I have absolutely determined that there is not a sofa, settee, loveseat or chaise lounge in this town that I like, that fits in my tiny little living room, that also is not going to have to be immediatly upholstered (there was a settee at Pier 1, lovely thing, very comfortable, but it was a teal and burgundy paisley and would scream at my French blue and gold paisley drapes).
Life is not fair.
IKEA Thursday.
Julia, and somehow it will end up with longer legs.

I now work at a public library that has a much larger, and much different, patron base than where I used to work. Unfortunately, my job keeps me somewhat isolated in my office. I live in a nice apartment complex about half way between Denver and Boulder, so maybe I'll meet some people in the complex over time. It's a beautiful area and there are many things to do here, it's just a matter of meeting people so I don't have to do things by myself. I signed up for a martial arts class that starts next week, and I'm looking forward to that. I am also thinking about taking pottery classes; I have always wanted to know how to throw pottery. So things are starting to happen, but I tend to fall back on watching TV by way of habit. Good idea to take classes to get to know more people. I know you're not into organized religion, and neither am I (despite the Catholic upbringing and my methodist minister FIL and now SIL, I don't belong to a particular church). But you might consider joining the local Unitarian church - gives you the social benefits (which can be considerable) of church going, without the cost of feeling like a faker. When I first moved here, I remember someone trying to talk me into joining a particular church because she knew I was widowed with a small child, and she thought that church had the most eligible men for me. What a reason to join a church!!! OK, well now I've made it ALL ABOUT ME. Back to YOU . . . another thing that can help you get to know people is volunteer work of some kind. OK. That's all I got. I've thought about Unitarian--even checked into some local churches online, but...I don't know. There is a whole process where you have to sign a guest book, apply to be a member, pay dues (maybe 'dues' isn't the right word, but money is obviously expected) and it turns me off. It's probably not appropriate for me to go into here, and I'm likely being overly touchy about it. I'll have to mull that one over for awhile. But I feel the same way you do--should meeting someone REALLY be the reason to go to church? Probably not. I have seriously considered volunteer work; I just need to find something that feels right for me. I'll keep looking!

Thesis-induced crazy of the day: I've officially used the word "diegesis" so much in my work that I think I might accidentally name my first child that. Hmmm. A child named "that"? It has a certain ring to it.

Just finished my second original short fiction of the year so far. beccaelizabeth.dreamwidth.org/tag/originalsince that's two more than I managed to write in 2010 and equal to the whole of 2009 I figure I'm ahead on points. Not impressive on word count, and they're both just sketches to start a 'verse on, but is something. 2008 had six Torchwood fics, so that's my next target to beat. Given a few more months... Nice start. I like the imagery of the gel and the stars. Speaking of Torchwood, I finally saw the James Marsters episode on BBCA today. He returns, right? There was some awesome chemistry there...but there always is when JM is in the vicinity. I'm DVRing Scifi's version of "Being Human". I don't expect it to live up to the British version, but maybe I'll be surprised. I'm DVRing it too! Haven't made an effort to watch yet, though.

Take up golf...yeah, it's pricey, but public courses are not so bad, and you can always practice putting for free. You meet all sorts of interesting people on the course, and I've found that most of them are friendly or at least tolerate a woman on the golf course, if she makes an effort to learn the etiquette, takes lessons and picks up her ball if her play is too slow. Plus, there are bars at the clubs, usually, and lots of talk about your game, or lack there of afterwards. And when I come visit you in Denver, we can go golfing at a course that is probably in a gorgeous setting, with mountains and water.....sigh....I am jonesin' for some golf so bad! ETA: This course in Denver is awesome! And $25 in peak season for Twilight golf - after 4 or so - all you can golf? Dang. That is awesome, especially for such a great course!!!!!

Well, okay, it has a few REALLY suspenseful moments. But I'm not dropping any spoilers for you. Go look and then we'll talk. The werewolf is a cutie then? I didn't like any of the characters in the British version at first, but they all grew on me after a while. Thanks for not dropping spoilers. I'll try to watch tonight!

Julia, at this rate, the 5-6 week delivery period online looks doable.

It's called fellowship, and not being lonely is absolutely a reason to go to church; it's a way of giving other people a chance to practice the great commandment. I doubt you have to do any of those things which make you uncomfortable to go to church only to join and churches are not like clubs where you have to join to attend. Julia, there are people at St. Bennie's who have been visitors for decades (including us, since the diocese thinks we're still at St. John's).
