Also - where do you think Buffy will go? I suppose there are a lot of abandoned houses in Sunnydale now . . .I am curious to see what happens with Spike next week - not just what info/item he might bring back, but how he interacts with Buffy. I don't know if she will try to turn to him for support/advice, or freeze up on everyone, including Spike. Maybe Spike will end up acting as something of a mediator and get the two "factions" back together.RAE - Yes, I think there was a touch of exhaustion/exasperation in Buffy's final reaction, but the old Buffy wouldn't have been able to be so generous in her words or reaction.Well, I've gotta get to bed. They expect me to actually work tomorrow. I have a bunch of meetings scheduled - and we are having visitors, that I have to hostess, coming to check out our operation (my dept in particular). Nighty-night!!

Now that I know the context, can I take a gander again? T=Target E=Emotion or Intent P=Pain When T=Human and E=Intention to do harm, P=Intense physical pain. When T=Demon, or E=Passive intentions, P is negated. That is how the chip appears to function.

Maybe it was just my TV, but SMG's voice sounded raspy all night, even when it was TFE as Buffy (who shouldn't have been exhausted). It sounded as if she were sick while they filmed this episode.

Wait - I have to add one thing - who else thought riding on the motorcycle with his arms around Spike's waist was Andrew's dream come true?

From the teaser and "last four episodes" trailer, what Spike has found is a sword: one that's not for the reader of the marker (in Latin: Spike reads Latin! WE knew that!) but for "HER." Wowie! The Slayer will get to wield a mystically-charged and probably VERRRRY large sword (symbolism understood by everyone) against the forces of E-VILE. And how will Angel et al. get into the mix? And what ABOUT that trailer? It looks as though we're gonna have considerable character/relationship development next week, does it not? Nan

Hey all- been way out of comission- will have to spend much of tomorrow catching up on a bazillion posts- Just watched the latest epi- My heart was broken for Buffy for the first time in forever. Yes yes she had it coming but that does not make it any the less tragic.
the girl is frozen in place. It was so evident - remember the scene in the hospital room when she explained to Xander the situation with his meds and then when she go home was incapable of sharing any intimacy with her sister for goodness sakes? I just started remembering that this is a girl who has lost almost everything that ever meant anything to her. she regularly has to deal with the impact of putting all she loves in mortal peril- it is as though she sees them all through the scrim of loss and regret. She has put growing up to the side and it is time to pay the piper - even at the gtes of hell she has to take time to reconnect with those she cares about. (it can't be all about the mission) there was a time when she took an instant of eternity to kiss her lover tenderly b/4 dispatching him to hell. The new Buffy is learning that eternity consists in those moments snatched from the unknowable and the unendurable- it is all we have. And sometimes it is enough. ok- I am going now to see all I have missed for the past 8 days. please do post a response. ( I read that post)

I thought it was so cool the flashback to Bargaining, pt. 1 & 2, with Dawn on the back of Spike's bike wearing that same stolen L.A. Rams helmet. I know they've moved, but I'm sure it was a relic from when they were still in California.

Being a major spoiler whore, I'm going to politely restrain myself from any speculation or discussion about trailers and future episodes. I fear I know too much.

Good point... Buffy was definitely extremely defensive from the beginning of her speech which, not surprisingly, didn't go over well. Actually, I think Faith was the only person in the room who wasn't against her in any way from the outset. Faith was against Buffy's plan, not her leadership. The others, I'm not so sure. It's a very gray area. There are a lot of unspoken issues clouding the air which make it hard to ascertain what lead to their final reactions tonight.

I think you have it, David. T is the target. I still don't understand the formula because I don't understand some of the (mathematical?) symbols like the upright line (I know it as a "pipe": |), and I still have no idea how the "magical" chip distinguishes infallibly between human and non-human, but I think I've gotten closer for your and Spring's attempt to grapple with it. Thanks. Nan

Spring said, "Gilroy, where Giles sent Spike, is - I think - the Garlic capital of the world. I mean, they grow tons of garlic there. They are known for it. They have a Garlic Festival every year. " I live just down the highway from Gilroy where a lot of us in San Jose go to a large factory outlet mall. If I'd known Spike was going there I could have gone too and we could have "picnicked" together. Omigosh, I think the Scoopme Board has removed the word I used and replaced it with "picnicked". (slutty smile goes here) P.S. Gilroy has garlic ice cream too.

Trailers aren't spoilage if we've all seen them, are they? They were embedded in THIS episode. So do they count as spoilage? Nan

I found it interesting that when Spike and Andrew surprise the monk, Andrew falls back on antagonistic cliches of interrogation whereas Spike (once he's determined that the monk isn't a Bringer), simply, patiently, asks what happened without being threatening in any way. This is not Classic Spike: this is New Spike. In some ways, the soul has apparently had the effect of allowing Spike to be very simple and direct, with no posturing or bombast at all. He's able to recite the recipe for blooming onions to Andrew and simply ask what he needs to know of the monk. That's a fair range to be able to relate to.... Nan

I definitely think you are right, Faith was still willing to follow Buffy, but she made the mistake of thinking as a Slayer her vote counted for something. Perhaps Buffy had gotten used to everyone just following her because she was the slayer, they sorta had too, and was not ready to recognize Faith's status as a potential second-in-command, but Faith definitely didn't come across as if she were against Buffy. And Faith was the only one who held onto that status through the night, maybe because she understood the burden and didn't want it, and realized it would be hers to take if Buffy passed the mantle. The Scoobies (including Giles) I think were initially against the plan, like Faith, but more supportive of Buffy. But as Buffy kept going on, talking as if everyone is either behind her plan or they're the enemy, they all fell one by one, as well. The SiTs (including Dawn) were simply tired of being worked to death and being told what a horrible band of buggered they were. They rolled off the battle with the cops feeling a little more confident and thinking maybe even without powers they could still be a pretty decent opponent for the First Evil. If Buffy had shown a little more excitement over their victory and a little more appreciation of their need to get out and blow off steam, rather than berate them for fighting and Faith in front of them for taking them out, they probably would have gelled behind Buffy as a cohesive fighting unit. Instead, they gelled against her in mutiny.
