Sue, you did an excellent job with the review - very clear thinking about so much - I'm sorry your review and this ep got kinda pushed out by the holiday - but I think you are right in that in a lot of ways this was a filler ep.
As you noted, Wallace and his family were given great treatment - we know him a lot better now, but other than that, and the hopefullly possible new friend Mac, we didn't get much.
I don't know what to think about the revelation of Veronica's parentage...is it a red herring? Yes, we've been given so many 'hints' that it is true - does that mean it's false? If so, I would say that's bad plotting, and yet I don't want it to be true.
Looking forward to tonight's ep for sure.

Sue - I think you've got a winner there in your "universal theme" here. Things are not as they seem, surface versus the truth.
And how appropriate for a detective show! Especially a noir detective show. All about the cross and double-cross, the red herring, the fake out.
I also was wondering about why Koontz is so angry with Mr. Kane, ostensibly someone he should be grateful toward, since he was trying to prove that Koontz is not guilty. Which just keeps bringing us back to that same question. Why does Koontz want to die for a crime he didn't do?
I appreciated your mention that Meagan is the mirror for what happened to Veronica. The sudden fall from grace, going from beloved popular queen of the school to pariah in one fell swoop, and through no fault of her own - nothing that she actually did. It made her comments at the end of the show that much more meaninful - to not be so quick to attack, to see that there are some people who are her friends.

Sue, great job on the "themes review." I really like how you pointed out that Mrs. Fennel revised her opinion of Keith based on his actions. I find it hard to believe that Neptune High wouldn't have a really good computer teacher, after all Jake Kane is supposed to be a software billionaire. I don't believe Kuntz. I think he just wants to upset Veronica so she'll stop digging into Lilly's murder.

I have a few speculations, which are about all one can do with this show. 1. I still think Abel is not guilty of the murder...but that doesn't mean he isn't a killer. If Veronica somehow does wind up producing hard evidence to set him free, that could end badly. I think you might be right. Just because cops planted evidence, doesn't mean he didn't kill Lilly. Yup, I totally agree with the property damage. "Revenge is a dish best served cold." I think part of why Veronica trusts Wallace is that he's a new kid, not part of any crowd she has a history with. It would be nice to see the faithful, buddy get the girl, but only if she deserves him. I don't know if Veronica would treat Wallace or any nice guy the way they deserve. I could see her walking all over him, basically making him pretty miserable in the long-term. Edit--Now I see Spring pretty much the same thing about Wallace and Veronica.

Scaring somebody off by acting crazy - perhaps what Abel was doing to Veronica? Re-watching this episode made me come back to this idea. Is Abel crazy or not? The whole episode revolved around people who were not what their reputation said they were. I originally took that to be a clue that he was not telling the truth about Veronica's dad. (And I still think that.) But now I am also wondering about Abel himself. Is he also not at all what he seems to be, what his "reputation" says he is? Not crazy at all? Not a killer at all? I mean, he seemed really seriously icky to me, but is he? Or is he icky, but not in the way we all think? Lola

Then we get Abel, acting all crazy - implication may be that Abel, like Keith, was "acting" and was doing it to get Veronica "to leave" . . . i.e. leave Lilly's death alone . . . get her off track.

I think it's very possible that Abel did kill Lilly. Just because the cops planted the shoes, doesn't mean they had the wrong guy. So true. When it comes to Abel, we just don't really know enough (about his connection to the families, his possible motives) to draw many conclusions.

More like 1 point away from being cool.
Making a fresh start
There must be lots of respectable kids at your school. Have you ever been there?
Hee, what the internet can do.
Meg is the last good person at the school
Veronica casting Meg as Cinderella
The computer teacher is actually a gym teacher. Mac is the brains behind the outfit.

What an unfortunate song to sing.
Apparently I've done half the swim team while hopped up on goofballs.
dog or boyfriend
So this is a tenant.
so this is Dick.
I want Meg and Lizzie to do a rendition of Sisters.
Here's what you do: you get tough, you get even.
And now Wallace's mom realizes the truth about Neptune
Wallace's imaginary friend, Norman. Hee!!

They barely let me socialize with myself. I'm a bad influence. Hee!!!
OK, Abel is creepy. And is he wearing prostetics on his face? What the hell?
Man, Kristen Bell breaks my heart here.
Who's the "good kid" in the family. Meg or Lizzie? Duncan or Lilly?
