According to the Bobman, we have achieved tv-ness. Honestly, what more could anyone ask? He even uses Buffy-like phraseology. I'm thinking you better hold on tight to the Bobman, because I'm about ready to steal him away from you. ;D

Greetings from lovely Springboro, OH, right outside Dayton. A lovely fall afternoon in Ohio caps off a very Halloweeny drive through the state routes of Southern Ohio, to transport me from SE Ohio to SW Ohio - the dried out stalks in the cornfields, the wind whipping multi-colored autumn leaves across the roadway, the late blooming mums, the winding, hilly roads, the scampering squirrels (making lots of rotten little squirrels), crisp and sunny weather, the light smell of burning leaves somewhere . . . all good. Am visiting the mother-in-law for our close together birthdays, as I do every year. The girls and one of my sisters are with me. The girls got my MIL some nice things and a pretty card and are treating her very much like a grandma, which I think she really likes.

Met up with my MLK girlfriends (our kids all graduated together) at the Bicentennial Mall and Farmer's Market. Came home to find Vandy leading #8 Arkansas 21-7. Eventually we lost 31-28 because of a fumble and the fact that our field goal kicker is the weakest link (couldn't make a straight shot no wind clear day field goal from 30 yards to tie). But we were IN the game toe to toe through-out which is extremely encouraging. And are 4-4 for the season. With 4 games to go that are potentially winnable. (Well, AT Florida next Sat is a stretch.)

So: here we are past the World Series, and The Real Fall TV season starts. Anyone else watch the beginning of the end for Chuck on Friday? Wondering how long it will be for Chuck to figure ot that being the Intersect was not why he was so good at being a spy, given how Morgan + Intersect is still Morgan as a doofus. 3D life continues to be overrun with chickens; I've got to finish the grow-out pen for the 14 babies, somehow, by next weekend: they're already really too big for their current containers but just getting done with regular chores is more than I can do without over-doing; on the other hand, the amount of supervision other people take to do what are explicitly their damned chores is just more work. I'm exhausted to the point of having no tact by the end of the day because people (especially Franklin) do not listen, do not think, especially do not think about how their actions effect the stated goals for the day, and in general are just total idiots, and not even useful idiots. Julia, left with stuff to do today and tomorrow which should have been finished Friday so we could get some rest.

How about those Cardinals? Loved the story about the Cardinal fan that snagged the winning Game 6 home run ball, and the subsequent pictures of he and his buddy (who had his Cubbie t-shirt on) with the Cardinal player, Freese, who hit it. So funny. Spring - love your perfect autumn day. Happy birthday to you and your MIL! Also - Go Buckeyes!!! What a game yesterday. Did you catch it or record it? The Huskers beat Michigan State handily, too. for Huskers/Buckeyes in the league championship game in Indiana.

So I've been thinking about the Whedonverse, particularly since I'm dying to get back to writing about Angel, and just yesterday finished my Dollhouse rewatch. I have a bit in my thesis about the connection between Firefly and Dollhouse, particularly this video, which used to be part of the "official" Rossum website and features a blue sun rising over the earth, which seems to indicate a connection between the Dollhouse technology and what was done to River. Yet it occurs to me that the real connections between Buffy/Angel/Firefly/Dollhouse is on a deeper level. There's a trajectory here: Buffy as bildungsroman, and so necessarily on a smaller scale (who am I, where do I fit), but Angel, Dollhouse, and Firefly build on that into a much broader scope. All three have a main antagonist (Wolfram and Hart/Blue Sun/Rossum) that are a faceless (to a great extent) corporate entity. Yet... For Angel, W & H was all about him; they were a corporate law firm serving many clients and influencing events, but they dedicated a lot of resources to him. For the crew of Serenity, River filled that function; she was an important commodity to Blue Sun/the Alliance, but unlike the smallish cast of Angel, Firefly's larger crew (and scope) meant that for the others, they were merely cogs to these greater entities. Not that either were benign, but they just didn't care if you lived or died, as long as they achieved their goal. For Dollhouse, Echo was important, but unlike River, it was only her body (not her mind) that was necessary (as Boyd says in "The Hollow Men"). If the Blue Sun/Alliance thing was scary, I found Rossum to be absolutely terrifying. Joss and Co. built on the ideas introduced in Serenity (the Pax that created the Reavers) of "helping" people be better by assuming you know what that "better" is. While I know a lot of people found Dollhouse to be a bit cold, I think it was supposed to be. In a lot of ways, it represents the apotheosis/distillation of the narrative themes of Buffy, Angel, and Firefly...from the Shadow Men creating the First Slayer through demon rape to River/Echo being fashioned by a corporation as the ultimate weapon/cure. I'm not sure anything I'm saying here makes sense; I've just had these rambly thoughts and no one to share them with!

Interesting thoughts- I'm going to have to step back from my own usual way of seeing the big themes in the Whedonverse (which have more to do with the primacy of right over rule and human relationships over human institutions) to see how that fits in. Julia, should really go to bed, shouldn't I? Stupid me to start reading a "Big Bang" story at 10pm; as usual this one is stretched and padded beyond the limits of its story, and yet I'm reading it on the off-hand chance there's a plot in there somewhere

Sara- Are you snowed under? Thankfully, no. We didn't get nearly the amount of snow they predicted for our area Saturday night, and I don't think anyone (except maybe the ski resort owners) was heartbroken about that. We still have some on the ground around buildings and such, but that's it.
