One year ago today, Matthew had just joined our ranks, and...well, if you don't remember his posting style:
Matthew, January 24th, 2004, Part 103, Reply #343: It's wednesday somewhere in the 'verse...
Hullo, all.. fascinating crap in here, the last couple of days. Sucks to be OCD enough to have to read (or at least skim) every damn' post. Ah well. Here I sit, equipped with my pages of notes...
Nan: I see this has already been covered for you, but for anyone else who doesn't want to voice the question: a pearl necklace, in sexual terms, is the result when someone is lying on their back, with a male straddling them, facing them. This male has just achieved Happyland. The straddle-ee's neck is involved, and the beading and pearlescant nature of a certain bodily fluid is involved as well. See also ZZ top's song Pearl Necklace. If this description is in too poor a taste, throw a brickbat at me and I'll remove it.
makd: though I know the proper meaning, I always thought "frottage" sounded like an act performed between consenting amphibians. Or by Miss Piggy, if she's feeling particularly generous that day.
Rachael: regarding your analysis of "clementine": EWW! I'd reread the lyrics.. unless it's your theory that the Clementine is one of Lot's daughters...
And regarding looks... I am stunned by a pretty exterior, myself. Though I find myself having a much broader definition of what the term "pretty" consists of. A couple of things that can mitigate factors: smiling always makes a woman look stunning (to me, that Victoria's Secret ad with the models laughing their arses off was twenty times sexier than any of the ones where they moodily stride with the "we are not amused" expression on their faces. Laughing and smiling is just plain SEXY.); the face just lights up, no matter the features. And give me a goofy, unselfconscious laugh, and I melt. Another mitigator (like an alligator, only different) is the essential nature. The ugliest woman I ever met could have been the most beautiful: I'm partial to the Neanderthal gene pattern, and this girl had it in spades. Pale skin spotted with dark brown freckles over every inch I could see, Copper colored curly hair, high cheekbones and the heart shaped face overall, and stacked quite nicely too; sorta like Nicole Kidman's prettier sister. Then she opened her mouth. I despise evil(and I believe in its existence, and most of the time, in the fact that there is somewhat of a balance in people of good and evil intentions); and this woman summarized that nature for me. Malevolent, inconstant, backbiting, destructive, divisive, dishonorable, completely lacking in sympathy and empathy, and mercenary to a degree that I've not even seen in strip clubs. And that was what I saw of her BEFORE she noticed that I looked at her like she had crawled out of the slime underneath a rock. I was one of three males in an office with twenty women: the other two she had eating out of her hand. After she figured out that her eyelashes weren't gonna get her special treatment from me, she got even nastier. Hee! and then I laughed at her. Which semi-indirectly caused her to go off on a fit of such screaming irrelavancy that my two male bosses HAD to fire her. I got cookies in my office mailbox the next morning.
And Amber Benson? is a complete and total hottie, with her luminous smile, beautiful eyes, mother-lover-concubine-sister vibe, and the wicked twinkle she can put into things...
On similar notes, Diane: whenever I see "the truth about cats and dogs" I keep wondering who on Bog's green earth cast Jeanine Garafalo as the "ugly" one, when she is beautiful, and much more distinctive than Uma Thurman's washed out, odo-featured contenance (though she was AWESOME in Kill Bill, but that had nothing to do with a particular look). Oddly, on an only slightly related topic, My ex once related to me the story that she had told a black female friend of hers that she was "as beautiful as Whoopi Goldberg" and was astonished that the girl was insulted. She related to me the fact that Whoopi is considered startlingly ugly to black women, at least. Baffles me, as that smile.. sigh. And the fat people thing? It's because we are "responsible" for our own appearance. So many lovely pieces of humour that have the punchline "get off your fat arse and exercise." And hell, that may be true in many cases, but in many, it ain't. Nothing makes me more delighted than to hear some little 89 pound little bow-head declare her disgust for people who actually enjoy eating, when she has the dubious pleasure of being disgusted by a greasy burger or a nicely marbled steak... evolutionary u-turns. Put them out in the wild and they'd eat grass and twigs all day. And die of starvation because fats are TWICE as rich in energy as carbs or proteins either one... It's why we salivate at the smell of bacon cooking. Most of us have ancestors who chased after the richest food to even barely survive: the vegans of the Ice Age survive now only as museum displays. For 99% of human history, getting ENOUGH to eat has been the biggest concern of a human's life. For this reason, our bodies are GREAT at preparing for adversity. In this current rich habitat we Americans and certain other first and second world countries are lucky enough to have been born into, our very BODIES are wired against keeping that svelte figure (angular and bony, calista flockhart, ugh) that our culture seems to raise as the figurehead. I'm fatter than I'm "supposed" to be, but I also get great pleasure out of the sensual joy of just eating. So I accept the tradeoff cheefully: I'm comfortable. And god help me if I EVER EVER date another girl who thinks that she is "a horrible, bloated pig" because she has gained five pounds(yeah, yeah, I know, eating disorders, distorted visions of reality, anorexia, bulemia, etc. I'm talking about the girl who manages to order a salad with no dressing, picks at it, then steals fries from everyone around her. ). God. Give me Kate Winslet circa Titanic over Kate Moss any day of the freaking week. Anyways, I have no idea whereall I wandered above, but I'm gonna let it stand. And Rob: In Shrek, He DID get the beauty in the end!!! To me,Shrek was all about the ogre being so ugly he could not attract anyone. But he fell for Fiona because of (yes, somewhat her looks, but mostly) her spirit, her attitude, and their shared experiences. So much in love, that he was willing to overlook her human contenance, and profess his love, even though he knew she and everyone else would see him as the hideous ogre. But then, the look on his face, when she is transformed into this stunningly beautiful, tulip-eared redheaded ogress goddess... It's more than he can even dream of!!! Huh. So I guess it sorta proves both our points. Sorta.
That's enough crap piled up for one post.

One year ago today, Nan had found for us some truly awful examples of bad description in fanfic, and brought them to us, complete with entertaining commentary:
Nan, January 25th, 2004, Part 104, Reply #25: For your reading pleasure
I came across this today. In all fairness, the three sentences weren't in sequence, but were dropped from a great height to splat within a couple of paragraphs of one another.
This sort of awfulness really must be appropriately recognized.
Now, in this new dimension, they looked into each other's eyes as the stepped into each others arms, and her chin rested nicely under his chin.
Now, try really hard. How can one person, standing, facing another, rest her chin under his? I defy anyone to imagine this.
Slowly, she continued the hypnotic swaying to the music in his arms.
Do his arms also do melodic renditions of the Ramones and the Sex Pistols?
If she hadn't been holding onto the sink, they would have both crumbled to the floor.
And crumbles are soooo hard to get off the linoleum!
Just couldn't let these pass without sharing.

One year ago today, there was a debate raging over whether Spike is being accurately characterized in Soul Purpose. Linda contributed this gem to the discussion. BTW, if you read closely, you can also see Linda battling the "D-demon", as we all were on this week in history....
Linda, January 26th, 2004, Part 104, Reply #179: More on 5.10 Soul Purpose
Hi Nan,
While, I agree with you about Spike being a hedonist at base, I don't quite buy the report being real. I did not see the hedonist aspect of him at all in this episode, except during the wonderful swirling slo-mo fight scene. His interactions with his on-screen rescuees was distant at best, insulting (but funny) at "worst." In fact, he seemed more interested in the Batman-type weapon gadgets than the people he saved.
I just found the Sex Pistols and hooch thing out of synch with the Spike that was actually onscreen during the ep.
I admit that the above is based upon my personal, emotional reaction to the episode. I WANT Spike to be happy and start enjoying his post-Buffy life. I didn't see any evidence of it. And I was looking. The last time I saw any cheerful hedonism onscreen was back in Destiny, when he first became solid and got to feel, drink, male-bond, almost get shagged and fight Angel.
After that, his drinking began to get serious. When Spike is Buffy-depressed, he seems to drink alone. I don't remember his ever seeking out company specifically for commiseration. {Yes, yes, in Conversations with Dead People, he talked to that woman, but she was the one who approached him, not the other way around. And in Entropy, he went to the Magic Box for a cure, not company.}
And the Spike I saw seemed almost Buffy-resurrection-depressed.
So, no, I still can't quite picture him offering to drink some "hooch" and listen to the Sex Pistols with some grateful victim of the day.
And in re-watching the episode this weekend, I noticed that the only fake!Doyle remark ( aside from " destiny" and "<not saying the B-word>" ) that provoked something other than a level hostile skepticism from Spike was when Lindsey brought up Angel after the first rescue. THAT seemed (IMO) to get Spike's attention.
And if Spike is playing Lindsey, maybe the "Helping the helpless," line was more than just an insult. Maybe it was a line of communication with Angel that EveL would miss, but that Angel would not.
Yes, yes, WAY out there speculation-wise. But it is within the realm of possibility that Spike, in stalking Angel in In the Dark or haunting W&H all this time, could have known about this phrase (and heard the name Doyle) in connection with Angel's early operation.
Linda, who really DID have a RL visit with her parents this weekend, despite the Whedonverse obsession.

One year ago today, deborah was talking about Spike's domestic situation, and what it might say about his psychological condition.
deborah, January 27th, 2004, Part 105, Reply #313: Re: Blood & Smokes-A Lack Thereof
I just posted this on Nan's "Soul Purpose" review thread and then realized it didn't specifically relate to anything she said in her wonderful review, so I'm copying it here:
*********************************************
I know this as already been touched on but I've been thinking a lot about the lack of blood in Spike's fridge. I tried to post some comments about this yesterday but Moloch ate them; unbeknownst to me, the part I was trying to post to had closed whilst I was typing.
Is the presence of alchohol and the obvious lack of any (vamp) food (blood) in his fridge evidence of Spike's malaise? Are we meant to conclude that Spike is too depressed and adrift to care about taking care of himself?
Has anyone else notice that cigarrettes have been conspicuous by their absence since Spike recorporealized? I recall JM saying that in these times, smoking in film is associated with badness. I wonder if Spike has given it up, as further evidence of his white-hat status. Or maybe, since Spike is a white-hat and poor JM has been trying to quit for over three years now, Joss thought a recorporealized Champion didn't need to be seen smoking anymore.

One year ago today, Vlad told us about a new idea he'd had for the website:
Vlad, January 28th, 2004, Part 106, Reply #1: A S'cubie Announcement
Howdy folks!
No, I don't have any amazing Rob Sorenson Chronicles of Truth fiction for you today; no spectacular Spring Spikecentricity analysis.
Instead, on this Smutday...errr..Wicked Wednesday, I am going to direct all your attention to a new area on the S'cubie Website.
It's on the main page, towards the bottom of the Main Menu, beside the Buffy Puzzle area where Spring's awesome crosswords are housed.
It's called Just 'Cause. I urge you all to go please take a look. I could describe it here, but I spent a long time doing that in the page itself,so, go take a gander.
And with that, I'll let you get back to your regularly scheduled raunch. *wink*

One year ago today, Shan was talking about Damage:
Shan, January 29, 2004, Part 107, Reply #169: Re: The Soulful Spike Society, Part 107 Angel 5:11
I think we're in for something big soon. The opening scenes with Gunn waffling on to Fred about how they're doing so much good now "from the inside" or whatever, cut straight to Angel wondering aloud (again) whether they've done the right thing, then Angel smacked in the face at the end with the great wet codfish of Buffy's mistrust.
Angel is seriously having second, third, umpteenth thoughts about the W&H move; Fred seems to be only a little bit behind him. Wesley...still an unknown. It seems he was the most changed by the Connor/Jasmine mindwipe, since he lost a whole couple of seasons of character development from not having "stolen" Connor. So it's hard to tell really what he is anymore, even though they had the Wes-centric episode a couple of weeks ago (and WTF has happened that they haven't mentioned it since? or the Fred deal associated with it? Gaaa!). Lorne is way under used, so it's hard to see where he stands with the W&H dilemma.
Gunn, now...it looks like they're playing him right up with wanting to hang on there if/when everybody else decides to make the break (which I think they will and, no, I didn't spoil for that opinion). Nobody but Gunn got something completely different in their lives out of the "joining" with W&H, did they? Angel is still a champion (if a sort of CEO/backseat one); Fred is still a scientist, albeit with a great deal more funding; Wesley is still a researcher and Lorne is still the lounge-lizard guy (with a cell phone in each hand). But Gunn got the big whammy; now he doesn't just "hit people" any more. He gets the "juice" in a major way. I can see that being hard to give up. I wish the writers would send one of his old buddies around like they did when he was at AI for a while. Like "Yo, man; where you been?"
Whew! I don't ususally get so talkative but this was a fabbo episode! We asked for it and we got it, didn't we? They've shown us the meat! (No, I don't mean that in a Wednesday way, either)

One year ago today, Spring (and others) told us why she believes Spike feels remorse for killing Robin Wood's mom:
Spring, January 30th, 2004, Part 108, Reply #46:
Spike told Buffy he let Wood live "on account of I killed his mom." (I may not have the words exactly right, but it was close to that).
So yes - I think it does indicate his remorse and knowledge of how wrong he was. I can't think what else he would mean.
He had no other reason to let the guy live - he could easily have gotten away with killing him as self-defense, and in fact, it would have been safer for him if he had done so - erased the serious Wood-threat completely.
Basically, he had no other reason for not killing him.
For Spike, I thought that moment was the moment he really broke free from "I'm doing it all for Buffy," and, on his own, made the right decision, for the right reasons.
No one pulled him off Wood, and everyone would have understood if he had killed Wood - the evidence that Wood was trying to kill him was overwhelming. He could have gotten away with killing Wood. But he didn't.
You could see his remorse again in his face, when he admitted to the killing of the two Slayers again this week.
That's how it read to me.
Wood was very sympathetic himself as a character here, even as he went after Spike. He lost that battle, but he came back to continue fighting the good fight - he, like his mom, ended up putting the mission first.

One year ago today, becca was thinking hard about the cars driven by the folks on Angel, and what those vehicles might have to say about the characters:
beccaelizabeth, January 31st, 2004, Part 108, Replay #337: It's all about the car you drive
Had a random thought- You live in L.A. It's all about the car you drive.
Okay, so, look at their cars.
Angel isn't just driving a convertible any more. He has one, but he has a bunch of others too, and trouble deciding what to drive (what to do?). 12 shiny toys with pretty tinted glass. Part of the deal he made. 12 to play with but none of his own. Actually 11 to play with because
Spike borrowed the Viper. Nice car, but not his. Not even Angel's really, just part of the deal he did. Not nicked or won in battle. Just borrowed, with permission even this time. Worse than driving a rental, nothing like borrowed wheels to say just passing through.
Wes I think still has his bike. There is a bike at the beginning of Unleashed. Also three other cars, but I know too little about cars to know what car they are.
Bikes carry only one other person. Loner symbol, you and your lady (or Angel in a pink helmet, heh). Not big on the self protection but they get you places fast. Not much room for baggage though so I think a bit of wishful thinking on Wesley's part.
None of those cars were Gunn's truck. The 'Don't go dissing my girl.' truck that he sold his soul for. 'Didn't think I had a future then. - Now I do.' leans over to kiss the girl- a girl he doesnt have any more. Trouble with defining your future by who you love, if it all falls apart what do you have to hold on to?
Three cars and a bike, five heroes. If I had to bet on who wasn't driving themselves I'd say Fred. Who did she ride with? Of course that would mean Lorne was driving one of the muscle cars. And are all of those Angel's toys? Are they all borrowing bits of his deal? The first car we see matches one from Conviction. The second might, but all I can see on my DL is its black and shiny, plate 2PCE329. We only see 7 in Conviction but there is a whole lack of visible number plates. (Legality?!)(And are those vintage cars? Again with the lack of car knowledge.) Two out of 3 cars in Unleashed, I can't see a readable plate. If one of them isn't using Angel's toys, which one?
Despite Spike's 'knew you'd pick the Viper' Angel hasn't been consistent about which car he drives. Despite his 'what would I do with 12 cars' he hasnt just chosen one and stuck with it. No particular one is more his than the others. Except, maybe, the one Spike just borrowed. But only when Spike borrowing it is at issue. Whatever car Spike took in Destiny was red, the one he was sitting in in Just Rewards was black. Both times dialogue says 'the Viper'. Does Angel have two in a choice of colors or something?? Amazing color changing car. Also suggests the word viper is the point here (and they do keep saying it).
Okay, now I've typed a whole bunch and am still feeling radically unoriginal. Doubt I've noticed anything new. Just thinking, its something to watch.

One year ago today, Lola was talking about all SORTS of things, including the alarming fact that she LIKES Minnesota winters....
Lola, February 1st, 2005, Part 109, Reply #5: Lots of random thoughts
Gosh – so many posts and ideas and neat stuff to think about since I was last here! I won’t even try to catch up with everything, but here’s a few thoughts from skimming through.
I’m gonna take a page from Matt’s book and try responding in clumps.
Julia – absolutely cracked up the first time I saw your “sharp as a” quote. Ron G’s delivery of that line was just so perfect. Oh, oh – and Jack Soo with his “mooshy mooshy” absolutely killed me! And the name thing is what I get for being all e.e. cummings and un-capped. Actually, I like the sound of Iola – but the rhythm doesn’t quite fit as well into “whatever Iola wants, Iola gets…”
Reetta & Patti – Reetta, loved your “good ol’ Andrew is still the same…” – ‘cuz that’s something that really struck me too. The same endearing mix of geek-speak phrases and complete ignorance. “As they say in Mexico……..no, we’re not…gonna do that.” Hee hee! And when he stood up to Angel, it reminded me of him standing up to the First (looking like Warren) – which, when I think about it, makes me feel even worse for Angel. Patti – how true and amazing that Joss & Co. can make us simultaneously love Andrew and hate him for what he did to Jonathan. (And I feel better knowing that you and all the stalwart technopagans are there to help!)
Karen & I can't remember who else – the “kill them all” line in Soul Purpose actually gave me shivers! Not only the words, but DB’s delivery. Like Angel was on the edge of almost snapping, but with a shrill edge. Except that Angel doesn’t, you know, get hysterical.
Diane & Ellie & Julia & others – 2 favorite Dark Shadows memories: the song that Quentin was always playing while sitting in the dark by the fire – I think it was “Shadows of the Night”? And Barnabus, after he became a “good guy” fighting with some baddie who, without knowing B was a vampire, stabbed him in the stomach with a sword thing. And Barnabus just looks down, pulls out the sword and looks up at the guy with this, “now I’m really mad” look.
Ellie & Makd & others – Astaire! Ah………….le sigh! Has anyone else seen “Broadway Melody of 1940” with Fred and Eleanor Powell? Yeah, the big number at the end is great – “Begin the Beguine” with a stage that wouldn’t fit into any real Broadway theater in this reality and the entire Duke Ellington orchestra and actual costume change midway through the number. But my fave is Fred doing “I’ve Got My Eyes on You” – dancing with, of all things, Eleanor’s make-up compact. Just…too….perfect. It’s the little things that’ll go right to your heart, like the way he would put his hand on the small of Ginger’s back as they are dancing, but turned around so it was his wrist touching – gives such an elegant line to the arm.
Sue – I really do like winter. Would I lie to you? Hmmmm. You don’t know me, maybe I would. Maybe I really live in Samoa and I’m just making up the whole cold thing to gain sympathy. Actually, yesterday was very nice – light snow coming down and I think we actually were warmer that the 10 they said we we’re gonna hit. I kept thinking it was much nicer weather for the folks doing the Twin Cities Loppet (big cross country ski thing). Today is more snow – looking like maybe a foot or so, and not so cold. When you’re in a real cold snap, it’s nice to hear it’s gonna snow, ‘cuz usually that means it’s gotta warm up some in order to let the white stuff come down.
I really should go.....really. Try to watch Damage for the third time either tonight or tomorrow night and see if I can’t come up with some thoughts that haven’t already been mentioned. Granted, they’ll probably be teeny tiny thoughts, but I gotta make some kind of effort.
Lola

One year ago today, Sue was having us all make lists of the romantic pairings on BtVS and A:tS, and then she used those lists to make some comparisons:
Sue, February 2nd, 2004, Part 109, Reply #117: Re: "Romance" on Angel
Now, the point of making those lists.
BtVS always had an element of the "soap opera" about it. I don't mean that in a derogatory way. I'm using it to denote that in the midst of MOW's and Big Bads there were on-going relationship stories as well. And these relationship stories --the angst, the ups and downs often took center stage or were integral to the plotline.
Not as much on Angel. Clearly, this was on purpose. Angel was never supposed to be "Buffy's Boyfriend in L.A."
There is still a LOT of relationship angst going on but 1) it more often involves changing loyalties and friendships (Wes in season 3) and is often much subtler.
Whereas I loved B/S I am enjoying not having the male/female relationship angst at the forefront in Angel. We've said we think AtS needs more estrogen, but I'm currently thinking--maybe not.
I'm enjoying the males trying to figure out how to be friends, colleagues and really, bond as family---in a very male way.
Really, looking back. Hated that Fred came between the Wes and Gunn friendship. Would really hate for any female (not just Buffy) to come between the growing bond between Angel and Spike.
Just thinking.

One year ago today, Julia was talking about the troika, and her theory that Andrew was raised in an abusive home. Here's the post that launched the discussion:
Julia, February 3rd, 2004, Part 109, Reply #447: Re: The Soulful Spike Society Part 109
I was actually going to watch my tape of " Dead Things" today, to make up for having to choose between that and a pivotal episode of Angel which The Daughter had not seen, but when the time came I thought about Katrina and decided there wasn't anything new I'd learn from it now.
There are things about this episode which are essential to understanding the rest of S.6 and all of S.7, especially the line " Do you even like me?" but today all I can think about is how it makes Warren's role as sociopath and corrupter entirely overt, and sets Jonathan on the path which ends in his death, and begins to show just how empty Andrew is.
I read a review of " Damage" today by Peter David, who I guess is a well known SF writer (The Hulk comics and Star Trek) and he was all bent out of shape by Andrew not being in jail, and after watching " Dead Things" even more than CWDP, I find myself sliding, for a while, in to that position. Warren is an active sociopath, Jonathan a thrill- and power-seeker who finds his ethical limits in time to save Buffy, but Andrew is a cipher; in some ways I see him as a more benign example of the soulless child in "Under My Skin".
So, even though I find the crypt door scene one of the most gorgeously produced and acted bits of seven seasons of BtVS, I think today I'm glad I missed the episode.
Julia, and does anyone else get the feeling, through BtVS 6 & 7, that "Tucker's Brother" might be from an abusive home, and Tucker the abuser?

One year ago today, Gail gave us her review of the 100th Episode of Angel:
Gail, February 5th, 2004, Part 100(+11), Reply #144: Re: Soulful Spike Society, Pt. 100(+11) - EP. 5:12
Ah, Cordy, we hardly knew ye.
If she had to go, Cordelia Chase had a magnificent send-off. The episode presented her at her very best - thank God not Saint Cordy or Posessed Evil Cordy of last season, but Snarky Cordy, Warm passionate Cordy, the friend, the fighter for truth, justice, and Ferragamo pumps. And she and Angel finally had their Moment, long denied.
And some nice Spike action! Didja notice that no one in the FG went 'gasp, he's evil again, the disgusting evil vampire' when Spike nipped Cordy? Although Angel beat him off her and made sure Spike wasn't going to attack Cordy again, everyone gave him the benefit of the doubt. Instead of snarking off in a snit, Spike explained why he had attacked Cordy. By the way, Spike may have been set up by Lindsey, but he did show initiative. Lindsey had told Spike that Cordelia was evil, and presumably planned on Spike killing or incapacitating Cordy. Spike didn't go full-out into killer mode, he tested her first. Showing a bit of sense, finally! I loved Spike's definitely fullout temper-tantrum against the TV or whatever it was he was playing games on; I've often felt the same frustration with my tech toys.
And the gang invited Spike out with them to celebrate and Angel didn't object! (was it Fred or someone else who invited him?) He may not be one of the team, but he's accepted as a good guy and ally.
Harmony was very funny tonight.
QUIBBLES - Jeez, how low is the budget? Couldn't they give Cordy a hairdo that wouldn't look like someone took a machete to her hair? Not to mention a decent outfit? I supposed I should be pleased that she was brunette again...
And what was the business with Lorne's commenting about demon urine? Haven't we had enough 'peepee' jokes this season?

~ CC is fantastic. Having Cordy just emphasized how “off” things were having the FG at W&H. I was completely unspoiled, except for knowing that CC was back for one episode, so I expected her to die. But midway thru the episode I had this faint faint hope...... Alas. Julia, I like your endings too.
~ I need to rewatch the final scenes with Angel. One thing I didn’t like about this episode is that it seemed to imply the only problem Angel had was a loss of confidence. At first Cordy is stunned that Angel’s the CEO of Hell, Inc. and Spike – Spike is the hero.... Then at episode’s end she seems to think she’s got her guy back on track, yet his conclusion seems to be that he can work within the belly of the beast. IMO, this is a bad direction, but I’ll wait to see what Joss has in store before I come to a final conclusion. (Often, I need to see the whole season before I can make an assessment.) I really can’t see how I can be satisfied, though. On the one hand, if Angel succeeds within W&H, and Cordy inspired him to do so, then everything leading up to “You’re Welcome” was mostly a matter of Angel being wussy and fearful and unable to step up to the plate. Also, it means Spike is wrong, and I don’t like that. Yet, if it turns out that Angel can’t succeed in using W&H to advantage, then it means Cordy’s return did not get her guy back on track.
Weighing in on others’ spec-
*The big bad in the basement is still untapped. I too think I saw a dragony thing in shadows? I think it’s more than a bomb and more than a machine that made Lindsay supermatrixy...
*If Lindsay is indeed gone, then I think the conclusion of that arc sucked. I don’t believe his motivation was to take over W&H and get Angel because Angel “has his position.” I agree with those who are expecting further developments. What evidence is there that the portal took his to the senior partners?
*Eve getting busted – makes me think Lindsay didn’t have her best interests at heart...like he set her up to take his fall and her game is over but his is still going on.
*I still kinda want Spike to take the “grassroots” approach to fighting evil. Sure, cooperate with the FG, but not be a W&H employee...

OK, I'm only on page 2, but I wanted to say this before I forgot:
(this is speculation, NOT a spoiler) Could Cordy have passed the visions to Angel w/that kiss, as Doyle passed them to her? I think she did...

One year ago today, Len had this to say about "You're Welcome":

Sooooooo....
I thought the last Angel was pretty decent. It was nice to see Cordelia one last time. I was ABOUT to yell bloody murder when it looked like she was walking out of his life for no reasonable reason. Making her a ghost/last gift from TPTB was a nice twist.
I was surprised that they wrapped up Lindsey's thread so quickly - I was expecting an extended arc dealing with his machinations. Perhaps he'll return in some way before it's all over.
Was I the only one who thought "I'm Batman" when he said "I'm Angel"? It was still a nice scene! But are we supposed to think his doubts have now been erased? It would seem too neat a wrap up to the extended arc of the sedustion of Angel & Co. by W&H. On the other hand, I feared at the start of the season that the story arc would go: Angel & co slowly seduced/entering grey areas, they realize they've compromised too much, they reject W&H, they fight their way out. That was the obvious arc. So if we're NOT getting that, I'm all the more interesting in seeing what we WILL get!
