Talking to Patti today gave me an idea What if we did something like a S'cubie Round Robin? I know we've kinda joked about it on the main thread and Diane incorporated something very similar into her Nerd Alerts but what if we fleshed that out? Here are my thoughts on it: - We'd solicit any S'cubies interested in participating and create a thread to keep track of those who plan to write chapters. (This list could grow and shrink as needed -- if new people wanted to join they could or if people found they just didn't have the time, etc.)
- Chapters would be first come, first take! To claim a chatper, you'd post on the RR thread something to the effect of "Chapter 2 is mine you SUCKERS!!!" -- err, or something like that Once the first person has claimed the chapter, everyone else has to wait for the next one. I'd say we try not to repeat writers until everyone has had a chance to write a chapter but this could be flexible depending on whether everyone else is too busy or no one else is willing to take on the current chapter.
- Ok, so now, let's say I write the first chapter (err, I will but don't *have* to). I'd send it to Vlad and he'd put it up on the website. Then he'd let everyone know it's out there and the race to read it and claim the next chapter would begin.
- We could also add a note to the RR webpage that people interesting in participating can go to the discussion board, join, and sign up to write.
I already told Patti that I volunteer to keep the RR thread up to date, etc. I just thought it might be a good way to keep "new" stuff on the site as well as being a good way to draw people in... if they read the story and want to join the fun, it'd encourage them to de-lurk on the board, etc. We'd have to try out this first one to see how it would go and whether there'd be enough interest to have more than one going at a time (maybe even a Buffy one and an Angel one?). Also, the length of the RR would depend on how many people played along. So, what do ya'll think?

well you already know I'm in! That sounds interesting, now if I only knew how to post a chapter onto the site, I would love to write one! With my luck, I'd screw it up somehow. Can someone just tell me...I know I suck at this computer stuff(like I haven't said that a million times!).

Betsy - You'd just send it Vlad and he'd worry about the posting on the site.... ....Hmmm - I really must get his feelings on this... I guess, if it turned out to be a lot of work for him, I could handle converting to HTML and then sending to him so he just had to actually post it. Vlad? Sir?

I guess, if it turned out to be a lot of work for him, I could handle converting to HTML and then sending to him so he just had to actually post it. Vlad? Sir? S'cubie Round Robin - my thoughts on this, if interest seems such that it moves forward: [/li][li]Steps would have to be taken to try to ensure that the effort doesn't peter out or involve waiting months and months for the next installment - that kind of thing will just end up frustrating visitors to the site, and killing all enthusiasm and interest from participants. [/li][li]I'd suggest some simple rules like: "If no-one claims a Chapter within xx days, members of a pre-chosen circle rotate taking it and getting it done within xx days." "If you call the next Chapter as yours, it must be done within xx days, or it is up for grabs again." Etc. [/li][li]Someone besides Vlad could act as a point person for all the Chapters. That person would do any cleaning up and prettying up for Vlad, ensuring a consistent look to the chapters and putting it into whatever final format works best for him. [/li][li]Have some pre-set idea on how long it will be, so writers know what the pace should be and when they have to start thinking about wrapping it up. There are likely other points-of-view on this, but personally, I don't like the idea of the indefinitely long story - writing it, or reading it. People could always start a sequel if the interest was there.
This could work and be loads of fun, giving everyone a chance to write a chapter now and then, etc. But I do think it would need strong leadership and oversight to work. Note that Diane's Nerd Alert effort was fun and just perfect for what it was, but it did not generate high interest or result in a work that was in any way complete. This effort would have to involve more structure and guidance to avoid that fate (I do think structure and rules should be minimal on creative efforts like this, but I think some are needed or it won't happen). So - there's my two cents worth.

Joshua - there is something about the fantasmagorick way you write that just cracks me up. You should stop by more often. Yes, I plan to keep doing my analyses. And I am guessing others plan to keep writing their fic, etc. And while we wait for that JM-capture though, here are some other ideas: [/li][li]YES to Yorick! Use her efforts to promote discussing the Firefly eps for anyone interested.
Cool deal. As soon as RL settles down a bit I'll get to work on reviewing the first episode--I've already got some observations in mind. It's just a matter of getting my brain recharged enough to express them with something approaching coherence. [/li][li]If we don't get a more appealing possibility, we could offer Tru Calling reviews starting in Sept. I heard it was renewed, and I caught a few of the final eps and thought it was getting better. [/li][li] Tru Calling or not, we should pick something "alive" for Sept. I am willing to do the reviews if no one else steps up - though since I am already doing those analyses, would be happy to step aside for someone else. Just saying I am available in a pinch.
And if Jane Espenson is coming onboard the show, as I've heard, it could get even better. Also, not that I'm trying to make this the Yorick show, but with two of the Buffyverse gang headed over to Alias it might be a show enough S'cubies are watching to make a discussion thread worthwhile. Someone here could review the episodes, or we could just follow a link to the reviews I'll be doing for tvtome.com and use that to kick off the talking. Or just talk without needing any reviews to get us started. [/li][li] Would like to see a return of some form of the Pic Contest. [/li][li]Erin mentioned doing AtS analyses starting with Season 1; if she wants to do this, I vote yes. That could be used to generate ep discussion about AtS.
Eetah to both.

However, now that this season is over, the next new season will not start til January '05.(Just read this in TV Guide Online I believe.) While I think it highly possible that many will be watching when it does, that's a long time away. However, that shouldn't prohibit us from talking aobut it at all. And perhaps it will have the effect of interesting a large new viewership for the series. Get with me, Sara, to talk more about possibly expanding us into the Alias-verse. Vlad

I'm excited for the future of the S'cubies. I can't wait for Sara's Firefly reviews. (Erin and Vlad might also want to do a review or two?)
And Tru Calling and Alias are both great options, too.
Looking forward to Erin's Angel S1 reviews and the Round Robin sounds like it will be a fun read.
I also read where they'll be releasing all the episodes they filmed of "Wonderfalls" on DVD. Would there be any interest in looking at that?

I'd have to do a lot of catching up to feel like I knew what was going on for either Tru Calling or Alias. But I'd certainly make the effort if that's where we decide to go.

But as both require people to purchase DVDs, there will be a natural limit on audience size and interest. They are good ideas, and I'm all for them - just want to make the point that we need something more if we want to continue to experience growth and keep things lively and interesting to the masses.

Where do we go from here? Not really any new ideas from me, but I’ll add my 2 cents to the ideas everyone else has already worked so hard to develop. I like the idea of Firefly reviews and discussion. It would be a great way to take us through the summer months. It might be fun to try to replicate actually watching the “season”. We could do it like this: Pick one day a week that is designated “Firefly night” (or every two weeks or whatever would work with Sara’s schedule). We all watch that night, Sara included. Then we leap on the board and discuss like mad, just like we would do if it was first airing. Then a few days later, Sara posts her review and we all discuss our reactions to that, etc. As we add eps, everyone can start commenting on arcs and character development, etc. And we have a strict “no talking about spoilers” rule for future eps that haven’t been “watched” by the group yet – not only for those few folks who may really be watching them for the first time but also to just make it feel like a “first time” for us all.. In other words, try and treat it just like it was a new show. This could give Firefly the chance it never had – to be explored by all of us the way it should have been done in the first place. All the eps, all in the right order, presented the way it should have been, etc. (Except we could allow discussion of DVD commentaries and so on as they come up, if we want.) I like the idea of going through past Buffy and/or Angel eps, too. (And the idea of switching between the shows in the right way so we are really watching them as they aired is cool – someone will need to post a little schedule to help us all keep on track.) In order to keep discussion sparking, maybe we could do a few things like: set a schedule of watching for these too – maybe have rotating reviewers. And how about posting questions prior to watching the ep? We could have one group of people suggest them or we all could. Like trivia questions to watch for in the ep. And also questions that will spark conversation later, sort of like “Coffee Time” questions or like you’d get in a class or book group, like: “In this episode, Wes does not discuss his decision to take Connor with the rest of the team. What factors do you feel influenced his decision? What repercussions do we see in later eps? How would you have handled this differently? Discuss!” Or would that seem too much like summer school? Round robin or other kinds of writing would be scary but potentially fun. We’ll need ways to keep it from getting bogged down – folks who’ll leap in if someone can’t do their part and other stuff like Spring talked about. And maybe suggest that folks “buddy-up” if they want – write with a partner? That might encourage more to be involved. Lots of times I can sketch out my ideas, but not really put them into story format. And sometimes it’s the other way around. Partners might help each other with that. The idea of us all trying our collective hands at a mythical season 6 is very intriguing and would be fun. Especially if we tried to all write it together. Maybe start with a sketched-out arc for the season and basic things we want to happen and then plug in eps as we go with different teams writing each ep, etc. – like we were all writing for Joss. I mean, it would be a bit of work, but maybe not as much as we think if we divided the parts out. Lastly, I agree that we need to have a regularly scheduled show to watch together in the fall if at all possible. Internal resources will only go so far. Hey, maybe we will have an animated Buffy to watch by then! Lola Wow. All of this sounds good!! I am such a geek.

I love the idea of scheduling the viewings as if they were showing on TV - We could have Firefly night, Angel night, treat them just like we have with Angel this season - we have our analysts and reviewers - and maybe guest reviewers too, cause I found that fun to do... ah...thank goodness for DVDs - and or tapes!

I like all the ideas.
I have only recently started watching Alias. I love it, but I haven't analysied it or thought of analysing it. I would be interested in reading an anlysis (seaon, character, theme or episode) if anyone has the time or inclination. At this point I am thinking that Alias is just an interesting drama without any particularly profound philosophical issues. I would love to be proved wrong. I raise this issue, not to be tiresome (I know I am), but because if we want to minimise the number of false starts we would need to choose a series that has some depth (preferably philosphically close to the Jossverse). It would also be good to go into the next season wth a substantial amount of insight into the issues rather than just rushing in blind.
I don't want to be negtive, but we have discussed AtS and BtVS and I imagine that we will continue to discuss AtS and BtVS sporadically as the mood and inspiration takes us, but I think a new additional focus is needed to keep the board fresh.
This is just my two cents. Alias and AtS are both around ep 15 in Australia.
