I don't think the man on the inside is Boyd, because if it were, he wouldn't be making waves like he is.
I actually thought the fight scenes were distinctly not like the ones in Buffy and Angel.
The over 20 Dollhouses thing made me think of SD 6 and the 14 thing on Alias than Wolf Ram and Hart, actually. But secret far flung uppercrust conspiracy organization is a *really* common theme.
Oh, and the fight in Ballard's? Mellie's? apartment was a lot like the one in the Alias season 2 finale.

I really do think that the pilot would have been loads better with this documentary stuff. Cause it talks about the things that people think about when they hear the premise. So when the audience sees that, they're like "Just what I was thinking!" and then they've bought into the show. **nods** I think the show was hurt somewhat by not letting Joss do all that he wanted right away.

I finally gave up waiting for Himself to find time, and watched this episode by myself. Elder Daughter walked in right in the middle and I had to stop and suggest she put on headphones if she was going to use the computer because I was not going to stop watching my show. The one time she decides to come home from school three hours early... But I got through it. Also, ad for Fringe! Squeeee! Well, that certainly complicated things. But in a good, fair, layered Joss-ish kind of way. I knew the nice girl next door was an active, I knew it. And now that I've started reading through this thread, no, I didn't know about the previous casting, it just seemed a logical plot twist. Karen, I agree, internet guy is slime. Once, he could try to "show his wife the new house", for closure. I'd still think he was creepy. But every year with a different doll? That's just disgusting. The handler who was abusing Sierra? Can I despine him? Or flay him? I do a great flay... Please please please?I almost admire the woman running this Dollhouse - she's trying to do right by her charges. She's still totally evil, though. Joss sure does have a dark depressing mind these days. This is never going to be a show I look forward to, but at least it's worth the watching. Please, flay away. I'm getting the idea that Joss's interest was peaked by the April bot and the idea has been percolating since them and now he has a chance to really delve into this topic. Ooooooh, I hadn't thought of that. It would make sense, I mean think about how many of us were emotionally captured by her final moments as her battery ran down.

Loved the review, Erin.
Good to remind us to think about what the purpose of the Dollhouse might be. Does Echo's question to Ballard mean that Caroline understands, or was Echo programmed to ask the question?

Does Echo's question to Ballard mean that Caroline understands, or was Echo programmed to ask the question? Thanks, sweetie! You know, I think it's difficult to separate. That seems to be what they are exploring in Season 2; what can really be programmed, and what can't?

Erin! I love how you found the pattern in this ep! "Fantasy, fairy tale, pretend, game" - repeated in word and plot.
Excellent points made in this review, such as the idea that even as Harne's character is horrible, his "claim that the Dollhouse is 'in the business of using people' is on the mark".
But most particularly I liked how you drove back to the key of the episode (and really the series), the purpose of the Dollhouse - linking Ninja!Echo's instructions to Paul and the final interview.
So, are you also going to review Epitaph, even tho' it didn't air? I'd love to read what you thought of it!

Which really makes me wonder about her and Ballard's new plan to destroy the Dollhouse. Is this following thru with the plans from whatever group sent Echo to Ballard last season or is this new/in place of/in additon to, eh?

Very Serenity-like in that respect.
