Wow, this really felt more like a season premiere to me. Introduction of new characters, and widening the scope of the story, fitting the pattern of all the other previous premieres. I guess they couldn't have opened with this, though. I really liked this episode, even more on the 2nd viewing. But of course it is a Drew Goddard episode. leftylady eta - I just found out the other writer Brian K. Vaughn - is a Buffy Season 8 writer. And to top it off, the guy graduated from the same Cleveland high school as my friend's son, the year after the son. I'll have to ask if he knew him there or thru their alumni functions.

Jeff "Doc" Jensen over at EW has, in his review of this ep, pointed out that our four new characters share more than a few similarities with another famous quartet: the Fantastic Four. To summarize: Daniel Faraday=Mr. Fantastic/Reed Richards: Both are scientists with less-than stellar social skills, and one could say Daniel has a fairly flexible view of himself and the truth. As for Daniel's name itself, Michael Faraday was a pioneer in the field of electricity and electro-magnetics, while Daniel of course was the prophet who bearded a lion in its den and interpreted dreams. Miles Strom=The Human Torch/Johnny Storm: Same snarky manner, same fiery wit, and Strom is an anagram of Storm—which is the Torch's real last name. Matthew told me last night "Miles" means "warrior," and the two names together sound an awful lot like the word "maelstrom." Charlotte Staples Lewis=Invisible Woman/Sue Storm: Both ladies exhibited the means to protect themselves via something no one else could see. Jeff speculates that if the analogy is accurate, then perhaps Charlotte is hiding something else about herself right in plain sight (a few fans wonder if she's related to Ben's childhood friend Annie). Frank Lapidus=The Thing/Ben Grimm: Lapidus is a form of granite, and of course the Thing was covered entirely in stone. Plus Ben Grimm was the pilot on the space mission that gave the FF their abilities. Oh, and the number that appeared on his t.v. (888-548-0034) apparently works if anyone's interested in trying. For now, Jensen's dubbed them "the Freighter Four." Oh, and our castaways are divided between the Jack Pack and the Locke Lot. FAIR WARNING: If you click on the link to read the whole piece, be warned there is a casting spoiler towards the end. So if you've remained completely in the dark and want to stay there, best to either not click or stop reading after the entry on Lapidus. And a poster at zap2it.com also had this to say about "Lapidus": "Lapidus = Lapidus is a Jewish family name derived from the Hebrew biblical male given name Lapidot, husband of the prophetess Deborah (Judges 4:4). The literal meaning of the name is "torches" or "candles"." As for names of famous scientists, philosophers, etc, we also have Minkowski; from Wikipedia: "Hermann Minkowski (June 22, 1864 – January 12, 1909) was a Lithuanian-born German mathematician, of Jewish descent, who created and developed the geometry of numbers and who used geometrical methods to solve difficult problems in number theory, mathematical physics, and the theory of relativity." Coda [snipped] They're there specifically for Ben. He's the real Kurtz. [snipped] Yes, the real "Heart of Darkness". leftylady

Part III Medecine, Tunisia This is Charlotte, I presume. Man wants to know if they are lost. Dinosaur dig? Polar Bears!!!!!!!!!!!! Excavating with a ginormous pick axe. Geez, no wonder the guy's pissed. DHARMA symbol. DHARMA in Tunisia. God knows how many years ago. And Charlotte runs into Locke's group. This doesn't bode well. Ah, Juliet took the initiative to follow Jack. And Jack signaled Kate with his eyes. (hee!) Hee indeed! ;D good catch!

Part I So everybody else did abandon Kate and Jack. Oh, I guess they didn't they're just not interested in Daniel? Locke yet again predicts the weather. Hurley's looking after Vincent. Locke's got to go back to the cabin. It's like he's got a earpiece in his ear. Mystery of the Cabin. Locke's not too happy that Hurley knows about it. Hurley being another person to have seen the cabin and Jacob makes me remember that he was someone who kept trying to get on the plan and it was like something was trying to stop him. Does the island want him there? Does the island not want him there? Seeing the cabin seems to imply he's "special", in a way sort of like Locke and Benry, but I'm betting not exactly like. This is what I want to know! I mean, I have my theory, but I want to know if I'm right. ;D Island of the Just Too Damn Many To Be Coincidences, isn't it?

Part IV Eleuthra, Bahamas What does this guy know about the crash? Ah, he can tell that the wreckage a fake. He was supposed to be on the plane! He's not wearing parachute gear. Cowbell! Wait, there's been a cow with a cowbell wandering around the island all this time? Taller Ghost Walt. Ben takes advantage of the moment. And she's not dead. Of course. Bullet proof vests. Again suspicious. Now, Locke's pissed at Ben. This guy is Frank Lopitas. He was the pilot. And the helicopter is intact. Can't read the writing though. I think the cow spends most of its time hanging out with the polar bears. In fact, I think there's a special smoker's lounge kind of place on the island where bears and sharks and cows and mystical horses hang out, chatting and playing cards and occasionally running out to make a dramatic and spooky appearance and then returning. It's where Vincent spends his time, chillin' and catching up on all the island gossip whenever he's not playing the innocent happy pet. Or, you know, making plans for world domination.

So, they were all declared dead just 'cuz they couldn't salvage anything from the plane? Ooooh, ghost chaser guy! Ghost buster! A real ghost sensing guy, but one that steals the money. Hmmmmm. Oh, Matthew! So clever! It was code! And he wants to go to her body so he can read what happened using his spooky ghost reading power thing. Sawyer is right, Benry's just messing with your head. But I'd still like to see Karl smack him around. If we can't see Rousseau do it, someone has to. Yoda thinks James is brave and daring and handsome. It's practically a proposal. Aaaaaand here comes the smack down. And I tend to think Sawyer is more right than Locke on this one. About Benry already having a plan to get them all as opposed to being helpless and all. Is it just me, or is there something not quite all there about Dan? Jack wink! What's the plan, Jack the man? Sayid!! Woot!! Oh, Jack, I'm loving you here. ;D "I dunno? How stupid are you?" I think I kinda like this twist of the Losties being the jades old timers messing with the newbie island visitors. Yeah, they're sort of acting like The Others do, and the newbies are just as confused as the Losties were/are. Yes! It's like we see history repeating itself.

I cut off some of the best wikipedia part about Minkowskil It goes on to say that he was one of Einsteins teachers and .... "Minkowski realized that the special theory of relativity, introduced by Einstein in 1905 and based on previous work of Lorentz and Poincaré, could be best understood in a four dimensional space, since known as " Minkowski spacetime", in which the time and space are not separated entities but intermingled in a four dimensional space-time..." Could be applicable to Island space/time and the "real world" ... leftylady
