Monnie -- congrats on the White Christmas (oddly, Carolyn is less thrilled. You would think she saw snow every day. ) Liz -- I'm sure the natives are telling you how rare it is. Diane -- in time for your roadtrip! Anne -- no kids up here yet, but Jim has been up for more than 2 hours and will probably start making noise. He is the biggest kid of all. Random --- movies we've watched in the past few days: ELF -- a holiday favorite of Allison's bits of Wonderful Life, Miracle on 34th Street, White Christmas (because except for the Closer Christmas episodes marathon I think TNT has had those 3 movies in rotation for a week now -- or may it's AMC) To Kill A Mockingbird (Gus has to read it for school) Babes in Toyland -- the Drew Barrymore, Keanu Reeves version which my kids LOVED back in the day.

Merry Christmas! Snowing like crazy here. Only the 10th Christmas since records began (1888) with measurable snow. Gorgeous. (About an inch but the last instances was 3 tenths of an inch in 1993.) Merry Christmas, Everyone! Glad to spread the snowy joy to all the southern (well, not Pixi or Matthew, I hope!) S'cubies! ;D I think it's a good omen for 2011. (not to jinx it or anything by voicing my opinion out loud : But yes - Good Omen! We need one of those every 10 years or so. Love you guys. You are one of the brightest spots in my every day! For the boys (and girls): A good manip: And for us Spike lovers:

OK, Phase One is out of the way: Anna and I opened our presents to each other: mutual too-expensive socks, plus, in the me-to-her case, two nice Cuisinart spatulas because after Christmas we're going sewing machine shopping, and in the her-to-me not one but two Seskas! A four inch Seska as Cardassian from that awful interegnum when Paramount lost the plot on action figures, and a six inch (my preferred collectable size) Federation Uniform Seska.
Oh, and a pair of emerald earrings (Thai made, light old mine emeralds and diamond chips on vermeil hoops, which I picked out and put on my Amazon list on the "most bang for the buck" principle) and three calendars (Carl Larssen for the kitchen, Barn Owls for the front door, and William Morris for the study).
And the Summer's Family Album action figure set with Buffy, Joyce and Dawn in proper relative sizes, and the mask of which Giles said "See my mask? Isn't it pretty? It brings the dead back to life!"
Julia, I'm worried about that last part

The sun is shining through the cloud cover. It's so bright. Its heat is slowly melting the snow, and it looks like the trees and houses have been blown with fake Hollywood snow. Very beautiful, in a fake-real kind of way. After I get this pie in the oven, I'm going to take a walk and try to get a few good photos. Hope everyone's holiday is going well.

I survived. It wasn't half bad - my mom behaved herself, although it's worrying how frail she is right now; the caregiver (nice lady also from Belize, like Yolanda and her daughter and Benny) took her around the house in the wheelchair, and she fell asleep twice. But she was otherwise fairly alert, although her hearing isn't what it was, and she ate a good lunch. The only mention of Ratbag and not-quite-as-useless BiL was to remark that she hadn't heard from them either. We brought home two boxes and a bag of books to get rid of for her, and moved some other boxes out of the way of the video drawers. The books from the boxes are currently on the front porch, sealed into a couple of big plastic garbage bags with silverfish baits, because when I opened one of them three silverfish came out, ewwwww. The Husband apologised this morning because he hadn't really got me any gifts; he did, however, get the little red half-quart thermos I'd seen at Borders and suggested I'd like. He also went to Michaels yesterday in search of something I'd mentioned wanting eventually, and when he couldn't quite remember what it was, he got me a gift card so I could buy it myself. So that's an improvement. We also each got $100 in mad money; part of mine will probably go for new walking shoes and I may just blow the rest on Lantern Moon storage thingies for my knitting and crochet supplies. Elder Daughter bought us all little things from Cost Plus. My cousin sent me two placemats with Frida collages and a Frida ornament made from a tart pan, created by two of the members of her Salon Des Artes, and Daria outdid herself - she decided that this year Christmas/Winter Solstice would be All About Me, so she gave me an Old English Tarot Deck, a rune pendant and a tarot card pendant, and a little package-opener knife and some thumbtacks with hedgehogs on. She also gave the family a couple of ornament photo frames, with the idea that the girls could each put one of their art photos in them. But I'm very tired and achy, and looking forward to a glass of wine and the Dr Who Christmas special later, before I fall over.

In case anybody wants more food porn: -pumpkin pancakes with sour cream and jam and hot apple cider for breakfast this morning -rosemary lemon crock pot chicken, stuffing, colcannon, peas and onions, cranberry sauce, and egg nog for dinner, and of course, mint chocolate chip ice cream pie for dessert -also, I made buckeyes.
I'd never cooked a whole chicken before, so that was a new experience. The crockpot worked really well, though the whole thing was falling apart when I fished it out, so perhaps I didn't need to cook it quite as long as I did. Next time I'll try cooking it in the oven.
I got money from my parents to buy new shoes and clothes that I'll need for rotations, which is much appreciated.
My Uncle got me a magazine subscription to Wyoming's Nature Conservancy, which is awesome. He always comes up with the most creative gifts that no one else would ever have thought of.
James and I are being entire lame in not giving anyone presents at the moment due to brokeness.
I pretty much spent the day doing what I've been doing for the rest of the break reading and sorting through my belonging for trash and donations. I've also been alternating rewatching Lost and rewatching Farscape. Lost holds up even better on rewatching. There's also more similarities between the 2 shows than I realized.
