i agree on all counts. the guy that plays mercer is pretty good at giving off the "creepy" vibe. i wonder what's so top-secret that logan can't (or believes he can't) spill it to veronica. For some reason, I like Mercer. He kinda reminds me of Spike, in that he is unapologetic for being who he is. I don't think he's evil. He does like his games, tho. Parker did seem to be genuinely put off by him and his cologne. I like the idea that it may be someone close to him, that would explain the vibe she got. She's remembering seeing him or him being around. But then it could turn out that he was there maybe earlier in the evening or something and she's mixing it all in her memories because of the drug she was given. And that would really parallel Veronica's experience from two years ago.

I spent several precious minutes trying to figure out why the dean's wife or the professor would have tried to set up Veronica. I was in the middle of a vast conspiracy in which the prof was so convinced she was going to find out about the affair (simply because she's such a fab detective, which is insane troll motivation, really) that he was getting ready to pre-emptively control her two ways. Either by getting her tossed or by bribing her with special "I'll be your advisor" favors. And then I saw Veronica talking to the T.A. and it all made sense again. Me and my overactive imagination. Hee! And here all I imagined was that the Professor was selling the good papers from his class to the cheaters online and the TA innocently ran her paper thru the filter. I'm glad the writers are tricksier than I am. ;D And I'm glad they are less insane than me. ;D

That part actually really spoke to me because I've been there (in high school, not college). Teacher or the Administration using (a) student(s) as a status symbol, an example of their own success. And it sucks being reduced like that, but you want to try to use it to your advantage and see what you can get out of 'em (and there's my mother's influence creeping in). Sometimes it can be like diplomatic immunity. I don't know how much hate there was. I tried my best to be likeable, at least on the outside. And I'm sure you were. I really didn't like the way the prof puffed her up like that and then took her to lunch and schmoozed her. It was a bit . . . not good, somehow, to me. And you could tell Veronica really didn't like the attention in class that way. I think the prof may have had designs on Veronica, and the TA, knowing that the prof had hit on his female students before, stepped in to wise-up Veronica (not that his motives were entirely unselfish).

Parker did seem to be genuinely put off by him and his cologne. i don't think he did it, either. but i do continue to think that the actor played the creepy vibe very well. (making it more believable that he did) the cologne seems an important clue. veronica seems to have once again lept to conclusions. maybe it was someone else at the casino that did it? i doubt mercer is the only person that worked there that had access to the lockbox.

So it's disgruntled workers syndrome Piz wants to do a Rygel?Piss explosives? Torture Dhurka? Depose his deposing cousin? Huh? Maybe it was the crooked security staff.... They were sort of invisible, after a fashion, and Mercer's possesions were in their hands... I thought the guy that hit him seemed a little altered, actually. *sigh* yep, but it's sorta understandable. Not noble, so much, but very human. These things happen, and hopefully, one learns from them.

Piss explosives? Torture Dhurka? Depose his deposing cousin? Huh? The whole "if you're dead, I'm taking your possessions" bit, complete with all the poking to make sure that he's really dead seemed very much like a Rygel moment to me.

Jumping in to post my reactions in case work sweeps me away:
VM: I really enjoyed this episode. I don't think I loved it as much as the last two but I still felt involved and happy and in the "grooving with show" mode. Veronica felt so much like the Season 1 Veronica we met, I feel all traces of Duncanizing have been detoxified from her body.
Highlights:
1. Dean O'Dell - Put me on the loving the Dean train. I was a reluctant boarder at first, clinging to my Van Clemmons cutout as the train left the station but I loved the Dean last night. From his cut the bullshit interviews in the opening through his sneaking cigars and watching boxing in his office and being clueless to V's purpose - it all worked for me. Scoot over guys, I'm on the train.
2. Parker - nice acting job by Julie last night. Excellent variety of emotions played well. She was so cute at the bowling alley and then the creep out at Mercer was nicely played.
3. Piz - you know, if I didn't have the he's replacing Logan factor going on in my head, I would be firmly on the Piz train too. I liked his acting last night but I hate where this storyline might be heading.
4. Keith - the scorching hate for the cheating Keith storyline is burning my fingers but I think noirwise this was the only way to go with this storyline. They were watching Maltese Falcon where a dame walks in and disrupts Bogey's life. Of course he was going to sleep with Harmony. I was frankly surprised when it seemed like he wouldn't. And then that crash (although I really think Keith would have more injuries - at least the next day he is going to feel pain in his neck, back, shoulder - possibly chest where the seat belt restrained him - I know, this is part of my job) but I thought they killed him for a minute. Honestly - it's sweeps, people are always getting killed in sweeps. My jaw was agape.
I think if they were going to go there, this was a good way to get Keith in a reckless I could have just died mode. So the cheating was a natural outgrowth. I do expect him to be conflicted in the morning, I don't think his character has been irreparably harmed. So I'm swimming against the tide here because I like that they went there.
5. Lucky Tim- aha. He has layers. Layers and a bad wig but hey layers. I loved the ending scene. I loved the cheating professor. And like Rae I immediately had a don't go all Joey Potter with him Veronica reaction. So yea for the TA.
6. Wallace - all BFF goodness. It's the subtle little things that make their friendship so great. I'm bored with his storyline but I love the way Wallace and Veronica interact. Ahhh.
7. Admiral Moneybags! (Sorry the Star Trek fan in me can't help but love that line. Plus Shatner is all over tv with his new game show so Admiral - hee, hee, hee. Now picturing Khan - Admiral Kirk? to Chekov right before he placed that brain eating worm in his helmet. Just hee!)
Things that could have been better:
1. Ratner was boring. 2. Why can't Logan tell Veronica what he and Mercer were doing? 3. Promo monkeys are frakking idiots at CW. 4. The cheating theme was kind of blatent. I like a little subtle with my VM please.
Questions: 1. Veronica is the queen of jumping to conclusions. Is she ever going to you know learn that she needs more than an idea sometimes? 2. Are they really going to have the rapist be a woman? Is that what the no semen and DNA mean? Really?
I love being excited by Veronica Mars. I still dislike the rape storyline so this will never be up to flail mode for me but overall, this season has been improving week by week. Color me happy.

Huh. Going to have to re-watch this one. I found the pacing to be a little weird. Things I liked: * I liked Piz trying to wake up Wallace, that was cute. It felt like a real college moment to me. * I was really impressed that Wallace chose to give up athletics to stick to his dream of Mechanical Engineering. I really, really admire him for that! I had to take a Machine Assembly Language class twice before I passed it, and my minor was in Computer Science. * Why are there so many cute male profs at Hearst? Not that I'm complaining, but the Criminology prof and the ME prof are both sort of hot. Things I didn't like: * When Logan said, "Do you know who I am?" Ugh. What an a-hole thing to say. It didn't bother me that he stuck his exam in amongst the others, because that seemed more in character. He can be an a-hole, but not a Mel Gibsonish a-hole * Parker seems a little bit *too* willing to get back into the dating scene after the rape. Piz seems like a fairly harmless guy, but I think it would take a lot longer before I felt comfortable about being the initiator (by proxy through Veronica) of a new relationship. Things I'm undecided about: * Keith and his decision to have an affair with a married woman * Logan's friendship with Mercer Random: No one probably cares, but I was poking around and found out the guy who plays Mercer is from Michigan. He grew up in Grand Rapids and went to Michigan State University.

OMG - Keith is having "to hell with it, I almost got killed and I want you" sex. Oh, oh, oh. This happened to me after I got in a "I coulda been killed" accident when a driver who was asleep at the wheel slammed into me and scrunched my car something awful. My ex and I had literally just broken up (for the first time), and he was ahead of me in his car. We had just left his place. I was heading home; he was going elsewhere. He pulled over, of course, having seen my accident. We went back to his place. And yada, yada, yada. And we stayed together another year or so. It was very well done, that's for sure. I can totally see how it would go just like this for them. But boy, talk about the huge potential for making a bad bad decision. But so very noir don't you think? I like the darkness.

Well, looks like Veronica is gonna wind up with the Natalie Portman 'do. Scenes from next week made me very very nervous, they did. Great promo. I can't wait! Yelling Logan, Veronica in danger - looks fantastic.

Agree - Logan was finding out if the TA knew his name, by pretending to be all puffy about "do you know who I am?" When the TA said no, well . . . perfect! Time to mix his test right in there. I shouldn't read the thread anymore, as I have a review to write . . . I enjoyed the ep though, and couldn't resist. Agree that next week looks muy interesante. Do you know anything new, Pixi, about renewal for the show?

I loved the poking of Wallace with the tennis racket. Though I think it would be really cool if he could piss explosives, given his name. </twelve>
