Huh! Several of you commented that this episode was a bit of a bore. Interesting. 'Cause after it was over, I turned to my viewing buddy and said "Okay, now THAT was a Veronica Mars! Classic! Good MotW and a furthered long arc and lots of catch-up on the regulars. The only thing missing was Wallace." My friend agreed. Needless to say, you can tell I liked it. For me, snarky, snappy Veronica was back. Also, she was working her tush off on several things at once and even managing to integrate solutions. Find Weevil a job---> use him to help pacify the dean. Help your radio show buddies and help the dean--->get the "warrior feminists" to sit down with the rude paper guys on an open mike. And potentially (tho' it failed through no fault of hers) get the two parties to come to some resolution. There was even more integration going on, but you get the idea. To me this is pure VM. All the way down to her initial plan to not find the book, but jsut to return to a fake copy. The girl is always thinking outside the box and three steps ahead. Smart chics are hot. Vlad

My thoughts before I read anyone:
For the first time I got excited about VM. The interwoven storylines, the characters reading true, the music, some great snarky lines - I liked this one.
First of all kudos to Kristen. For the first time I felt like I was watching Veronica and not Kristen playing "Veronica". She ran the gamut of emotions from flustered, jealous, playing the puppy dog eyes, sad, soft, snarky, vulnerable, etc. In fact, I felt all the actors brought their A game last night. A little bit of Dick, Piz - all hyper and adorkable, Keith, and Weevil.
Weevil's weight - though I knew he was heavier from the summer pics, threw me a little at his first appearance but he nailed all his emotions. He was so adorable working for Keith and his disappointment was palpable. (Though Weevil in a shirt and tie - my eyes went a little ack, ack, apocalypse coming at first glance). Nice play by KB when she had to tell him he was fired. Good scene.
Logan is still playing his scenes with those layers of sadness even in the snarky comments and while I can fanwank that he is dealing with emotions from his father's death, guilt over Beaver, etc. I think the viewers need to get some exposition or scenework that explains it. I liked his scenes but I ache for him. As a fan I wonder if Veronica gets Logan's pain and I would love to see a raw, emotional scene where she confronts him about this. Granted it's VM so that won't be happening (Miss I keep everything bottled up) but I liked that she tried to explain herself in the end there. Nice vulnerbility, nice bit of actually seeing Veronica - the girlfriend. I bought this much more than all the look I'm perky with Duncan scenes last year.
What didn't work - the one-note portrayal by the femms and lampooners. Seriously bad and I had to struggle not to fast forward all their moments. I guess you're stuck with whatever struggling actor gets cast but as a director I would have been pushing for just a smidge of layering. Something to make you care when the big moment arrives. Ahh well - there was nice work from the GF and the football players. I liked their scenes.
I adored the fact that Veronica couldn't think of an alibi right away in the coaches office. Hee, hee, hee.
MOTW - honestly I never care much about these so I was all whatever. What I did like about it was the quiet moment in the hall when Veronica realized what she was doing. The actress really sold that scene so good job.
Ed Begley, jr - Van Clemmons lite. The jury's still out for me. I thought he was a bit cardboard but then I'm such a Van Clemmons fan that I'm predisposed to dislike him.
I'm excited that I feel excited about VM again.
Granted - this is all kind of superficial and I'm not delving much into the rape aspect. The rape last night almost assumed a lurking serial killer aspect to me. It felt like it was always there, just out of eyeshot, a shadow flickering in the corners until, out of nowhere, it struck. The noir is still a little lite but it's coming. I feel it.
Veronica continues on her always accusing the wrong person first ways. I kind of love that about her.
Anyway, the work demons are still here, there and everywhere but I'm off to read what everyone else thought.
ETA: I see Vlad and I are on the same page. People thought it was a bore? Huh.

Just wanted to add that I, for three, was not bored by this episode at all. I could feel Logan's pain and depression and Veronica's confusion. I loved how she worked the Dean and got Weevil work at the college. Weevil is trying so hard, but he has rough edges that were made rougher by being arrested and locked up. As to the serial rapes, well, I know most colleges would be on this type of situation like the proverbial duck on a june bug, but this is Neptune, after all. It's a lot like Sunnydale in the mass blindness that seems to go on.

And RT seems pretty snarky about authority figures as a general rule, so it doesn't surprise me that nobody's getting too worked up yet.

I can't wait to see if Weevil's 'in' at the college is going to be key to helping Veronica solve some of this year's mysteries. He is going to be the proverbial fly on the wall - ala the janitor in The Breakfast Club - only cooler, I hope.

Vlad I'm another one who really enjoyed this episode. In addition to the multiple layers of V activity, as Vlad said, what I really liked was the believable development of the Veronica-Logan relationship. I know it's difficult for writers to keep the tension in a 'ship, which is why so many writers tease things for years without any resolution. So I'm pleased thy're balancing Logan's role in Veronica's life so well, along with the mysteries. I half expected they'd break up once again during the summer, or in the first episode, and I fully expect they won't last through the season. But if the quality of the writing continues AND they stay together, I'll be impressed. It's easier to pile on the angst. #roxy#

Vlad Oh, I liked the ep a lot. Liked the snarking and how everyone was very "in character". Very happy to see Weevil and his storyline was sweet and sad. The COTW wasn't one of the most action packed we've ever seen, but I don't think it has to be every week. And you're right, Veronica was a busy little bee, wasn't she?

The episode was ok. Strangely enough, I continue to find Logan far more interesting when he ISN'T interacting with Veronica.
Lots of funny lines, however. Acceptable amounts of snark.
Am I seeing things, or has Governor Ah-nold apparently greatly improved the food in California's prisons?
That aside, I like Weevil in limited doses, so it was nice to see him back. I wish they hadn't abandoned the Weevil-as-detective idea so quickly. They could have at least given him a few weeks of storyline over that.
Strongly disliked the lack of Wallace and Mac in the mix. If their roles are going to be severely cut, a la Dick or Weevil, that's going to piss me off. It was bad enough cutting Percy down to 16 episodes last year with an abandoned plot line.

Definitely the guy has gained some weight, but I think it is more dramatic because he has such a short neck and that bald head . . . it just emphasizes the weight gain in an unflattering way. I was all too, when Weevil did not get to stay with Keith. That was kinda fun. But it really would have been hard to believe that Weevil would, at this point in his life, have the finesse needed for the job. His presence at Hearst will be good, I think. Gives Veronica the "in" she needs for getting keys, and such - kind of the "Wallace works in the office" role from last year.

Let's get him back to denim and leather! And Wac? I don't know. I was already pairing up Mac in my mind with Piz since he has no screen chemistry so far with Veronica and I want him far away from disturbing my LoVe. L and V can do a good enough job of being a rocky relationship without Hearst's own Riley. leftylady

I think he'll wind up working with V or at least telling her something important that he saw, with his conclusions. No, he doesn't have the finesse or self-control yet, but that doesn't mean he's not a good addition to the detecting part of the goings on. And showing us that would be the reason they had him working for Keith before installing him out at the school where he could help V. I loves me some Weevil. It broke my heart last spring that his grandmother didn't get to see him graduate ...

Nice work, Fotada!Good catch on the questioning/helping theme that seemed to permeate the ep. When is doubt and questioning a good thing, and when does it cross the line into weakness? When is it help, and when is it inappropriate, controlling, intrusiveness? On Veronica’s thing for reforming unreformable bad boys, I think this refers to Weevil and Logan. I liked the reference to Veronica’s “trust issues,” too. Veronica’s got nothing on Logan, when it comes to growing up around people who betrayed one another, so I’d say they are going to be dealing with some rocky times as they try to deal with their demons, and grow. “I don’t understand boys. Or football.” And yet, she was dating a football player. Who is a boy. So, we can see why problems might have arisen. Hee. I got a giggle out of this, but it is insightful too. As you said, Veronica needs to figure out who Logan is, and if he is the guy for her. Thanks for sharing your thoughts on the episode, Fotada.

Thanks! That's a good point! Weevil is definitely in the category of bad boy. In fact I wonder if, should Weevil punch someone at his current job, will she try to get him yet another job? Where's the line when you say "no more"? Oy. Very true. ;D
