The day this girl learns to compose a coherent paragraph of text, there’ll probably be a parade and seven bloody trombones. Until then, ramble is my middle name and here we go.
I don’t usually watch the previews because previews and promos are as evil as actual spoilers but for some reason I did watch it last week and I’ve been - to borrow a phrase from someone’s LJ – running around like a chicken without its head ever since. Since there were so so many hints to last season and its emotional conflicts already in last week’s episode: the Out of Order-sign and the bathroom scene following it, to name a few, I was getting way (too) excited.
It’s, erm, Meg and she looks sort of strange. Veronica’s wearing black and Meg’s wearing white;
nice choice of clothing, yet so..exactly what Duncan would be thinking. Veronica’s being quite bitchy here, which I think is a little weird considering that pretty much the only time she’s shown any real emotion towards Duncan this season was in 2X02 when she was upset that Duncan was not more upset about Meg’s situation. Her outburst was immediately followed by an apology in 2X02. She practically apologized for showing any emotion. You just don’t do that, do you, if you are in an honest relationship?
It’s a letter. It’s the letter. They are telling us about it now already?
Danny Boyd? Isn’t that the name of the director of Trainspotting (and The Beach of lesser fame)? Well, there’s the drug dealing connection for ya. And hey, a pop culture reference I noticed all on my own (although of course I have no idea what this means).
And there’s your combined “oh it’s Weevil who’s dealing drugs with the clueless pimple faced client” scene (I worry about you, today’s youth) and the “Weevil has no idea what his toadies are doing behind his back” reference. He’s definitely going to teach the kid a message though.
Messages, huh? Letter’s a message, too. Getting punched in the face can be considered sending a “message”, I guess.
If I need anyone punched in the face, I’ll whistle for ya. Aww, isn’t that romantic? You know, because there was total kissing and punching last season. Just think about how much punching followed by kissing we got last season. She doesn’t sound pissed off at all though, it’s more like a fond memory kind of thing. Subtle messages, people. Subtle messages ;-).
Did she whistle for Logan? It sure looked like she could have.
Isn’t that dog sort of like Backup?
The River Stix certainly has a lot of messages on its walls.
Why would someone keep a blood stained pool table? Well, it is a message.
Putting someone in jail is trying to get a message through to someone. Hmm, I wonder if there will be detention in this episode. How about a detention like the one in The Girl Next Door last year?
That’s some gangster movie “sending a message” kind of behavior there. What kind of signs is the Liam guy talking about?
Logan’s sending a message via the cell phone or the ankle monitor. Messages and notes. There have definitely been a lot of messages, notes and signs in this episode. Also, Veronica was holding onto a notebook in the car. Right. Were there any cards in this episode?
A GUN!!!
I’m, I’m, I’m…. Try to remember to breathe. Okay, okay. Concentrate.
Off the knives and on to guns. Dick’s father gave it to him? That’s interesting. What, they go shooting once and he gives him a gun? Dick Sr. is worried about Logan’s protection? Well, there was the protection and toadies thing, mentioned in the premier? Also, I need to go back and watch that scene is CCBB. Maybe someone can connect the dots for me.
What, she doesn’t tell her dad that there almost was some serious bodily damage done to her? How is that going to help? Not giving away any messages to him?
How much emotion can you pack in the first ten minutes? We have hardly got as far as the opening credits.
Keith actually is accusing Veronica a little bit about being paranoid? Of creating conspiracies? Of course, last season her tendency to create conspiracies that no one else seemed to believe in led to the solution. She found closure, as much as I and Rebecca James hate to use that word.
Marcos Oliveres? No connection to other people, no passing messages to others? Is there a parallel to Meg? What if Meg will also be “simply forgotten”? Veronica cannot let that happen. She couldn’t let Lilly be forgotten nor can she let Meg be forgotten. Is this scene simply about her determination to find the truth or about something else, too? That’s a pretty grim picture, isn’t it? That we wouldn’t have influenced others at all, that we haven’t made any impression on them at all? Isn’t life about sharing those precious moments with other people, isn’t that what makes life worthwhile? That we get to “send messages” to others? Messages include meanings. Look at me, I’m trying to be all deep here. That probably just sounds sappy. There was, though, the mention of the “last perfect moment they had together” on the beach at the beginning of this episode.
Keith is also trying to get a message through, calling for the third time the same week. Databanks. Lots of messages there. What is he saying “It’s right in front of your face”? What, the messages? The solution? You don’t talk to each other, you don’t pass along messages? Say what? How can you not get the message even when I am yelling at you? Well, sometimes you just don’t see the obvious, as Veronica begins to realize by the end of the episode.
Where did Keith actually call? I presume it wasn’t the tax people.
Simon and Stern? Now, where have I heard that name before? I’m pretty sure someone else was using the lawyers of Simon and Stern also. The school is also trying to send a message by using the big guns.
And now Logan’s at the school all happy happy joy joy? Damn, when do we get to see these people actually talk about their issues? Someone should get together for some hot cocoa and cinnamon toast and talk about their feelings is all I’m saying.
Duncan harbouring a dark secret? What’s gotten into Duncan? How can you not see it, Veronica? How can you not get the message?
Weevil and the maniacal stare? Hee. Sending message just by looking at someone. Yay, there’s so much Weevil goodness in this episode. The following scene has to be one of my favourites of the episode. Am I still a George here? Am I still the president? Does what I say hold any power nowadays? (Or, on second viewing, he actually says “Am I still in charge here but wouldn’t it be funny if he’d said “George”). Am I still getting my message through? Did the rules change? Weevil’s kind of out of it these days. He’s standing in the middle but the PCHers seem to be overpowering him? I’m feeling that he’s not feeling too strong here. They are all so quiet. I’m definitely getting the doomsday feeling here, it’s now or never. Weevil doesn’t get his message through to them, they are not telling him anything.
We flashback on the bridge scene. Could this episode get any better?
No, that didn’t just happen. Logan didn’t stab him.
And now for the comic relief of the episode. Quiet basement time? Hee. *Goes to the 12-year-old corner*.
Why are we actually told about Camp Self Quest? Was it just for the storytelling purposes of this episode or does it have some larger significance?
So, Weevil and Logan orchestrated the entire thing. JD is a good actor (TD pulling that off? While I really do like him, not bloody likely) and Logan’s definitely got the actor genes. Luckily, Weevil still seems to have some control over the PCHers.
ETA: On second viewing, I noticed that Logan crabbed the cell phone from the PCHer’s pocket. The first time I saw the scene I thought that Weevil and Logan had somehow orchestrated the whole people’s court episode together to find out if the PCHers were double-crossing Weevil but that would have been pretty far-fetched, wouldn’t it? Also, the “You have no idea of the hell you just brought on yourself” line does not fit that scenario at all.
OK, Duncan. Now I definitely think Meg was pregnant. The episode begins and ends with Duncan’s subconscious trying to get a message through, messages in dreams. For some reason, I’m thinking about S1 and Lilly here. Though I of course have no idea what that could have to do with anything here, other than the fact that that was one of the first time that Duncan’s subconscious was mentioned and the lines “What, you forgot about me already?” which could mean something with both Lily and Meg and eh, that Duncan’s all about the subconscious. We are definitely getting lots of references to Duncan’s subconscious in this episode. His desires or whatever you may want to call them were also mentioned in the radio broadcast. The doughnut definitely needs to clue in here, break out of his stupor and admit certain things to himself.
Just a few things more:
What I don’t get is how Veronica can be so at ease and laid-back and normal and all about business in school the next day after the assault. I’d be pretty freaked out if someone was holding a knife to my throat. Didn’t it affect her at all? As I already mentioned, Logan also looks suspiciously happy at the lunch table. Strange.
Who is actually good at getting their message through here? I can’t say, really.
Talking about messages, there was the one Aaron had written on the picture for Curly Moran. “All these years still on The Long Haul”. Is that somehow tied into any of this?
Recap: I loved loved loved the episode. Flashback scenes, a little bit actual Veronica/Logan interaction, Logan and the woobie look, lots of Weevil and the PCHers, frightening moments, happy moments, snarky moments, the whole enchilada. I love my show.
Wow, that was long. These things of mine could use some editing sometimes. OK, now I’m off to read the other comments. Naturally, I have no idea what half of the things I’ve just typed here mean but you will connect the dots for me, you always do. I’m just being all bitchy and posting mine without reading anyone else’s first ;-).
