bet the fix just messes up something else. Nothin's free in the island universe, I'm thinkin'. ;D mass s'cubie brain-share! Heeeee! And after the spanking angsting, the oral sex!

Oh. Oh. Kate and Jack also found a dead couple in a cave near the lake, didn't they? Wonder who that was. Yikes - the more answers we get, the more questions pop up. The lamppost pendulum reminded me of Willow's locator spell pendulum. (Also, it reminded me of what you use over a pregnant woman's tummy to predict the sex of the baby.) The island must have jumped to the North Pole at one point - hence the polar bear. The idea popped into my head yesterday that the bodies in the cave are Rose and Bernard. Willow had a locator spell pendulum? I've never heard of using a pendulum to determine the sex of a baby. Interesting. Yeah, I figure that that's how the polar bears ended up on the island, too. Must have been quite a shock to jump from an arctic climate to a tropical one. OMG OMG OMG! What a cool idea if Rose and Bernard could have been "Adam and Eve". That would mean they died while back in time and then actually were rediscovered later / earlier by their younger selves (well, by Rose, since Bernard wasn't there when they found them). That would be awesome and creepy.

If the return of the Losties was meant to stop the time fluctuations, then what is Jin doing driving a Dharma truck and wearing Dharma coveralls?
Either our gang has fallen into the 70's or is this a new timeline and the Dharma initiative was never destroyed (very confusing), or the fact that there weren't enough Losties on the plane meant that the time fluctuations are continuing. Do they need Desmond and Aaron or Walt?
Or something else!
Also interesting - DeadChristian said definitively that he is not Jacob, didn't he, or at least referred to Jacob as someone else. I can't remember - did Christian say that he himself had talked to Locke in the cabin, or that Locke had talked to Jacob?
Who is Jacob? Wonder if we'll ever know.
G.
Me? I'm thinking Locke stopped the jumping when they were all still back in the Dharma-time. And now they're stuck there. And maybe then Jack and Hurley and Kate and so on were . . . were like sucked back in time to meet up with them, rather than just fall down to the Island in their own present time-trame? **brain hurts**

More from Doc: Ben was lying, of course. We know from ''The Man Behind the Curtain'' that Ben's mother died during childbirth. He saw a vision of her on The Island, during his hard Dharma adolescence, when the only parenting he got was neglect and abuse from his sad, heartbroken father. When Ben saw his mother, all he wanted to do was run away with her…whatever she was. But she said ''No. Not yet.'' So...when?
Ulysses suggests an answer. To be clear, there were several moments in ''316'' when the story mirrored Joyce's book, much in the same way Joyce's novel mirrored Homer's epic poem. For example, the scene with Kate in bed lost in thought, then greedily kissing Jack, echoes the final chapter of Ulysses, Molly Bloom lies in bed, lost in thought, and chooses her haunted husband hero (read: Jack) over the studly beefcake (read: Sawyer). Another parallel: At one point, Molly's husband, Leopold Bloom, finds himself traveling in a carriage as part of a funeral procession. He is familiar with almost everyone, except one mysterious figure, which the narrative makes a point of doting upon, even though his identity is never resolved. Shades of: The castaways in their own corpse-hauling carriage, Ajira Airlines Flight 316, complete with mystery characters to be revealed later. Maybe. Whoa! Well, I would not be surprised by this, what with the writers referencing various books and stories all along, in subtle and not-so-subtle ways. But Lost combined with Ulysses? We'll be drowning in symbolism!!

Am woefully behind on reading all your posts much less responding.
Quick note to say check out Doc Jensen's pre "316" episode analysis: More about the Narnia connections especially Prince Caspian, which in a recent complete Narnia edition apparently starts on page 316.
Love the Spanish comic book.
Loved Desmond walking through Foucault's pendulum as if he transcends time.
Jin's long hair - he looked like the Dharma guy who was chopping a tree in front of Locke last season.
Daniel meeting Charlotte in her childhood: reminds me of The Time Travelers Wife. Hope we'll see that happen.

And now we've got at least three places with this special EM energy, the island, The Lampost, and that place in Australia where Rose and Bernard went.

I hadn't thought of it that way, but it was a nice visual of what they've been telling us about Desmond (and Daniel, too, I guess - being linked and all).

Further to the pendulum: The idea of the swinging pendulum and the crossing of arcs reminded me of an article that was linked from (IIRC) zap2it.com early last year about "mirror matter moon" that proposes the island as an alternate existance within the space of the earth but intersecting on an orbit. I found the site again but it looks like it has been updated/altered. try www.mirrormattermoon.blogspot.comleftylady
