LOLA!Monnie just tweeted that her first flight has run into mechanical problems and they've all been taken off the plane. So she might miss her connecting flight in Denver. So - she was tweeting from Huntsville, still in the airport, there? Well - this stuff happens. Monnie will do great. I'm glad she's getting all this experience before we attempt to go to Europe together.

I'm in San Diego! Long story about the first leg of my plane flights that I'll go into later when I'm not on my phone. But I'm here at the airport and waiting for Lola to deplane. I see palm trees!

Also? Love the fact that I can post from my iPod. Oh, technology. How I love and hate you.
Eta: the hate is time suckage and how I almost deleted the thread posting this.

I will let you know, for sure! I love that museum. So beautiful. Did you decide to go to the Ann Arbor Art Fair? Today is the first day, and probably the best, weather-wise.

#wavey# you know how there are some days that go to plan and other days that laugh at your plan with a whole diabolical MWAH HAH HAAAA thing going on? ... yeah. (computer shop phoned to ask if I was sure I didn't have a copy of the stuff I asked them to copy back onto my computer. I said I had a copy marked 'incomplete'. no I didn't know what was missing. is why I got them to do a backup.) (I don't know if it's anything important at all at all. I do know they said they'd make sure all my stuff was still on my hard drive.)

I haz problem. My sister (okay, HALF sister) is getting married in September. She has blocked off hotel rooms for guests and done the, y'know, usual stuff. Thing is, I can't really afford to go. The cheapest flight to Portland, ME from Houston is $297.00. That doesn't include all the taxes, fees, extras and whatever that will boost the final cost to $330 or so. It also means at least one plane change since there are NO direct flights from here to there. I talked to my daughter Beth and she suggested maybe we could fly into Boston and take the bus to Portland. However, although we CAN get a direct flight, once you add the cost of the bus ticket--and the transfer from plane to bus, AND the two and a half hour ride from Boston to Portland. Really, you save nothing. I also talked to Beth about driving. This is fine for her. She's used to long car trips and is a healthy, young, fit 40. For my 60+ bad-backed self the idea of spending 30 hours in a car is not quite as appealing even if the countryside along the way does prove to be worth it--and even if my daughter and I don't end up killing each other. So it's back to Plan A. Then I thought about the additional costs, like the cost of the room, which--even if I split it with Beth (who also can't really afford to go either) will certainly come to at least $75 a day for a minimum of 3 days (i.e., day before, day of and day after). Now, I also don't have something nice enough to wear. A decent dress in my (plus) size isn't going to come my way for less than $100. There will have to be shoes, another $50-100 if they're going to fit my wide, wide feet and not torture me. And lastly, there's a gift. This is my half-sister, so I can't be a piker. Figure another $100? $200? More? People, we're talking at least $800 - $1,000 or more! And that doesn't consider any extras that might come up. This wouldn't have been an issue before my daughter's business disaster, but now it's 1/5 of what's left of my emergency fund. It also means that I won't be able to afford to have a vacation of my own this year. Meaning, getting to go someplace I want to go as opposed to someplace I'm obliged to go. Add to that the fact that the wedding is set for September 5, over Labor Day weekend! That means in addition to giving up my long weekend I will have to deal with the impossibility of airports during holidays--for multi-stop flights and plane changes remember? You know what? I'd REALLY rather divide the amount in half, buy her a spectacular present and stay home.

Good morning! Life seems to be getting in the way of my fun. What's up with that? Monnie and Lola! Can't wait to have some virtual fun through your con adventure! It's a typical humid, warm and cloudy midwest summer day. 93 for a high. All I need is an ocean within 10 miles. Is that really too much to ask? Hugs to everyone!

Just went to get a caffeine infusion—aka a large iced coffee, light and sweet. As I walked up to the counter (there wasn't anyone in line), the woman there was telling her coworker "light and sweet." I don't know whether to be amused or chagrinned.

Some of the first pics I've taken here so farLet me know how the link works for ya'll. It's the first time I've used Snapfish or done a slideshow. Should have lots more photos of the actual con the rest of the weekend. Man, it's been crazy so far. I'm convinced I unknowingly sold my soul to a demon at some point--we've had lots of lucky breaks. *knocks on wood that this doesn't mean we'll have shitty luck the rest of the con*
