Discovered new thing about Caroline with this episode. She believed both humans AND animals have souls. Maybe her belief was as simple as the Buddhist "If it flinches, it has a soul", maybe she was an Animist and thought everything has a soul. And now, of course, the big question is does Caroline have a soul? Does anything? Is there even such a thing as a soul? Also, I'm starting a Dollhouse drinking game. The rules are simple. You drink every time Topher says "That shouldn't have happened."
Bwah!I read a comment elsewhere that criticized this episode for being a re-run of "Band Candy." I can see their point, but I really liked this episode and the Band Candy-esque nature of it was done in a fresh way. If you turn this show a different way, you can also see shades of The Initiative, testing and taking control of test subjects (demons). The Rossum lab was testing and manipulating animals, and the Rossum Corporation is using the Dollhouse to do the same to humans.

It was also like "Spin the Bottle" from "Angel", too. With a sprinkling of OMWF. A few secrets came out.

Before I read what everyone else wrote: I actually like Carolyn less now that I know she was an animal-rights activist of that sort. I mean, yes, she stumbled across way more than animal experimentation, but I really dislike the sort of person who thinks it's kosher to break into research labs in order to expose the research/set the animals free.
Just a knee-jerk reaction...in my line of work, we're actively frightened of those people. Very rarely, they blow stuff up or burn stuff down.

No matter how much I love dogs, ever since I read the history of the discovery of insulin (and the lives of the diabetics who were trying to hang on prior to its discovery) I've been quite conflicted. And the dogs had to be killed to study their pancreases, not just "experimented on." But, you know..................... insulin. There has got to be some kind of balance. Was talking to a research scientist at Vandy recently and she said she feels for young people entering the field who can have grants and research delayed for weeks or months by the paperwork necessary. Of course -- research on baby fetuses' brains --- not so good. Maybe Adelle was a professor of Caroline's?

Nice episode title. Teaser Ooh, back at that recruitment scene from the pilot. Your life for your life. Rossum Corporation. Why did you pick me? Caroline, you picked us. She did? Is Adelle being genuine here or manipulative. 2 years history. Hmm. Flashback. Research lab. What the hell is this? Lab experiment gone awry? Laughing gas bugs? Yikes. Memory drug. Ahh... The pharmaceutical company using their drug on people to protect and promote their interests. I'm guessing that Topher was one of these grad students at one point. Different people react to drugs in different ways. That's what so exciting about drugs. Not that I would know. Dolls are immune to this drug that I've entirely glossed over the description of. Echo. Ah, this is the guy from the pilot. So a recurring "engagement" then. Ballard and Mellie. Oh, all this stuff has been taking place in the present. I like taking care of you. Mmm-hmm. A Russian thug? Ballard's still on the case. Mmm-hmm. The Dollhouse and the Search for The Missing Vial. Topher made Victor outrank Security Guy. Hee! Echo and whatshisname. Echo gets memory flashes of the building? And she just leaves him there. Hee.

Part I A few years ago. Nice specificity there. Oh, this is Caroline. So she was an activist. I was right. Mellie in the Dollhouse. Being injected with the antidote. Adelle ranting. I find the relationship between Topher and Adelle really interesting. Echo on campus. Where is Boyd and why didn't he notice that she's not where she's supposed to be? Talking to Victor. Oh, here's Boyd. He is on top of things. I liked that moment where Topher holds up his hand for Mellie to slap and she just lightly places her hand on his. Let the hallucinations begin! The human experimentation conspiracy theory. I can get in, I just have to listen to myself. Hmm. The code did not work on Echo that time. Interesting. Love Boyd's reaction here. Did not maintain control of that situation.

Part II Flashback. Ah, animal rights activists. Monkeys should not be guinea pigs. *Snerks* Present. Now you're experts. Four hours ago you were discussing your love for applesauce. Heh. Security Guy got infected. This should be interesting. This is unbelievable. What part was believable before? Hee! There's no way that Don would consciously decide to have fun. It's airborne. I could have told you that. This is a great scene. BWAH!! Sarcastic? Unfeeling? British? Imagine me just ing at every line here. Echo and Nice Guy. Planning a break in. Back in the Dollhouse. Drugged Topher is not too different from Natural Flavor Topher. I did not need to see Topher in his boxers. Music does something? Or is Boyd just going wacky too? Back on campus. Some one from Caroline's past! Back in the dollhouse. Making choices and facing consequences. We live with them. And then we die with them. I know why Echo went to Fremont. To punish you? To let Caroline punish me. Mellie is affected to? Oh, she's got the imprint back. She's not tripping, she's glitching. Great.

Part III Flashback. Planning the demonstration. Steam tunnels. Boyfriend has second thoughts. Lily Foundry. Ah, the company that makes sewer grates. Sneaking past the security guards is like playing a video game. That makes a lot of sense actually. Touchy feely Security Guy. Oh, Dominic. Now Sierra's glitching. Oy. And now Victor too. Great. What kind of memories is Victor flashing on? How on earth are they going to get out of this one? Back in the Dollhouse. November. Drug will break down eventually. Well, that's good news. First guy was injected by somebody. Hmm. Ohhh, this guy is in on it! I didn't see that coming. But what is his game exactly?

Part IV
Flashback.
Stumbling onto the brain imprinting stuff.
Interrupted by the security guard.
Back in the present.
Ah, he's a corporate spy.
Flashing back and forth.
Boyd to the rescue. Aww...

Coda. Flashback. This is how Echo got recruited. Present. Awkward moment. Tying up loose ends. We got drugged and started acting like idiot children. It happens. Don't I know it. Mellie's moving out. "Debbie's" moving in. I'm guessing that's Sierra. Ohhh, recruiting Corporate Spy Guy. Nice. Adelle's going to make an offer. An offer he can't refuse!! So at what point are they going to do this with Ballard?

Damn, they sure were right about the show picking up major steam after the 6th episode. I just hope that enough people stuck it out till this point.

So the Dollhouse is paid for or financed by the Rossum corporation. Caroline did some sneakin' around at the Rossum building at whosiwhatsis university. I am gonna throw this out there: Caroline is Adelle's daughter. and that outfit Alice is wearing is disturbingly adorable. Now that would be deliciously twisted! At first I thought that Topher might be distantly related to Adelle or some other big up person, but now I think that he was just a student who started working in the labs or IT support or something and turned out to be useful.

Caroline and her planning. And boyfriend is urging some caution. Oh, Lilly Foundry! The grate into the sub-layers! Nice. "How can you not remember something and remember it at the same time?" It is very intriging to compare this, where she has an implanted personality that is "remembering" with the time when she was wiped and learning (in the vault). "I am so sorry that I tried to kill you." Heeee! "I tried to burn you to death. Who does that?" (Very cool to see how each of the Dollhouse management are reacting to this drug. And good to remember that the drug strips away their inhibitions, so what we're seeing is very much what is really inside them, yes?) "Whatever you think you did, I'm over it. Water. Bridge. Under." ;D This not all there is to him. Look at that suit. Not a nice doggy. Heee! And he is very smart to make them all turn in their drugs. Sierra. Whoa. She's remembering - she's "glitching". Damn and now he is too. This is sooooo not good. Not. Good! "I am your superior!!" "In every way. Go check." "You think I float around? Like a balloon untethered to your muck?" (That? Is a very very telling sentence, that is.) The drug hitting the actives and later is what will help him fix it, yes? "Is that the drug? You found it. You found it really fast." Oh, crap. Is Sam is the guy who did it? Yeah, we wouldn't want those ending up in the wrong hands now, would we?

What the hell connection did DeWitt have with Caroline before she became Echo?? Ah, and now all the awkward post-drug-induced-wackiness conversations. Hmmm. Dom is uncharacteristically sub . . . dued. (See what I did there? With the word play? **facepalms over my dorkiness**)Ah, Mellie. Ah, Paul. Yeah, it's probably better for her to leave. What with her being a programmable killer and all. OMG OMG OMG!! They nabbed Sam for the House too? So, is he following the same path that Caroline did? Yes - same ploy. They'll give him a "new life / better life" if he gives them 5 years of his life. "I'm going to make you an offer." (One he can't refuse, eh?) ooooooh next week omg looks like it's gonna be a hellof a show I thought it was funny!
