I was hoping to lurk for a few weeks, but I feel your earlier bad news required some response.
Diane, my prayers are with you and all your family, especially your grand-daughter.
Rae. I am relieved that you were not injured in your accident.
I will now try to return to reading the 1000 or so posts that I have missed in the last week. At least I now know how to expand all the posts so it shouldn't take so long. I am a technological idiot.

Kerrie--Welcome back. That would be soo aggravating!
That must have been unpleasant for you, but I'm glad it was only a computer virus and not personal.
//think that I infected you on the S'Cubie message board. //--David, see what you get for attending those wild, late night posting parties. (Is it possible to be infected via the board?)

Shannon, you brought up the Jim Butcher Book on Tape JM did. I've read all four books and they get better as he goes along. I'm hoping somebody buys the movie/tv rights and casts JM as Harry. Harry even gets a leather duster in the 2nd book.

I now have sections 1 & 2 done and it's good I didn't post one because I made some changes in it. I think, though, these two chapters/sections are now ready to go flying to Vlad when he's had a chance to empty his mailbox.

Nope, it's mostly a Spike-Dawn story following whatever episode in which Buffy kills the Ubervamp and drags Spike home. But it's a story, not a friendship or a romance (though naturally those figure in): Spike has his own problem and his own agenda that I believe runs true to the character though it was never directly expressed in the series. I'll be glad of any/all comments on the two completed chapters/sections, either here or by e-mail, whichever you indivdually prefer.
If you hate it, don't tell me. Just keep quiet, like I do.

Rae, I just replied to your e-mail, having come out from under my rock (writing) to take account of the world again.
Please don't be so bothered. The virus isn't your fault and nobody's computer was eaten. You didn't bring home a vampire, and we've all missed you, me included.
No need to catch up on everything. We've done over 1,000 posts in the last week and counting. Just stay with us here in the present and then go snack on anything you like. But don't delay being back with us to dutifully catch up on everything. That way, madness lies, as many of us can attest.
Glad you're back.
Stay.

David, just for my mordant curiosity, is it possible to get a virus via a website or a board? I've never heard of such a thing, but that alone doesn't make it not so, I'm well aware.
Absent Vlad, could you declaim/elucidate on this subject, please?
Thanks,
Nan

I think it somehow got the secret scubie email list because it came to me and that's the only way it could have.

Is the audio book worth the price? Opinion, anyone?
Speaking of roles for JM... I thought he would have been PERFECT as Sirius Black in the Harry Potter books. Just the right mixture of menace, and um, not menace... *g* But they cast Gary Oldman. Go figure.

Mary,
We've also said he would be perfect as Francis Crawford of Lymond in the Dorothy Dunnett books, but he's getting a little too mature, perhaps (for the role, I mean).

Audio worth the price? Iffy. Harry Potter:Gary Oldman is a bit of a scenery chewer. I worry that, casting-wise, JM is being punished for being Spike. I don't understand why he hasn't been cast in anything.
Got Scoobie-Do from Net Flix. What a piece of junk. If this is SMGs career post Buffy...

// David, just for my mordant curiosity, is it possible to get a virus via a website or a board? I've never heard of such a thing, but that alone doesn't make it not so, I'm well aware. // Nan - I'm obviously not David (*checks to make sure* Yeah, definitely not David today) but I know a little something about the subject. It is possible to get a virus from a website and a board. However, most boards probably have precautions in place to cut down on those chances. I say most because boards are still web pages and are controlled by someone other than the users. That all being said, the only way you could get a virus via a web page is if you let that site run an executable file on your machine. This doesn't necessarily mean that you'd have to download a file from that site and open/run it. There are plug-ins and other technologies that are used on websites that actually need to access your system files to run. So, if anyone is using that code on their site they could potentially spread a virus to you. Before anyone freaks out (don't say "Too late")... The chances of you actually getting a virus this way are slim given the tenacity of virus checkers and browser default settings. Typically, by default, your browser will pop up a warning box if the site wants to run something on/access your machine and ask you if it is ok. Also, virus checkers now monitor the same type of activity and will either stop it from happening or warn you. (Note: Depending on what virus checker you have, you can control how tenacious it should be when dealing with email programs and web browsers/pages.) If I were at work, I'd provide you with some links that do a much better job explaining. Hopefully David can weigh in when he gets on and help clarify the issue until Vlad gets back. PS - To address Rusty's response to this original post... We'd have to check with Kerrie but I'd say she probably had our emails listed in her address book. The virus she had (memory block on the actual name) typically grabs all of the emails in a person's address book. I've never heard of it looking at a webpage/board to grab emails.
