Allison emailed from Versailles (the town, but inview of the castle). I believe her exact words said something about "sitting with Margaret.....Daddy, I was NOT kidnapped by Albanian pirates...." In a few days they go on to London, then Dublin, then Edinbourgh (sp?). I've (almost) run out of things to say about Nashville. Sunday -- wettest day in history (130 years anyway). Saturday = 3rd wettest day in history. We've had more ran now than the averager for May/June/July. Me: I've vacuumed, run the DW, returned stuff to 3 stores and had the oil changed in the girls' car ------ if ONLY I had mornings like that in my own home. Cab comes in one hour to take me to the airport. Not such a bad thing that Jim has to pick me up at 4:30 (hours before he would normally leave work) because both his suitcases (containing work stuff) are supposed to be at the airport by then and for sure they aren't getting delivered to homes. Best story I've heard is aobaut Mike Siedel and Cantore being evacuated at 2 am from a downtown hotel. Also, the took 1500 people from the ritzy Opryland Hotel and used school buses to take them to a shelter at a local high school. (Opryland sits directly on the Cumberland.) My other Nashville friend says his power's out. Have you heard about outages and whether they are getting power back to those people? The stories coming out of there remind me of Houston in the wake of Hurricane Ike. From an email I sent to family. Tried to post it last night but internet blinked out: My plane was on time -- airport was FULL of people. Jim's luggage was there as well. Interstate was empty. House and yard in excellent shape. One major new gully in the middle of new landscaping in side yard, but we'll get that fixed up eventually. So many people in horribly bad shape. I got a bit of the "bird's eye" view from the plane. The thing is that although a lot of the standing water has receded from parking lots and roads the Cheatham County dam is overflowing over the top and the Cumberland keeps rising. Since Jim got home this morning downtown has slowly flooded from Riverfront Park, over First Ave, then 2nd, then 3rd. 15 feet of water in the basement (practice rooms) at the Symphony Center; the Bridgestone Arena. Here are just a dozen of pictures of downtown: www.cmt.com/pictures/2010-nashville-flood/1638334/4835265/photo.jhtmlAnd crest is not expected until later tonight. Bellevue is very hard hit with water submerging neighborhoods. Brownlee (the street at the bottom of Pennywell hill has a 20 foot span that is unpassable -- apparently instead of flowing over the road, water got under it and pushed the asphalt up and out (Tom -- just past the Brownlee/Windrow interesection). The church has no electricity and several members are still in shelters. Schools still closed. 56 has at least minor wind and water damage. 6 are in bad shape. Only one functioning water plant and volunteers are busy sandbagging it until the water crests so everyone has been asked to cut water consumption in half. It's going to be a very long, hard clean-up with lots of families having VERY difficult times (no flood insurance) and the small businesses on lower Broadway in for a tough time. 19 dead statewide, 10! of those deaths in Nashville (only 1 died when tornado hit 13 years ago). 2 bodies discovered yesterday as waters receded. Diane, - less than 2500 out of electricity at this point. I'm sure NES is working on it. But in some areas they can't get to lines due to water issues. And you can't turn on electricity in houses where circuit box is underwater.

On a more fun note we've had these 2 emails from Allison:
>Currently sitting on a French bed with Catie and Margaret in a >> >beautiful house (the family where Margaret studied abroad junior year) >> >in Versailles, walking distance from the Château de Versailles (Louis >> >XIV, XV, XVI; Hall of Mirrors). Saw the Eiffel Tower from >> >afar....FRANCE! >> > >> >Daddy, I did not get kidnapped by Albanians. Or Russians. >> > >> >Love, >> >Allie
=======================================
I think Paris is pretty sweet--very old big buildings. We went on a bus tour today with free passes from Catie's study abroad program so we saw so so much and then walked so so much and I am dead because of jet lag on top of that. We didn't go in, but saw the Louvre, Eiffel Tower, L'Arc de Triomph, Notre Dame, Opera House, Seine, Pont Neuf, French people, swanky hot chocolate, Latin Quarter, Lebanese food dinner, Margaret's host family's really nice house in Versailles....buses, trains, metros, lots of those. It was a good day. Really long.
Taking lots of pictures and videos! Will be fun to share if you are willing to watch...

Diane! Awesome avatar! Do you have some sort of beef with Mischa Barton? I gotta say, the original image is one of the best photo manips I've ever seen. And I can say that with some authority, as I've studied the picture very, very, very closely. ;D

Downtown Nashville has lost all power due to underground circuit breakers being tripped. This includes huge business buildings and several hotels. Nashville Electric Service predicts that they cannot get underground to access the situation until at least Friday. So there are people who got evacuated from Opryland Hotel and are now 20 floors up with no air or electricity or elevators. YUCK!

Actually awake- for quite a while, now that I check the clock. Too much to do, all told, stupid dayishness of this day.
Julia, also the overwhelming weekishness of this week.

Me= Love it! The weather is gorgeous, for once. I really need to be home mowing my lawn. The dandelions are plotting to take over, like highly sentient militants. Every time I look out my back window, they seem to be advancing just a leetle bit closer to my house. Eep.

I don't have to worry about the lawn, but I really need to do some housecleaning sometime soon. Where's a house elf when you need one?

Glad you asked. I meant to ask but forgot - I had the same feeling . . . where have I seen that kid? I see the file is named "Manny," but that doesn't do the trick for me. It's Manny from the show Modern Family. For me, one of the most laugh-out-loud comedies on TV right now. Manny is a sweetie with an old soul. I just love him. Thanks for asking, Erin & Spring!! I just read an article about that show...about the iPad and the show, actually. I've not seen it. Speaking of product placement (well, nobody was but me, sorry), on rewatching some of the Bones episodes, DAMN, that show has a lot of product placement. And clumsy as hell product placement to boot. There's one where the bones are disintegrating where it is really really bad; I mean, Jenny McCarthy touting the awesomeness of a particular car? Yowza. I don't mean to pick on the show...but wow.
