Hey all, I went up to visit with Jan and Rich today. I'm sure Rich will provide a more detailed update for you, but it appears the surgery went fine yesterday. Jan's room, which she has all to herself, was about as nice as they get, and the staffers I interacted with all seemed very kind, thoughtful, and professional. It's clear that the cutest couple in America has thoroughly won them over already. Angelique and Jason were visiting for the weekend, and Angelique made Jan an absolutely gorgeous shawl--I was completely in awe of her skills. Rich modeled it for Jan and, lucky for us, Angelique captured the moment on her digital camera. It looked pretty good on him, but even better on its intended recipient. ;D Right now I'm hoping to go back up there next Sunday, weather and other circumstances permitting.

I wish I lived closer, but am comforted by the thought that you are there for her. Give her a hug from me next time you see her. She, Rich and her family are constantly in my thoughts.

Hey, Jan - I know it's sort of a stupid question, but - how are you doing? Jan hasn't been able to use a computer for a while now. She is on some pretty powerful drugs and drifts in and out of present time. She made it through the surgery Saturday, though the first hours after surgery were pretty rough. Today, though, she was in much less pain and her appetite seems to be coming back. It was really great seeing Sara yesterday and I know from her smile that Jan felt touched as well. Sara's post was, as always, fair and accurate. Expect to see a humiliating photo of me a beautiful shawl posted by Angelique in the next 24 hours. Jan's friends were in and out of her room all day yesterday, bringing positive energy and good cheer. Sunday night was like a party. Our friends and loved ones surrounding her bed, offering prayers, love and encouragement. Our friend Adelit brought his two a half year old son Joseph. Jan smiled to see him. There were jokes and swapping of stories. Jan drank it all in. She is aware and can hear people, but it is hard for her to talk. Nevertheless, she would speak occasionally, snarking and joking with people whenever she could. Today we continue to work on finding ways to reduce Jan's pain, though our options are getting more limited. Tomorrow they will be moving her to an extended care facility near the hospital and begin administering hospice care. Know that we feel your love and support.

Ah - I thought she might have been able to be here for a few minutes because she was on the front page as logged in.
