Some of the first pics I've taken here so farLet me know how the link works for ya'll. It's the first time I've used Snapfish or done a slideshow. Should have lots more photos of the actual con the rest of the weekend. Man, it's been crazy so far. I'm convinced I unknowingly sold my soul to a demon at some point--we've had lots of lucky breaks. *knocks on wood that this doesn't mean we'll have shitty luck the rest of the con* It doesn't work on my job, I'll have to check again when I get home.

LOLA!Monnie just tweeted that her first flight has run into mechanical problems and they've all been taken off the plane. So she might miss her connecting flight in Denver. SARA!! OMG, they boarded them and then unboarded them and then reboarded them! And she had to run thru airports! (But not jump over luggage.) But she made it, safe and sound. And we are at Comic Con! And it is awesome and terrifying and fabulous and OMG - so huge! SO HUGE!!!!!! HUGE!!

I haz problem. My sister (okay, HALF sister) is getting married in September. She has blocked off hotel rooms for guests and done the, y'know, usual stuff. Thing is, I can't really afford to go. The cheapest flight to Portland, ME from Houston is $297.00. That doesn't include all the taxes, fees, extras and whatever that will boost the final cost to $330 or so. It also means at least one plane change since there are NO direct flights from here to there. I talked to my daughter Beth and she suggested maybe we could fly into Boston and take the bus to Portland. However, although we CAN get a direct flight, once you add the cost of the bus ticket--and the transfer from plane to bus, AND the two and a half hour ride from Boston to Portland. Really, you save nothing. I also talked to Beth about driving. This is fine for her. She's used to long car trips and is a healthy, young, fit 40. For my 60+ bad-backed self the idea of spending 30 hours in a car is not quite as appealing even if the countryside along the way does prove to be worth it--and even if my daughter and I don't end up killing each other. So it's back to Plan A. Then I thought about the additional costs, like the cost of the room, which--even if I split it with Beth (who also can't really afford to go either) will certainly come to at least $75 a day for a minimum of 3 days (i.e., day before, day of and day after). Now, I also don't have something nice enough to wear. A decent dress in my (plus) size isn't going to come my way for less than $100. There will have to be shoes, another $50-100 if they're going to fit my wide, wide feet and not torture me. And lastly, there's a gift. This is my half-sister, so I can't be a piker. Figure another $100? $200? More? People, we're talking at least $800 - $1,000 or more! And that doesn't consider any extras that might come up. This wouldn't have been an issue before my daughter's business disaster, but now it's 1/5 of what's left of my emergency fund. It also means that I won't be able to afford to have a vacation of my own this year. Meaning, getting to go someplace I want to go as opposed to someplace I'm obliged to go. Add to that the fact that the wedding is set for September 5, over Labor Day weekend! That means in addition to giving up my long weekend I will have to deal with the impossibility of airports during holidays--for multi-stop flights and plane changes remember? You know what? I'd REALLY rather divide the amount in half, buy her a spectacular present and stay home. Yup, nice gift, but staying home sounds like the best choice to me.

Just went to get a caffeine infusion—aka a large iced coffee, light and sweet. As I walked up to the counter (there wasn't anyone in line), the woman there was telling her coworker "light and sweet." I don't know whether to be amused or chagrinned. I think it's pretty cool, actually! I'm the same way--I think the woman at Subway could put my sandwich together with her eyes closed.

It is entirely possible that this is a result of Franklin's favored package of antivirus utilities, since Anna was complaining about similar issues night before last. Julia,

Use your recent surgery as a weapon, for once. Julia, trying to figure out how to say politely that I am not up to the drive to Lake Chelan, nor most particularly the whacked eating schedule while there. To my husband, which cuts down on the exagerations and editing or reality part.

We had one twenty-minute transfer, one end to the other once (I think that was flying into Austin) and you can really ZOOM in Denver! Julia, ignoring the annoying cat, who would not go out when I had the door open and is now throwing a complete snittification.

We just finished watching our last two Tennant Dr Whos, and are very depressed indeed ("Water of Mars" ). I may post something after I've thought about it, but right now I'm just too sad and disturbed. By the by, does anyS'cubie have a recorded copy of "End of Time" we could borrow? I know, I could download them, but downloading things gives me the wiggins, not to mention that watching anything more than five minutes long on Hodgman is uncomfortable to say the least, and impossible for more than one person. Anyway, BBCA is going into Eccleston starting this afternoon. I've seen that season, but I'm going to DVR them for Kitty.

For Julia and possibly Sara:
Top 10: Jamie Moyer is so old that …
• 10. "… the first park he pitched in was Jurassic Park." -- Brian V., Pleasantville, N.J.
• 9. "… he owes Jesus a dollar." -- Galen P., San Francisco
• 8. "… John Hancock was at one of his games and asked for his 'Jamie Moyer.'" -- Matt G., Fort Wayne, Ind.
• 7. "… he should be in the Hall of Fame because he helped build it." -- Andrew N., Phoenix
• 6. "… when he was in school they didn't call it 'history,' they called it 'current events.'" -- Scott C., Seattle.
• 5. "… when he made his big league debut, the Dead Sea was only sick." -- Chris G., La Crosse, Wis., and Matt C., Colorado Springs, Colo.
(Editor's note: We're pretty sure the "Dead Sea was only sick" joke has been around longer than, well, Jamie Moyer, but we like it.)
(Rachael's note: the "current events" joke is also older than Jamie.)
• 4. "… his high school text books referred to the Civil War as 'rough patch ahead.'" -- Matt C., Charlotte, N.C.
• 3. "… he intentionally walked Adam in order to pitch to Eve." -- Sean M., Woodbridge, N.J.
• 2. "… he is only eligible for the 'Cy Elderly' Award." -- Tom K., Memphis, Tenn.
• 1. "… when he was born, dirt was new." -- Jamie M., currently Philadelphia.

Just be very positive and upbeat about it, sending profuse apologies and many, many good wishes along with a spectacular present, and explain in a simple, brief manner - "I definitely would love to be there if I could, but the long trip isn't doable for me right now." Could you get away with that, or would you get pressured and pressed for an detailed explanation?
