I came to a decision today. Part--a big part--of my decision to retire came from the fact that this job is causing my health to deteriorate. Last night I couldn't sleep and ended up staying home. Now tonight is the same.
Originally I planned to take my accumulated leave in a lump sum payment when I left. I've been in the habit all these years of saving up my leave until I was in a use or lose situation. But really, there's no need for it any more. Either they will pay me for the leave or I'll take the time and get paid for it anyway.
Today, having created a four day weekend for myself, opened my eyes to something. Why am I continuing to put forth all this effort when there's less than five weeks to go? I already plan to take at least two Fridays off to attend Cons. I'm also taking the last one off before my final departure. That leaves two other weeks. So I've decided that I will only work three days a week in my final weeks on the job. I'm also considering cutting back the hours I'm in the office as well. Normally I work 10 hour days from 6:30 AM until 5PM, but I think starting next week I'll cut back to 8 hours and leave at 3.
Would you believe it? Next week is mid-year review. Like there's ANY reason for me to have one. Never mind. I'll go in, sign whatever they want to give me and continue my countdown.
Still hard to believe I'm really doing this.
Bob is ecstatic.

Fulking SNOWJulia, grrrrrrrr Yes, y'all were featured on the Weather Channel as being in contrast to the rest of the country. Just watched the Chicago noon news on WGN and they are setting records right and left. Me? I think it will be a huge shock when April is 30 degrees colder than March, possibly 40. We had three days last week where it peeked into the 60s for a bit in the afternoon, and one that pushed 70. Mom would say "too hot too soon" and Dad would call it "pneumonia weather." I have to get up and go wash the bathroom chicken cages and it's in the thirties and drizzling right now, ugh. By the way: I'm not avoiding y'all or anything, I've barely written anything anywhere this week, busy and a little sick and Franklin's got something in his tummy that's making him unhappy. Writing means thinking and when I think I make lists of all the things I should have finished by now and then I get bummed out, so it's easier and more productive to put my head down and just keep pushing forward. Julia, stuck in winter mode

Fulking SNOWJulia, grrrrrrrr Wow. Just. Wow. Been the weirdest start to 2012. Bailey and Anna were at the St. Louis zoo on Monday, 76F and sunny. I had the power go off for a bit that morning, and promptly freaked the heck out- the insanity in January has left me prone to nightmares and unformed waking dread. Julia, too much to do outside to be trapped inside by bad weather.

A few more details: Allison has been offered, and accepted a job in NYC: webcast and digital media specialist. lowest on a team of 4 or 5. at The Conference Board: www.conference-board.org/ going to start next Tuesday, the 20th. and to answer your question, tom, it's actually super duper convenient from roosevelt island. I take the tram and walk 7 of the mini blocks down and one long block over-- it's at 845 3rd ave ny ny if you want to map it. They know she has Tom's wedding to attend in April. Decent starting salary if you didn't live in NYC, but very incentivizing opportunities for annual bonus and annual raise. And, she likes being low man in a group of 4-5 so she can learn from others. Although she's been told she's IT on April 6 as everyone else is out of the office. More wedding related shopping today. shoes and makeup (well, those are definitely things that can be worn at future weddings and events through the next decade. And, honestly I'm not planning much further than another decade, 2 at the most. so it's an investment.

I should just suck it up and look at the weather satellite, shouldn't I? Who knows, it might show blue skies in ten minutes!
Julia, not thrilled with this reality, may I have another?
