Whee! What a ride this show was! Scary, funny, disturbing. I too, will take a pass on watching the torture scene again. KB plays scared AMAZINGLY well. And the way Liam picked her up by her belt buckle and just slammed her on the pool table? Eek! One of the themes of this show seemed to be saving the person you care about: * Meg twice tells Duncan in his dreams that only he can save her. (How? Is he ignoring Veronica in order to study for his medical degree?) * Veronica is saved by Logan at the River Styx (Aside: When Veronica said, "If I need someone punched in the face, I'll whistle for you," was anybody else waiting for Veronica to then say in her best Lauren Bacall voice, "You know how to whistle, don't you, Steve? You just put your lips together and blow"?) * Logan tells Veronica, "Help me Mars-Wan-Konobe. Only you can save me." (Awwww.) Even though I don't always *get* the pop culture references, I certainly enjoy them. I didn't catch the Rocky Horror Picture Show reference, but I remember thinking that line was a little strange. In addition to Rocky Horror, there were shout-outs to James Bond, Star Wars, and Nip/Tuck, among others. Did anyone else notice that the 09-er trying to buy drugs from Weevil had a very "Logan" necklace on? I like fact that Mac called Veronica on her conversation style, and Veronica's attempt, however weak, to improve on it. Mac got across to Veronica in a very nice, non-confrontational way that friendships require both give and take. Hopefully she remembers this lesson when she next talks to Wallace. I miss Wallace, but I thought Veronica and Mac made a great team this week. I liked the way Mac and Veronica slugged each other on the arm on the way down the hall. (Aside deux: I'm probably in the minority, but I like Vice Principal Van Clemons. His facial expressions kill me.) For yet another week, we had absolutely no mention of Jackie. Has she dropped out of school? Did she go to Chicago to find Wallace? What?? Weevil confronted his gang by standing in the middle and the guys circled around him. I don't think that is normally how a leader would handle things: a leader of any organization would face toward the entire group so s/he could see the reactions and body language of the people being addressed. But, I think the script (or the director) dictated that Weevil be positioned that way on purpose. It calls to mind prey being surrounded by a pack of wild dogs, and it forced Weevil to turn and shift and constantly look over his shoulder for reactions from his gang, evoking a sense that Weevil is no longer in control, and is quite possibly getting set up to take a fall. I don't have many thoughts on the MOTW, other than to say it was pretty eh. We, the audience, never experienced anything from the Oliveras family point of view. For example, there could have been a scene where Marcos' mother got in the car and actually heard her son's voice through the radio. Instead, we only got Keith and Veronica talking about it after the fact. And, what was the significance of the neighbor sneaking in to get beer? That whole scene, from when Ned comes into the house, to when Keith finds the access code in the trash, seemed very...off...somehow. I don't know how to explain it really, but it just didn't fit in with the rest of the show, and threw the timing way off. I wasn't very invested in the MOTW this week and the scenes with Keith - usually the scenes I'm very invested in, felt very intrusive this time. Almost throwing the pace of the episode off for me. I couldn't seem to care very much about the dead boy or the parents so I didn't care very much about who was harassing them. Oh I love Clemmons too. This is one of the terrific things about this show - all the secondary characters are so, so wonderful. Clemmons, Cliff, Lamb, Mac - each and every one of them shine in their screen time. Yeah the hitting on the arm was fun. You know - I got the impression that Veronica was having a great time during that visit to Butters. She seemed perky and silly and loved the way she charged into the room when But- Vincent opened it a little. This is what is VM's idea of fun - not Hookers as my hero slumber parties but sleuthing with a friend. I did get the people needing to be saved theme and also saw the theme of people looking for the truth - everyone is seeking the truth in this episode The truth of what happened on the bridge, the truth of Marcos' character really is, and then there was that radio commentary scene. Logan Echolls - cock of the walk? Duncan Kane - a serial killer or puppy strangler? I thought those were very significant lines. Finding the truth of your character - which is one of the things Veronica needs to know about her character. Playing "normal" isn't really what is going to make her happy in the long run. And then -finding out the truth about Duncan. I actually enjoyed Duncan's appearances much more this episode. (Maybe it helped that he only had what - two lines, hee, hee) But the mystery surrounding the truth of what his relationship with Meg was really like and the truth of what Duncan is really feeling right now all made his appearances better for me. And great point Fotada about the gang leaders circling tiny little Weevil - very nicely framed by the director. I too find it ironic that Weevil and Logan are now escalating their conflict while both are trying to find the truth.

Whew - excellent thoughts everyone. Reetta - I think your theme about messges and communication is an excellent catch. To add to that - did you read Keith's email to Veronica? Another message.
And did anyone see that one of the messages was from K. Echolls in Veronica's email? Would that refer to Trina (maybe her full name is Katrina)? I have no idea- just found that interesting.
I do think Keith's line about conspiracies was very important because I think the seasonal mystery is a conspiracy. Obviously starting with the Boatloads of fun parents and the continual lack of parents, the seriously messed up parents in Nobody puts Baby in a corner, the possible pregnancy - again Parents are like this big, flashing neon light in Neptune.
I think there is not a shadow of doubt that Meg is pregnant. Congratulations Spring on calling it way back and to many other LJ friends who first started speccing this.
Selfquest is what Veronica is on this year. She thought solving Lilly's murder would give her everything she wanted. Think back to the three things she mentioned about being Normal in "Normal is the Watchword".
She wanted a normal boyfriend. Well hey- she got rid of the one that was too abnormal for her and picked Duncan. And now we know - Duncan isn't "normal" either is he? Duncan is seriously messed up in his mind. And obviously, there was far more to his relationship with Meg than we, the viewers have been giving to see.
A normal job - is she still working at Java the Hutt? She tried the "normal" job of babysitting and look where that got her. For all intents and purposes she is back to her abnormal job of being a PI.
And the last normal thing - Aaron Echolls in jail and the killing of Lilly Kane solved. Well the case may be solved - I still don't think they will try to change that and it was only Aaron trying to fly a defense - but will Aaron stay in jail? I think we'll get some more Aaron this year and I have no doubt this will evolve over time too.
So Veronica - who was told she is perfect as she is by the duplicitous, no-doubt drug-dealing plastic surgeon (and hee, hee on Nip, smuck or whatever that line was), needs to see that normal is who you are - not what your parents want you to be - like Marcos, or what she has somehow idealized in her mind as what it should be but that all the shades of who Veronica is now is normal.
I loved the Star Wars reference again and loved all the Bond and Q lines. Though I want Veronica to help Logan - honestly, I think I'd be hiring every high-priced investigator I could find at this point.
Someone - I think it was Rae, said that Logan really is Backup right now. First he calls himself that and then he actually performs as backup - rescuing her from the River Styx.
And she told him if she wanted him she would whistle.
(so many ways to read that line)
Anyway - I agree the music was great tonight and did you notice the music playing over Logan's entrance into the bar tonight Monnie? Great song, great scene.

Logan has trust issues. Cliff only earns his trust by talking bloody straight to him, and doing a solid for him, by getting him bail after he told him he was very much sure he wouldn't be able to. I think he's going with Veronica because he trusts her implicitly. She may break up with him over his morally questionable class warfare (and he knows he's wandering into nasty territory with that), but he still knows that if he asks for help, on a matter related to pure justice, she will come through for him: and he knows that (as he is NOT guilty, so far as he knows) she will be discreet. He trusts her, still: to keep him free in something he knows he didn't do. He's able to recognize her as someone with more integrity than he has: even though V is sliding down a bit of a slope, working with Clarence, she still does not destroy Jackie: and he's seen it, and he trusts in that. He expresses it in snarky ways, yes: but that's his defensive mechanism. I honestly think that she is the only person he fully trusts(I don't even think he trusts Duncan as much as he does V) and that's why he doesn't hire a high-priced investigator.

This is my Give Jason Dohring an Emmy post. The acting throughout the entire episode but especially during the torture scene was so amazingly, flatout knock your socks off fantastic that I first offer a moment of silent awe and then commence with the furious clapping. The torture scene was scary because I felt Logan's terror. The pleading, the yelling, the relief sounds bursting out, his eyes, his fear - all so palpable. So very nicely done. Then afterwords, the rash phone call and bravado to Weevil (weevs- hee, like the line) and the almost sob and scared look around - oh my God was Jason on in this episode. Wonderful, wonderful, job on every level in every scene. He did do a truly wonderful job this entire episode. #clap# As did KB--I still can't get that scene where she was attacked out of my brain--freaked me out completely. I don't like seeing either one of them scared. But they did some outstanding acting.

Hey everyone! I've been abit MIA all week, but I hope you all had a great Thanksgiving!
I've been wanting to post my reactions of 2x08 much earlier, but between the holiday and meeting with family and friends, here it is Saturday night and I'm just now jumping into discussion. Oh well...
So I admit, I finished this ep and I was so damn confused my head was spinning in full–on Exorcist form. The Logan kidnapping, Weevil/Logan phone call, the Meg dreams and then the letter. I seriously thought RT created this ep just to fuck with our minds.
LOGAN's KIDNAPPING SEQUENCE Not able to form any reaction except, ‘huh?’ I went to read other posts to see if others made more sense out of it. And DAMN. I’m a friggin’ idiot! I must have watched that whole sequence from the Logan kidnapping to the cell phone call like four times to try to make sense out of it. And not once did I see the phone snatching! How the hell did I miss that? My mind jumped straight to ‘Weevil’s in cahoots with Logan’? ‘Logan knew that was gonna happen? But that makes no sense. Logan’s clearly mad. Full out mental.’ So clearly, by missing that move, I got completely lost. Going back and rewatching, it makes SO much sense now.
Can't get over how amazingly well JD sold the whole scene. I was just about dying watching it. When the obligatory pyschotic jackass gets that damn scared, darn tootin' I get scared too. There was a second there where I actually was fearful of how far RT would go. Would he really let Logan get his hand blown off? I was quite scared to go on, because I'm a freak like that.
LOGAN'S GOT A GUN?!?! But am I seriously the only nuthatch that had a crazed reaction to Logan's gun? I'm obviously way too attached to these characters, because I literally had the same reaction to Logan pulling a gun on those folks as Veronica did. Yes, when I saw that gun, I paused the frame, and my jaw dropped straight to the floor. Yes, I'm the girl who was reduced to a blubbering idiot at the sight of Logan pulling that gun. "A GUN? A GUN, LOGAN?" My exact reaction. So it kind of freaked me out when two minutes later KB delivered those exact words. I'm still alittle creeped out by it. *shields head* AHH! MY BRAIN'S BEEN VIOLATED!!
VERONICA AT THE RIVER STYX - OH.MY.GOD. So of course, I think that whole sequence, from pulling up to Boyd's house to Veronica leaving the Xterra, was just spot-on perfect. Finally she gets herself into too deep a situation. Keith was right, she can't handle everything. KB gave a fantastically frightening portrayal inside that bar, showing Veronica in such a state we have not seen since 122. But to Logan? Safe to say, I thought her reaction was just oh so Veronica. Exactly how she would react to that sort of thing. Yes, she herself just went through a hugely traumatic experience, and he saved her, but how does she choose to process it all? Into a railing against him. The shock of how far he's gone since last year. What his life has done to him in the last six months. "So take a look at me now" the song says. (which by the way, that song could not have been used in a better place. Great job, RT!) This is where he is now, how far gone the guy she knew last year is. The thought that it seemingly scared her more shitless than her own encounter, is quite an interesting one. Although I think that whole scene is completely open for flexible interpretation.
WEEVIL'S CONTROL OVER HIS BOYS Ah, Weevil. Great, great scenes. So nice to see Capra being fully used in this ep. So they're bringing the "Is Weevil still in charge?" question to the forfront. And we find out more about the bridge. With a flashback! Thank the Lordie we're still getting them! And a biased flashback too! Which means we have no clue what to believe and what not to believe. So intriguing. According to whatshisface, the only two left on the bridge were Hector and Bootsy. So technically, those are the only two who could have killed Felix. Unless whatshisface isn't telling the truth about Felix running the show and barking orders to people. Anything from that story could be as true is it could be false. (Although I'm guessing the pathetic Logan-stabbing-Felix is most definitely false.) Still, it only makes things more exciting while continuing to make my head hurt.
THE MYSTERY OF DUNCAN KANE Duncan! Little tiny scenes, but oh so interesting. Finally we get to see inside his brain! Inside Duncan's brain! What the hell is ticking underneath there? Never thought we'd actually find out like this. Full-on Duncan dreams. I could spec about this for hours, what his perception of Veronica has become over the last couple of months, versus the image he's kept of Meg, but just watch it be proven completely wrong next week. I am now thinking that breaking up with Meg was not Duncan's choice. I'm thinking it was her parents who intervened. But I'm hoping that it's not going to go develop into the 'Meg was pregnant' theory. It's just way too soap opera-y for my taste.
Other little bits: Mac was back! And she was back for more than two seconds! Yup, that made me a happy, happy girl. Add in a nice portion of Clemmons, and then Butters (hehe) and I thought the CotW was quite entertaining.
I also love how they are making the CotW much more important than last year. Each ep this year, it fits into the season arc mystery somehow. One by one, we're learning about the other kids on the bus, which only raises the stakes for the bus crash mystery. The lines aren't nearly as drawn as last year. Everything is slowly bleeding together, and have I mentioned how much I friggin' love it? DAMN!
ETA: I forgot about the whole Danny Boyd thing. We never found out why he sued Dr. Griffiths. He seemed to have no qualms about it. So what is he hiding?
ETA2: Oh, and I forgot to mention. SYMMETRY!!! moment of the week. Both in highly torturous, threatening ways! Ah, RT, have I mentioned how much I love you for your consistance with this symmetric, mirror images theme? SO DAMN MUCH!
ETA3: And also, two more VM OST tracks were used! Yea! Still have, four left? Right? Sway, I Hear The Bells, Lost and Found, and I Know, I Know. RT better use Sway in the right place or he'll be hearing from me...

Heeeeeeee! Rocky Horror reference "Mind if we use your phone? W're both in a bit of a hurry." I love it! The Veep's son! ;D "Oh, like girls!" ;D I love her. Oh crap. It was a camp that was gonna "change" Marcos from being gay?! OK, leaving the slip of paper with the lawyers name on it? Too sloppy. Someone is trying to make it look like the school district is doing it. Maybe even Mr. Oliveros? Logan!!! Don't go over to the van! Well, the Fitz boys are getting their revenge. Hee, hee - the Mac and V show was excellent! Loved the Rocky Horror Picture show dialogue, Clemmons glee that Butters had girls visiting him - hee, hee, "private basement time", "your blankey is blinking" - just hee, hee, hee. Did anyone else notice that Veronica - who last year seemed really isolated in her sleuthing, even though she had help, seems more of a tag team this year.Beaver, Wallace, Clarence, Mac, Duncan and Logan have all teamed up with her at various times this year. I don't know that it means anything - I just find it kind of funny. The van and Logan are getting a separate post from me. ;D Yes, I agree. Another nice little thing is the ongoing Bond theme in those tag team moments. Last week: “We are not breaking into a bank vault in a James Bond movie”, this week: “Excellent work, Q,” and “Right back at you, Mr. Bond”. I noticed that, too. I thought the name of the sender was KT Echolls. I was also under the impression that the subject line said something like “Doctor” and I guess I just thought that that’s some sort of clever or not so clever nickname for Logan. ETA: Going back and rewatching, the subject line said no such thing. It was the subject of the preceding email. Oh well, there goes that theory but I guess it could mean something that we are shown the entire contents of her inbox. It’s a nice little detail anyway.

Even more intelligent people than me had the same kind of reaction to the scene . Adding my praise to the brilliant KB and JD in those scenes (if that wasn’t clear already). Amazing, frightening, jaw-dropping-to-the-floor-how-the-hell-are-they-going-to-get-out-of-this-situation kind of feeling. I felt every little thing. Every time, in every single episode I go through those emotions with them, more so with this show than with any other show at the moment. And may I just say how much I love the way you described the sequence . Oh yes and the song, ah that makes perfect sense.

Sometimes I can't tell if they are playing "flashbacks" or not. Because, unless my eyes deceive me, it showed Logan stabbing his tormentor. I'm pretty sure they're sticking with the same theme of flashbacks as last year. All subjective to who is telling them. Skewed, and biased truths. I'd imagine some of that flashback was truth and some was false, but figuring out which? Well obviously RT wants to drive us all insane.

Oh, freakin GREAT. a gimmick ending coming up next week. Dammit. What is THIS all about? I don't watch the promos and I don't want to know what was in them specifically, but a gimmick ending? I heard people say something about the fans picking the ending they want. And to that I say, WHA?!?! Please tell me this is not true.

Letter is from a Kris Talley in Seattle, Washington.... Was it really Kris, with a 'K'? Doesn't that usually signify a girl? It did look like typical girl's handwriting...

Only you can save me." (Awwww.) Ooo, nice. It was quite a 'save me' ep. Although how Duncan can save Meg, still confuses me immensely... Great, great observation! I think you'd be completely right... That beer scene? Was OH SO LONG. Really didn't need to be so damn drawn out. But the only big snag I saw in this ep so I'll forgive them...

The day this girl learns to compose a coherent paragraph of text, there’ll probably be a parade and seven bloody trombones. Until then, ramble is my middle name and here we go. Are you kidding me? You related most of the ep back to messages. Great job!
