I thought everyone would like to see our track record for this topic area. It appears we are expanding at an exponential pace. Perhaps the mathematically inclined can say to what power. I'm dumb as mud at math. I think our *moving* has more to do with the number of other Misc. Board topics introduced rather than our proclivity for proliferation of posts (ah, alliteration, and as Xander said in "Surprise" season 2, "Again, so many words! Couldn't you just say, 'we'd be in trouble?'".) Sorry, I couldn't resist the p,p, and p. I'm better now (recovering from a word attack). I'm taking medication but the disease is incurable, I'm afraid. Maybe I'd better double dose for awhile. ANYWAY, here is a breakdown of our activity: ATS/JM Part 1 ‑ 12‑7‑02 to 12‑22‑02 15 days 102 posts ATS/JM Part 2 ‑ 12‑21‑02 to 12‑21=02 13 days 78 posts ATS/JM Part 3 ‑ 1‑2‑03 to 1‑10‑03 8 days 154 posts ATS/JM Part 4 ‑ 1‑10‑03 to 1‑14‑03 5 days 102 posts ATS/JM Part 5 ‑ 1‑14‑03 to 1‑15‑03 1 day 73 posts so far Compare Part 2 with Part 4. Same amount of posts ‑ but 15 days versus five days. Compare Part 1 with Part 5 ‑ nearly same amount of posts in 13 days versus one day (and today isn't over). Does anyone want to step up for the Chair in Mathematics? Possible avenue of study includes counting how many different people posted in Part 1 versus Part 5. Otherwise, analysis over. (This is an historic post.)
I'm starting a (very) informal poll‑ not at all up to the academic standards of the VHISN. But I'm curious the Spikeaholics viewing history of the series. It seems to me that there are a number of mature, professional women frequenting this board. I would be surprised to learn that many of you followed BtVS from the very beginning, given the show's title, focus on young teens and the absence of any information that it merited the attention of an intellegent, discerning adult. So, these are my questions: Did you watch the series from the beginning? If not, at what point did you start watching? What led you to start watching; e.g., were you channel surfing and got drawn in, was it word of mouth, something you read? At what point in the series did you become hooked? If you joined the series after Spike was already a part of the show, have you gone back and watched Season One and all the other episodes in subsequent seasons that do not include Spike? More questions may be added as they occur. Your replies will be most appreciated.

deborah: interesting poll. I nominate you official polling officer for the Institute. I assume you will compile and share your results. Here are my answers: ‑‑‑‑‑ Q: Did you watch the series from the beginning? A: NO ‑‑‑‑‑ Q: If not, at what point did you start watching? A:Season 5 ‑‑‑‑ Q: What led you to start watching; e.g., were you channel surfing and got drawn in, was it word of mouth, something you read? A: Just channel surfing, noticing good‑looking, appealing males, funny lines ‑ the "The Body" floored me ‑ whew. Great episode, and I started to realize there was more to this show.
Q: At what point in the series did you become hooked?
A: MID SEASON 5 ‑ while it was on FX. Season 6 was the "live" season at the time, but I didn't even know that new episodes were still being made, or what channel they were on. I got interested enough to find out though, and started watching Season 6 partway through the summer re‑runs on UPN. ‑‑‑‑‑ Q: If you joined the series after Spike was already a part of the show, have you gone back and watched Season One and all the other episodes in subsequent seasons that do not include Spike?
A: Yes, I've now seen just about every episode. I like the show even without Spike, I LOVE the show with him. But what hooked me wasn't just Spike ‑ it was the high quality of the series. I had thought it was a teeny‑bopper show. But it was, instead, the best written, best acted, most artistically created show on TV. I got fascinated with the way it was put together, and wasn't surprised to find serious literary criticism and papers written on it, symposiums, etc.

My answers, Deborah ‑ Did you watch the series from the beginning? No If not, at what point did you start watching? Found it in season 6 at the episode "Entropy" (where Spike and Anya commiserate on the Magic box table) What led you to start watching; e.g., were you channel surfing and got drawn in, was it word of mouth, something you read? I saw James Marsters on the show "Andromeda" doing a guest shot. Was very taken with him but didn't know who he was. Months later saw an ad in TV Guide showing Spike and thought it was the same person. Immediately tuned in to BtVS and was hooked (Spike had a *very* interesting, extensive part in "Entropy" and just what I wanted to see. Wow!) At what point in the series did you become hooked? See question above. If you joined the series after Spike was already a part of the show, have you gone back and watched Season One and all the other episodes in subsequent seasons that do not include Spike? Yes, many times. Many, many times. And *with* Spike, many, many, many times. Bless you, FX network. Now have a complete set of tapes for all episodes. Alexandra

Did you watch the series from the beginning? NO If not, at what point did you start watching? Because a casually interested viewer near the end of Season 2. What led you to start watching; e.g., were you channel surfing and got drawn in, was it word of mouth, something you read? I really don't remember. I heard the show was cool, so I probably started watching by channel surfing, but already had an awareness that it was a show worth watching. I only caught sporadic episodes during Seasons 2 and 3, but would keep up with everything through recaps. At what point in the series did you become hooked? Pretty well hooked when Season 5 was running on the WB during the Season. Obsessively, insanely, drive‑my‑friends crazy hooked when FX started doing its re‑run thang. If you joined the series after Spike was already a part of the show, have you gone back and watched Season One and all the other episodes in subsequent seasons that do not include Spike? ABSOLUTELY. Those episodes are key to the Slayer mythology and development of all the other characters.

On TV right now is a commercial for the Ford Focus. This little black Focus is being driven by a guy who doesn't want any water sprinkled on his new car so he swerves around everything until a sprinkler is about to splash his car. He jumps out and throws himself across the hood (or bonnet, depending). The driver is the actor who played Adam, the Big Bad of season 4.
And I'm glad Adam staked Dr. Walsh. She was mean to Giles and tried to kill Buffy ‑ the jealous witch. Dr. Walsh is probably my least favorite character in the entire series. Talk about lack of humanity ‑ the Judge couldn't have fried her.

Q: "If you joined the series after Spike was already a part of the show, have you gone back and watched Season One and all the other episodes in subsequent seasons that do not include Spike?" Sorry, I didn't answer WHY I went back to pick up the episodes that Spike was not in. I watched the new episodes and kept running up against references made by characters that I didn't understand. That started to drive me crazy. And when I started to watch old episodes on FX I got confused about the order of the Buffyverse because I wasn't seeing the eps in order. I thought the Watchers Council was the Initiative for awhile. So I went to Buffyworld.com and copied all the episode summaries. Slowly, by watching eps and seeing their order in my summaries, I pieced together the series. And I was finally able to enjoy all the references made by characters to other incidents that happened "previously on Buffy".

Great idea Deborah! I too hope you share your results. My answers: Did you watch the series from the beginning? Yes If not, at what point did you start watching? What led you to start watching; e.g., were you channel surfing and got drawn in, was it word of mouth, something you read? I had heard and read that they were doing a TV series loosely based on the movie (which was way cheesy but fun) and was intrigued. At what point in the series did you become hooked? Probably from the first episode. But even more so after FX started the re‑runs. Bless you FX (though I drove my college roommates crazy!)!! If you joined the series after Spike was already a part of the show, have you gone back and watched Season One and all the other episodes in subsequent seasons that do not include Spike? I re‑watch them all the time and I try to get my roommate to watch them with me (she doesn't, she just goes to her room ‑ silly, silly girl). I've loved reading what everyone else's opinions are. I say again "Good job, Deborah!" ‑Lee Edited By Lee Hollins at 1/15/2003 5:32:00 PM.

This pic is for anyone (everyone?) who likes the way Spike walks. That side‑to side‑panther‑like stride. Ooooh, yummy. One of my favorite things to watch about Spike. (Actually he walked the same way on "Andromeda" so maybe this is a James Marsters' trait.) That walk is just so sexy male!!! www.buffysrealm.com/images/spike10.jpgIf you know of various scenes in any of the episodes, I'd like to gather a list of all the scenes where Spike does that sexy walk. If you are so disposed, write down the occurences and episode names (or descriptions if you don't know the names) as you are watching the reruns. When we get a representative number, I'll post the results all together. Meanwhile I hope you enjoy the pic. Alexandra K.

Although I don't quite fit in the mature professional category (yet), I am way too mature for my age (except when I'm immature (see all my previous postings ;‑P)) and will be a professional if I ever finish my dang thesis, and/or if I get the job they just checked my references for today. Therefore, I am submitting my replies anyway with the caveat that I'm not yet in my 30's. (in some circles that would be a plus, but in this circle I have come to realise that mature rocks!) Did you watch the series from the beginning? Nope If not, at what point did you start watching? I think the first full new episode I saw was Doublemeat Palace (or was it the ep. before that?) What led you to start watching; e.g., were you channel surfing and got drawn in, was it word of mouth, something you read? I actually saw a half hour special made to commemorate the 100th episode of Buffy (The Gift). In that episode, they told me enough about the show's premise to be able to understand what was going on. About a month later I saw my first episode. (I wish I could see that special again now that I now the people interviewed, I don't think I truly appreciated JM enough when he was speaking. I just remember a clip about the wardrobe person saying jokingly that her favourite person to dress was Spike and a cut to Marsters saying that he had been wearing the same clothes from the very beginning. Also, he said that at the end of one season they dry‑cleaned his leather duster and he had to roll around in the parking lot to get it sufficienly dusty and scruffy to wear on set. I think he mentioned driving over it with a van.) At what point in the series did you become hooked? Probably after the 2nd new episode I saw. (meanwhile I had probably seen 10 or 12 episodes in reruns.) And by that point I was watching 10 or 12 old episodes a week. If you joined the series after Spike was already a part of the show, have you gone back and watched Season One and all the other episodes in subsequent seasons that do not include Spike? I have yet to see all of season 1 and most of season two. (They are just being reaired.) But I remember being completely confused when I first started watching because Spike was a bad guy in the earlier season I was watching in reruns and a sex‑toy in Doublemeat Palace. I agree, the show wasn't quite the same without him. Edited By Watergal =^..^= at 1/15/2003 6:53:00 PM.

I agree, anyone who is mean to Giles is without redeeming qualities... No.... wait.... isn't Spike mean to Giles? No, phew, he is simply snarky and that is different. I almost painted myself into a corner on that one. LoL

Here's my own response to my poll. Did you watch the series from the beginning? No. I knew nothing about it other than the name and I dismissed it as another silly show directed at the teeny‑bopper demographic. If not, at what point did you start watching? Sometime late in season four, but only sporadically. What led you to start watching; e.g., were you channel surfing and got drawn in, was it word of mouth, something you read? Word of mouth. There are a number of college student workers in my office who would discuss it from time to time and one co‑worker who was very into it up through season five. Interestingly, he lost interest early in season 6 because he found it too focused on character development and not enough on fighting monsters, and he thought the whole concept of a Musical Buffy was too weird. Personally, I think the show grew too "adult" for him. At what point in the series did you become hooked? Can't put my finger on any particular episode but "Intervention" is a safe bet. When Spike had previously ordered the BuffyBot from Warren I had been kind of grossed out but was awaiting the results with interest. When he finally took delivery of the 'bot I was touched by how tenderly he treated it/her and by the strength of his character in resisting Glory's torture. And of course that episode has one of the best endings ever. But my case has definitely continued to advance since then because it wasn't until the current season that I have felt compelled to tape and save every episode, which means I have very few tapes to watch. If you joined the series after Spike was already a part of the show, have you gone back and watched Season One and all the other episodes in subsequent seasons that do not include Spike? Not yet, but I know I should. I must have a very acute form of Spikeaholism because at this point I still feel that every minute spent watching anything other than an episode with Spike is a minute wasted. But in my defense I have to say that being without cable and therefore having only limited access to reruns, few taped episodes, and only recently having acquired Season Two on DVD, I am still in the dying of thirst/guzzling water stage and crave all the Spike viewing I can get. At some point I do intend to catch up with Seasons One and Three on DVD and the Spike free episodes on Season Two which I haven't watched yet. Someday I hope to see Seasons Four and Five, of which I've only seen certain episodes.

Alexandra‑ I kind of found Dr. Walsh the character i loved to hate. she was horrid enough to qualify as a big Bad on hr own. I loved the snarky and unqualifiedly mean conversation she had with Giles wherein she informed him that Buffy lacked a sufficient father figure. Giles' obvious discomfiture and disagreement was comic and touching. I knew then that she had to die. Adam was just never arresting enough‑ the actor seemd immobilized and kind of bor(ed) (ing?). When I look back at the series now I appreciate it more than I did at the time when it seemed a trifle lame. Now I enjoy the interplay between Spike and the others and since I know Buffy and riley split up I do not have to anguish about how boring their relationship was. ( I actually like the actor when he is in other show, like the John Sayle's film Sunshine State)
