Who here has read "Swallows and Amazons?" A woman at my church retreat was horrified that I (and others) had never heard of it. Well, it is British. I've actually read it and wrote a paper on it when I was taking a grad course in modernist children's lit at University of Chicago. It's interesting; I think you'd like it. And if I'm not mistaken, I think Anne's daughters have read it and loved it. Am I wrong, Anne?

Who here has read "Swallows and Amazons?" A woman at my church retreat was horrified that I (and others) had never heard of it. Me! Me! When I was a child, and at regular intervals thereafter, and to and with the daughters when they were younger. Paul read them as an adult, and he still loves them. I highly recommend the series, to children and adults alike - the girls are just as much adventurers as the boys, and the grownups aren't far behind. Swallows and Amazons synopsisRansome has such a good sense of children and how they think - Ruth is called Nancy because she and her sister Peggy are Amazon pirates, and her uncle (aka Captain Flint) told her that pirates are ruthless, therefore... Sorry, burbling. But I do love the books dearly. Thanks Anne. I had a vague impression that maybe I had heard it mentioned here way back when we were collecting ideas for children's reading. You sound like Nina did. I'm sorry I was unaware when my kids were little. Also, thanks to Erin. I've got the first one requested from the library. [Although it looks like budget cuts are going to make the schedule even worse than it is now for the branch libraries: no Sundays, no Fridays, the other 5 days are either 9-5 or noon to 8, alternately. Not terribly user-friendly.

Thanks for the welcoming everyone! I had a little trouble with my account, and had to delete it and register again, but it should be solved now. And I have to remind myself not to read so carefully the next time your discussing Project Runway (since the latest season hasn't come to Swedish television yet) and try to avoid direct spoilers, which I'm usually excellent in finding accidentally and not forgetting about no matter how hard I try. (And that was by now way I try for me to stop you from discussing it, just to make sure there are no misunderstandings.) Hi, again! And you'll note that one of our wonderful Arch-Technopagans has managed to link up your first post to your current account, so you still have two posts....

Hey S'cubies, I figured I should let y'all know that, as some of you guessed, I was the one responsible for yesterday's April Fool's prank. It wasn't premeditated or anything like that: just a moment of pure whimsy in which, as Caroline on Bones put it, my puckish side would not be denied. It was only after I finally got back to my desk about 4 hours later that I realized there'd been a completely unintended side effect—namely that any link with the word "Spike" in it automatically got altered as well. It honestly never even crossed my mind that the change I implemented would affect anything other than the thread names and such, although once I saw what happened it seemed so obvious I sat here banging my head on my desk for a few minutes after I set things right again. Anyway, all I was trying to do was provide a chuckle or two, not be mean or malicious or anything like that. So I do sincerely regret any headaches or panic it caused—that was certainly not my intent, and I fixed it as soon as I realized what had taken place. If there is a next time, I promise I'll be more careful about making sure I haven't overlooked any of the possible ramifications. Sara

Sara *Tries hard to suppress his chuckling* Welcome to the "Good Intentions Always Bite You In The Ass Club"! I did this same thing eons ago (like maybe 2005?) and it had alllll sorts of unintended ramifications. But it was fun! The S'cubie tradition lives on! Oh, and happy belated April Fool's Day. This year we did not get a cease and desist order from Atty. April Ruse. Thank God! And for those of you that celebrate such things, Happy Good Friday! Vlad

Little do you know it, but you have jsut taken a step that has the potential to change the course of your life. Once, we were all like you, then we opened our mouths around the rest of the yahoos that now make up this board. We've shared joy, love, loss, heartache. You'll find that it influences all your thoughts and actions... nearly every waking moment will be spent doing something board related and if not actively doing something, then thinking about it, planning for it, fretting about it. Was I smart enough? Funny enough? Outrageous enough? Did I punctuate correctly? Will they still like me? Is it okay to dislike Apple and if I do, will Rachael and Julia still tolerate me? Okay, maybe that is all jsut me. Others seem to have adjusted jsut fine. Seriously... well, not seriously, but genuinely, welcome a-Board! Vlad

Vlad I've already managed to obsess quite much about my replys here, and that will probably continue for a while, hopefully I'll get use to it in not too much time, and become as attached to this board as you are. Know the feeling though, since I'm a part of a Swedish Harry Potter-RPG online, which definitely has had huge influences on my life.

Wow.
Did I mention that not only did I get a lovely, light, 360-degree wheely suitcase for my birthday, but a 15-inch MACBOOK? I felt guilty about all that money spent and Mom said: "Why do you think I was teaching the cooking classes?"
She'll get hers, though. I'm saving up to buy her a desktop Mac for HER birthday. Mwah ha ha!

Maya's interview is upNot that it will still the controversey. I do think what she says about her working style being unsuited to a reality show is key- if you're the kind of person who works best by being thoughtful and solitary and doing a lot of preliminary work, one-day challenges are going to be both stressful and frustrating. Julia, hooray for people who work well under pressure; now if they'd only stop thinking that not being able to do so on a sustained basis is some sort of universal and unquestionable virtue

Vlad I confess I spent awhile wondering if a new young Swedish babe joining us on April Fools Day was going to end up being some kind of prank from the Vladster. But looks like we are in luck, and Evanna is for real! And yes, Evanna - as Vlad said, we've been through a lot together. I consider this place like a little go-to place and a safety net AND a place to talk about Buffy-stuff and entertainment stuff in general, etc. I hope you will enjoy being a member.
