"Can't Stand the Yankees" does seem to be the US norm outside the Bronx. Julia, oh, but Donny Baseball was fun to watch Mattingly used to own a restaurant in Evansville, IN called "Mattingly's 23." I happened to be in town the strike-shortened year that would have been his chance to get a WS ring and ate lunch there. He was there with his wife and some friends and was very friendly and gracious. The restaurant is gone but I still have the coasters he signed for us. Tony's claim to baseball fame is that he played against Mattingly in high school.

Hi!!! /me waves What streaming problems were you having? I work in computers part time when I'm not at University... maybe I can help. Madux opens today Hmm. Problem was that mlb.com did some kind of upgrade of their software last week (the people at the tech support line are remarkable unsupportive and don't have much knowledge of their own systems, so I'm unclear what EXACTLY they did). The result was that in order to access the feed at work, I had to dump the cache, etc., of Safari (did I mention I'm on a Mac), and do a couple of things including typing in the web address by hand the first time (instead of using a bookmark), and then it worked (and still does). At home, though, I was still running the older version of the OS, behind by two upgrades from what's standard now (lazy me). Here, I couldn't access the feed with either IE or Netscape - the player window would launch, but no audio. The support folks had no suggestions that worked, and told me they'd find a Mac expert to look it over and get back to me in a couple of days, but that was Saturday. Since the only real difference between this computer and the one at work was the OS, I upgraded the OS last night, 'cause with luck that'll actually fix the problem.

The OS upgrade should fix the problem yes. Sounds like a typica tech support line though

Oooooohhh, say some more bad things about Pedro, you know that is music to our ears. Julia, 1-1 at the end of the second, and the trainwhistles at Safeco have never sounded so sweet. I'll do what I can to keep the music playing throughout the season. There's a writer for the Boston Globe who's not exactly Pedro's biggest fan--actually, I think he just doesn't like any player who makes gazillions and acts like a child--so I'm sure he'll find things to criticize throughout the year. I'll try to pass on the ones that seem legit, as this particular writer can be a little over-sensitive himself. I think Pedro's biggest problem this year may be having Curt "I Never Met a Camera I Didn't Like" Schilling playing right beside him. Schilling is a hard worker, a devoted student of baseball history (he logs in on a posting board as Gehrig38), is known for his extensive charity work, and will actually speak with the press. Our Petey might have to grow up a little. Or not.

Ahem. The A's lost to Texas today. Pitcher's duel. Didn't see any of it, what with couch shopping, but just checked the scores.
And the Yankee/TB game is a close one, currently NY by 1.

Ahem. For those as can get the game (I think it's on ESPN2 everywhere but here and Houston), Roger Clemens is starting the Houston/Giants game today, which means he'll have to bat in just under an hour.
Rachael, loving Clemens in the NL

And Clemens gets to face Barry Bonds. Hard to know who to root for in that one. Aye, well, he walked him with two outs in the first inning. Apparently Bonds has faced Clemens five times: four walks (three intentional), one hit by pitch. So technically Clemens has never "faced" Bonds. He just got booed by his own crowd for the walk.

Meanwhile the Sox just got four runs in the second inning, all with 2 outs. Finally--some timely hitting. And we got lucky when Javy Lopez juggled the ball while trying to tag Bellhorn at the plate. And I'm feeling proud I managed to track down a channel showing the game on our satellite dish in the first place.

So, we're now up 7-1. The good news is Johnny Damon appears to have found his hitting bat--and just stole second as I was typing. Three hits already tonight. The bad news is the chances of him shaving any time soon just got a lot worse, as he remarked that if he had too many 0-fer games the beard would disappear. A successful night like tonight probably means it'll stick around for a while. Blech.

Cardinals in the National League although I do root for the Cubbies, too (unless they're playing the Cards). The Royals are my home-town team in the American League but I still have a soft spot for Boston. No offense to our New York S'cubies but I've hated the Mets since '86 and I can't stand the Yankees (even though Don Mattingly was a nice guy when I met him). Hmmm. Given your allegiance to the Cards, I confess I don't quite remember why you would hate my Mets since 1986. I mean, I could understand if Patti or Diane (do you guys like the Astros?) hated the Mets since '86, but I don't quite know why you would. Or do you have a more "personal" reason for hating the Mets?

And Clemens gets to face Barry Bonds. Hard to know who to root for in that one. I'll never have a problem deciding! <Go read my profile on the website!>
More importantly -- who wants to make book on how long it takes for an NL pitcher -- any pitcher -- "accidentally" to bean Clemens?
Or how many times it happens?

Or how many times it happens? I'm gonna say it happens next month. How many times. . .depends on how aggressive the man himself is this year. But his team is crushing the Giants right now. Clemens was (sigh) on today. AND he got a hit.
