I made a bird. Congratulations, it's a wug. I gave it to Emily, since wugs are a linguistics mascot. This is a wug. (Link to Wikipedia article) Mine isn't as cute as the original, but it was a simple design, so a good way to test out the pattern and instructions. I'm going to clean up, and then I want to start planning the next one. It's going to be a Western bluebird; I think I have all the right colors of felt and thread on hand. The wug is cute.
I had never heard of a wug - thanks for the link, what an interesting article about an interesting woman.

Howdy all, thanks for good news and other news, and Diane, yay for Maddi!
June and July are always a slog here, and I'm screwed up by trying to keep my esophagus working, which means no leaning over and less heavy lifting. I see the Gastroenterologist Tuesday, and we'll see from then on.
I still really need to get rid of the sheep. Even when I just pen-feed him taking care of him takes an extra hour or two a day and carries with it the danger of injury. He's hot and itchy and bored, and I feel guilty about violating the social contract.
On the other hand, Giles is a delight, excepting his dedication to finding new holes under the grass.
I'm about to make a couple of new Atlantis recommendations, after I make sure I haven't recommended the stories before.
Life, man, I have an hour and a half before I go to the 4th of July potluck at Mervies.
Julia, which means I've got to shower and put on all different clothing, urgh.

Hello all.
Sorry I've not been around much. My laptop is dead. Apparently, according to the guy at the genius bar, some liquid got into it...either coffee with cream and sugar or cola. Which is funny, because I take my coffee black and gave up cola in 1997. Maybe something happened in Cali. Also, a Doctor Who DVD is trapped inside, leaving a 4-episode hole in that season; the guy said he'd have to rip it apart to get the DVD out. Either way, it's a bummer, as it is out of warranty and I don't have the funds to replace it.
On the plus side, I actually remembered to back the whole thing up before I left for the conference, so the only thing I lost was the DVD.
Promise my next post will be more cheerful. Hugs to those who need it.

So, Residency has taught me that I cannot work in a hospital again ever, after I'm done training. My ICU rotation has taught me that I do not want to be a Full Code again. Ever.

Had you thought you might? (work in a hospital?) Is this the kind of thing the rotations are designed to help you figure out? So what direction are you thinking of going?

AC and furnace (both 25 years old, never had even one problem with the furnace but the AC dies every couple of years -- it's just not powerful enough for 3000 sq ft and day after day of 95 degrees. And we try hard not to use lights or cook.
Also, everything we do is with an eye toward selling someday (although who knows it may all have to be done again if we stay here another 20 years).
so a high efficiency version of both being installed today. With dual thermostats up and down and electronic baffles --- I gather new houses are being built with separate up and down units but that would take redoing all of the duct work, so this will sort of act that like, directing the hot or cold air to the level that is requesting it.
Of course, only a dipstick arranges to have her AC replaced in JULY! I've run it almost non-stop for the past 48 hours, getting the house down to 67 degrees this morning (that's cold for AC, we usually keep it 74-75 in the summer). And we had clouds until a while ago so house as stayed comfortable so far.
