Liz -- How old are each of the cats? Do you want to find them a new permanent home or are you hoping to get them back after the 2 years of displacement/vagabondry that is residency? I have a sister in Knoxville. She has 4 dogs and I'll ask her to ask around but wanted more details. Yuri is 5, Val is 1ish. Ideally, I'm looking for some one to take care of them during my 3rd and 4th year only. After I graduate, I'll be able to settle down and get an apartment wherever I do my residency, so I'll be able to take them back then. But of course 2 years is a long time, and I have to accept the fact that Yuri and Val might be too attached to wherever they are and it would be too disruptive to remove them. That would be the only reason it would become permanent. Thank you so much for asking your sister for me.

Cats, in general, form stronger attachments to their first human than any subsequent servants. It's one of those things which makes them look smart. I'd tell you a long story about my old mama cat, Fang, whose original name was Anges: the short version is I was the only one allowed to hold and pet her, and the only one she'd come to without being called, even after she'd had a long and distinguised career as an exterminator cat for every new rental a bunch of us cousins had from the late sixties until the mid eighties. Julia, but they are happy with anyone who feeds them and scratches their ears, they just tend to be more bossy with subsequent people

Last night, I went outside to sweep the walk and got treated to quite the surprise. Suddenly vast amounts of super fine snow came pouring down with a very loud hiss. Then everything was lit up by bright flashes of lightning! There was thunder and lightning every few minutes for the next hour. In my 20+ years in Vermont I've never seen anything like it. I learned from the news today that apparently its a very rare weather phenomenon called "Thundersnow".

I had he contractor over to look over Vince's domain, upstairs - so that the work to overhaul the area into a place for a foster child can begin. He came over this morning. It kinda took a lot out of me. I really need to get the work done, but - well, Vince had truly made that upstairs his own - everything from the drawings and writings on the wall, to the holes in the wall, to the ceiling fan innards pulled and hanging down (I think he sometimes thought the room was bugged), the pennies I collected up there - it's all going to change. There are two bedrooms up there, and I want the space changed into one bedroom with a small bathroom. Oh, man. I will be happy to get it done, and I want to start on the fostering, but man - really getting started is sort of pulling my guts out at the same time. Just remember, that's only the space Vince used to inhabit...he lives on in your heart and you are only making that bigger to allow another to share it. That's a wonderful thing. Not many of us could do that. Well said.

Hope you are staying warm.

Lola posted some amazing "snow sculpture" pics, and I posted a note/poem of Vince's, over in the S'cubie Photo Album.

When I turned on the tv this afternoon, "I Believe You" was on - about partner violence (and the religious communities role in either helping or hurting the victims). It was hard to watch, but I am glad I did because it helped me cope with residual feelings of guilt I still have for leaving the ex, especially since my younger two decided to stay with him and he's really gone downhill fast the past couple of years - healthwise, etc. He was never abusive to them, which is good, but he still has his moments of craziness, which I know isn't easy for them to deal with at times. Anyway, good program.

We had thundersnow Tuesday night for about an hour, too, but it was in the middle of a 50 mph blizzard, so that kind of took the edge off the wonder.

I haven't even started clearing out Jan's room yet.

OK, guys.
I'm starting a new part...or rather, recycling, as I've got neither time nor brain to be creative right now.
Hold your hats.
