I have always thought that Maya was extremely mature for her 21 years. Many of the college students that I work around typically don't display that kind of quiet confidence. But after last night's episode, I have to rethink everything about her. She was apparently having a major crisis of confidence, but wasn't sharing a word of it with anyone. Not even Mila, her lone room mate. This is a girl who keeps things to herself, and sometimes that isn't necessarily a good thing. She threw away a major opportunity to show in Bryant Park, imo. She's made a horrifically bad mistake. Even if she'd been auf'd this same week, she's had her designs shown on national TV and proved she could stand up to the other designers as far as construction and creativity go. But remember Christian Siriano from a few years back? He was the same age that Maya is now, and he WON. He's a major name now. I realize he had the same crisis of insecurity that she's experienced, but he plowed ahead anyway and it paid off. I've lost all respect for Maya. I think that in running away (what ELSE would you call it?) she's shown tremendous immaturity and lack of responsibility. Who would hire a designer for who might quit just because things got stressful? Moreover, I think that where Christian's become famous, Maya's condemned herself to a lifetime of obscurity. And wouldn't it be the bitingest of ironies if Anthony--who got to come back through Maya's leaving--managed to win the competition? The Project Rungay boys are going to post an interview with Maya soon, so hopefully this will shed some light on her decision. There may be something else going on that we don't know about, I suppose. Your comment about who would hire a designer who might quit because things got stressful is interesting, because I don't recall ever seeing her overly stressed--not more than any of the other designers anyway. That is what is so confusing about her decision.

I love that Colbert is doing a food segment now on his show.
Is anybody watching Jamie Oliver's Food Revolution? I'm not watching it, because I'm not watching any television, but I've heard a lot about it. The clip that Colbert showed was really interesting.

That is what is so confusing about her decision. We don't know a whole lot- we don't know if, for instance, she had reached her physical limit and was running on caffiene and anxiety. We don't know how much energy she was burning putting up with Mila, who was all kinds of creepy in her interactions with Maya. We don't kow if that last challenge, producing good work outside her skill set, used up everything she had left creatively (it happens. See Julia, 1978, dropping out of grad school). It's not always possible to buckle down and do the work: I have as much respect for people who recognize when they've reached their breaking point and quit before they break as for those who are lucky or emotionally/mentally break resistant. And I'd do quite a lot, if I were Maya, never to have a face like Mila's at rest: Cruella de Ville with better moisturizing. Julia, living with Mila would make me want to do damage to someone, her by preferencebut myself if necessary

But unless there was some family emergency or she had some kind of heallth issue I still think she made a mistake that will haunt her for quite a while. There were only a few weeks left to the show! There was enough space left by the departed auf'd for her to go to more congenial digs. Mila creeps me out too.

(So when I see Cookie Monster eating his carrots and veggies and cookies I can imagine her just off-screen.)

But either way, it doesn't have to doom her - she's very young and talented. It will take effort, but she can come back from this. It's all up to her.

Who here has read "Swallows and Amazons?" A woman at my church retreat was horrified that I (and others) had never heard of it. Me! Me! When I was a child, and at regular intervals thereafter, and to and with the daughters when they were younger. Paul read them as an adult, and he still loves them. I highly recommend the series, to children and adults alike - the girls are just as much adventurers as the boys, and the grownups aren't far behind. Swallows and Amazons synopsisRansome has such a good sense of children and how they think - Ruth is called Nancy because she and her sister Peggy are Amazon pirates, and her uncle (aka Captain Flint) told her that pirates are ruthless, therefore... Sorry, burbling. But I do love the books dearly.
