Welcome to the Soulful Spike Society Main Thread Part 1103. The cat is completely dead, but we're still here. If you're curious about a show, or feel like discussing one you're into? Check out our I Love, Love, LOVE TV thread. We've even got show threads for Torchwood, Doctor Who, Dollhouse, and the ongoing Whedon 'fest that is the S3.
And it wouldn't kill you to check out our website! We've got fanfic, pretty pictures, and reviews. We like to think it's pretty awesome...
One thing some people have NO curiousity about is spoilers. If you know something juicy that hasn't aired, posting it on the main board is a good way to get eaten. Spoilers belong in the Spoiled Souls thread; if you want to talk about casting spoilers, the little ghosty button above is for you and if you want to talk about a show that just aired, please mark in BIG LETTERS.
And if you're brave and/or curious enough to talk politics, religion, or other touchy topics? Venture into out our Open Topics Thread. No biting!
Now, go explore all the hollows of the S3!

Erin -- great poster!
Makes me think of Jon Stewart's interview with Neil Degrasse Tyson when Jon was trying to understand the mentality of someone who would go to Mars and not get back for 2 years (or more).
And Tyson was basically saying "maybe you don't have the eplorer's gene and I (and others do) and we are all thinking who wouldn't want to do that?"
I wonder if some of it depends on how comfortable you are "at home?" I don't even want to explore a new grocery store but when I was younger I moved away from home and further away and further away. Of course, I always knew I could call or visit anytime.
I am in awe of people who sailed away from Europe to settle in foreign countries.

Since we started a new part (thanks, Erin!!), I'm gonna repeat this post from the last page of the old part: Lola posted some amazing winter pics (with snow sculptures) and I posted a poem I found of Vince's, in the S'cubie Photo Album.

<snip> Now, go explore all the hollows of the S3!
I like how this begins and ends. All that is missing is an "abandon all hope, all ye who enter here" sign. But then, we don't want to scare the fresh blood n'ubies off before they even start, do we? Speaking of which, I wonder what ever happened to our n'ubie who was going to try to write a couple of reviews? Of course, I can't talk when it comes to not following through on reviews. She's probably finding out how much harder it is, than it looks. But here's hoping she comes through with something.

Copying posts from the last thread:
As I've said before, I've been trying to figure out what to do with my cats during rotations. I thought that my mom's cousin would be able to take them, but I talked to her last night and she's not sure at this point if she'd be able to. So I was wondering whether any of y'all would be able to take them for me, either for the next 2 years and/or permanently, or might know some one who could?
*******
My options at this point are either to find a central location in Wyoming and leave Yuri and Val there and be gone half the time, or to find some one to take them, put all my stuff in my parents storage locker, and to sleep in the hospital accommodations or whatever place I can find.
I have to 6 months my 3rd year at some yet to be determined location around here, and then the rest hopefully in Wyoming. 4th year I have to do 4 months (hopefully consecutive, but who knows at this point) at a yet to be determined location around here and the rest in Wyoming, except for possibly an international rotation and a wilderness medicine location. And even in Wyoming, it's likely that I will have to travel from city to city. I won't even start figuring out what my schedule will be until March, and even then circumstances can change right up to the moment that I start the next rotation.
I hired a pet sitter to come by 2x/week when I was gone this summer, and even so, it was really stressful on Yuri and Val. And that was only 2 months. I really don't think it's fair to be leaving them alone for so much longer, even if I could afford to hire a pet sitter to come by daily. It's been bad enough with them couped up in my room these past 2 years and not spending nearly enough with them. I really think I owe it to them to give them a better home if I can and to myself to not have the added stress of wondering if they're OK on top of everything else.
*******
Yuri is 5, Val is 1ish.
Ideally, I'm looking for some one to take care of them during my 3rd and 4th year only. After I graduate, I'll be able to settle down and get an apartment wherever I do my residency, so I'll be able to take them back then. But of course 2 years is a long time, and I have to accept the fact that Yuri and Val might be too attached to wherever they are and it would be too disruptive to remove them. That would be the only reason it would become permanent.

Thank you for your comment about your own cats, Julia; that's very reassuring to me.

#wavey# Today is back to college day. First class starts in 8.5 hours, I have to get up to go in 6 hours, and already I am awake. Clearly today is going to go really well. #wavey#

I went to college and now I'm home again.
There wasn't a severe weather warning when I went out, but then there was BIG WIND and that thing where you're walking but not going anywhere a little and that other thing where I was really glad I wasn't on the double decker bus cause the short bus kept acting like it got punched in the side. And then I checked the weather warnings and it says severe gales. Wow, I had not noticed.

Morning S'cubies! I had my second hapkido class last night. I felt great when it was done! I never realize how much I need physical activity until I'm done. The downside: I was paired at one point with someone who clearly does not believe in deodorant. Whoa. How does one deal with that? We were working on some moves that involved being within inches of one another, and it was all I could do to not react to the smell. It was quite intense.

Waiting for Anna to drive her dad to work so I can have a few moments to compose myself and call the dentist and work out how the screw up on their records end is going to be rectified since the reason they think I owe them $272 is that they fucked up their report to the insurance company and reported that I had impossible work on a tooth that I am scheduled to have a crown replaced on so that I wouldn't get that work compensated either.
ARGH
Julia, thus combining my two favorite things, phone calls and dentistry

[At least they did the "placate the angry customer by reducing her bill for 6 months" thing but it didn't stop me from making a complaint that implied that the disparity in customer service between the north Nashville office and the office in the county south of us was blatantly racist. All of which could have been avoided if the FIRST customer service rep on the phone had informed me of the option of switching out equipment by mail instead of driving to an office. And this is me NOT complaining about it. ] Feeling very virtuous because I typed up a 4 paragraph email about my "ordeal" and then deleted it without sending. Possibly most annoyed because Comcast made me break my New Year's Resolution to complain less about (relatively) minor stuff.

Anne,
Maybe you already knew this but there was a reason why that last episode of Chuck resembled a finale:
Last week's episode, the 13th, was designed to work as a season finale or maybe even a series finale, which is why it sometimes felt like they were rushing to wrap things up
So, kudos to the show runners for setting things up in case more episodes were not ordered.
However: having a satisfying season (or series) finale is actually not an excuse for the 3 episodes leading up to the finale to be composed of "filler", "filler", and "filler." Ah, no.

Possibly most annoyed because Comcast made me break my New Year's Resolution to complain less about (relatively) minor stuff. Anything you have to do before noon on Monday is, ipso facto, not minor. The worst thing about my dental annoyance was that I received the paperwork Thursday night; my dentist doesn't work Fridays. Si I've had three days of annoyance and intermittant low-grade panic over their mistake. It was the simplest sort of data entry mistake, too: they missed a space filling in the claim field, and moved all the codes one space right; tooth 23 with composition filling on three surfaces became tooth 2 with an amalgum filling on two surfaces, denied because it was "inconsistant with patient's history" and wham bam please pay $272 dollars. More evidence that instead of making life easier, computers make it just as difficult, but faster and with a slightly different source of error. Julia, sorry about Comcast; we're overdue for some sort of screw-up with them I'm sure
