Emily's Big Adventure: Saturday, there were pro-Prop 8 protestors on every major intersection along Imperial Highway (our main drag) for several miles. For the record, Prop 8, if it passes, will change our state constitution to ban same-sex marriage. In other words, it'll be the first constitutional amendment to discriminate against a specific class of citizens. Which is, in my opinion, a Very Bad Thing. Anyway... Saturday afternoon, the pro-group had all gone home and had been replaced by No on Prop 8 protestors at the major intersection near our house. I happened to mention this to Emily, who decided to go have a look-see. She walked up, got to talking and discovered that one of the women was someone she knew from her self-defense class (who was surprised that Emily was old enough to vote). Emily then picked up a spare sign and joined the group. I'm so proud of her. So this afternoon she walked up and did it again, and came back bubbling about all the nice people, including the gay newlyweds who had been married today at a local liberal church (which they drive from LA to attend on Sundays), saw the protestors and decided to join them. Oh, to be so young and un-cynical about politics again... Anna's been doorbelling in Missoula, and will be phonebanking or knocking on doors tonight and tomorrow. Rachel Maddow quoted figures last night that one in sixty-seven people in Montna are volunteering for Obama; I'm not actually surprised. Julia, I was also pleased that the Governor of MT stated he was not interested in national office because his dog wouldn't like it.

I have to agree with the author when he says "I know this sounds nitpicky." Hee! "But she's the one who keeps bringing it up."

Hee! "But she's the one who keeps bringing it up." Yes. I admit. I read that line thru the spectacles of Scubie Wednesday. This has certainly gone in an unexpected direction . . . and we're days from Wednesday! I just meant that the article seemed very nitpicky to me, as the author seems to semi-realize. And the "let's pick Sarah to death" is (IMO) wearisome. So, Sarah suggested Obama would care more about the rights of terrorists than the victims . . . typical attack from the right, on the left (suggestion that they are bleeding hearts, heads-in-the-clouds, don't care about the every day person . . . the usual). Absolutely nothing new here, and the Dem team has used similar hyperbole on its side, when talking about McCain-Palin. I dunno. To me, the article was super (predictably and boringly) "nitpicky."* *Just to make it clear, this is a criticism, but it should not be confused with an attempt to infringe upon the author's First Amendment's rights to express himself. I will defend to the death his right to write as many nitpicky articles as he likes.

Barack Obama's grandmother has died. I just saw that- Congressman Norm Dicks' (WA6) mother died Saturday. Both deaths seem terribly unfair, really; Dick's mom was Magnuson's district office manager, and a major force in the Washington Democratic party for years. Madeline Dunbar lived such a hard-working virtuous life that you'd think she'd get the final punchline. Julia, proof again that Life has no plot.

In other news, with incredibly bad timing (karma?) the California GOP has filed a complaint about Obama using campaign money to fly home to visit his grandma.

Julia, ugh I guess, in their defense, they didn't know she'd died when they made the complaint. Doesn't make it a lot better. What's horrible, though, are the right-wing blogs (see Fox News, if you think you can stomach it) with posters saying BO killed his own grandmother to get sympathy votes.

ETA: I started reading through the comments, and it's actually a lot better than I expected. I'm trying to figure out the appeal of Fox News, cause it doesn't appear to be just the ultra right wing people who watch. I'll have to ask my parents the next time I visit them.

A lot more Reps defending him than usual. For obvious reasons. I hear the comments at Freeper are a whole lot worse, but I don't go there....

The crazies really came out this election. I'm very sorry to hear his grandmother died. It's never easy to lose a grandparent.
