I need super-strength, teleportation, or the miraculous appearance of a strong young person with good farming instincts today more than ever.
Also, more than anything, I need a much better place to put the chickens in the bathroom which does not involve me holding both ends at once of an eight-foot board up over my head.
Julia, vibing is no substitute for carpenters...

Tomorrow Emily is going to converse with her Spanish professor, for ten minutes, en español. It's a skills test; if she passes, she can skip the last Spanish class required for her linguistics BA and graduate this semester. Then she can apply to the grad program, start her graduate work in the fall, and, as a bonus, get paid actual $ for TA-ing instead of doing it for love and the experience. The Spanish prof thinks she'll be just fine; she already talks linquistics with him (he's also un lingüista), sometimes, as she says, in Spanish, but still, I'm going to be all digits until I hear the results. Now, if I could just figure out how to motivate Kitty... It's not helping that the cutbacks on the community college level have made it impossible to get a full load of classes, and it's only going to get worse. From all I've read, a whole lot worse, fast.

I wanted to stop by and say hello and see how everyone was doing and also to hopefully stop Spring from reading and commenting on my fic. ;D So, hello! How's every little thing? Spring, if you don't ship it, don't read it! There are things in there that your eyes will never be able to unread! ;D Have you forgotten that I once wrote some Spike/Giles fic while we were in VT with Lola and Sara?? So, heck, I know all about it! Well, not ALL about it, as I am learning from your fic. Come back!! Sorry I missed you. You wanted to write that Spike/Giles fic, you can't lie to me!

Today I felt pretty good working in the clinic. Today I feel like I don't know anything. Sigh. I've been rewatching all the star treks on netflix. Just finished watching ST:TNG, and I was struck by there being a lot more continuity than I remembered there being. Of course, that made all the general non-continuity stand out all the more. But still: interesting. I have this working hypothesis about the television making a shift from favoring episodic to storyarcing formats around the late 80s-90s, progressing up to the 2000s where strong storyarcs are favored, inspired by the progressive development of VHS, DVDs, DVRs, and digital media. Would make an interesting research topic. Also, food porn: I thought so; that's why I wrote my thesis about it. Actually, "seriality" used to not be considered a good thing, being associated very strongly with soap opera, which, as with anything that has a large female audience, can often be looked at by programmers, creators, and executives, as low-quality. But, starting with the 70s/80s quality programming drama, such as St. Elsewhere, Hill Street Blues, etc, it started becoming more mainstream. And, of course, you can see an excellent example of it in Twin Peaks, which required a high degree of investment to work out what was going on. And, of course, Buffy was given a great deal of credit for melding horror/soap-melodrama/and comedy, as well as employee "memory" and "seriality." Robert Thompson's Television's Second Golden Age talks about that quite a bit (although it was published in 1997, so he doesn't talk Buffy). I'm a big fan of seriality.

Woot! OK, what's our challenge?
The U.N. - cool! So, we have to bring about World peace thru clothes? I'm guessing no ...
Oh! Select a flag and then use the colors and culture of a flag to inspire our design! Coolio!
I like India, or Jamaica.

So - we need to pick a flag for inspiration . . . Here's some . . . Oooooh, they're all so cool! I'm torn on the outfit, but we TOTALLY have to have a giant globe for a hat/headdress thing! I like the flag in the bottom row with the lion-y dragon-y thing on it. We could do a green robe-like thing with a red animal twined around it.
