Wouldja believe I have neither CD's nor a CD player? It's been years since I was seriously into listening to music; but I still love my favorites, and play my tapes in the car. I don't have too many favorites from the 90's and none from the last three years. 20 Favorite Rock&Roll Songs (not my only favorites, but twenty OF my favorites):
1. THE LION SLEEPS TONIGHT- Ah wingah-wep, Ah wingah-ep, in the jungle, the mighty jungle, the lion sleeps tonight. I just love it; and the way the different lines of song all burble together at times is neat.
2. BUNGLE IN THE JUNGLE - By Jethro Tull. slightly similar to "The Lion Sleeps Tonight", but sounds more like a mighty pagan hymn, yet puts me in mind of Hinduism, and LORD OF LIGHT (one of the greatest SF novels ever written)3. CUP OF CRIMSON WONDER - also by Tull, with neat elements of Celtic/druid religion. 4. KILLER QUEEN - think it's by Queen, but I'm not sure. Love it. Puts me in mind of "Kali" in LORD OF LIGHT. Every time. 5. EYE OF THE TIGER - by Survivor. A perennial favorite. 6. AMERICAN PIE - by Don McLean. Just grand. 7. JERUSALEM - also by Don McLean, though not as well known. 8. JERUSALEM - Emerson Lake & Palmer I think, take the religious hymn and rock it hard and LOUD. 9. NOT BE FOUND - from an old Seals & Croft album. 10. HOLDING OUT FOR A HERO - Bonnie Tyler (also love her TOTAL ECLIPSE OF THE HEART, I flipped a coin to see which should be on this list) 11. LOVER'S CROSS - Jim Croce. Spike should have paid attention to this song; but if he had, he wouldn't have been there to save the world in CHOSEN. 12. THE STRANGER - by Billy Joel 13. WE DIDN'T START THE FIRE - by Billy Joel 14. STAND IN THE PLACE WHERE YOU WERE - don't know if that's the right title, and I can never remember whether it's by REO or REM, but I like it. 15. STAND BY ME - I think I like the second version best, but the original is good too 16. WEREWOLVES OF LONDON - by Warren Zevon 17. THEY COME TO AMERICA - by Neil Diamond; please correct me if I have the title wrong 18. BRIGHT EYES - I believe it's from the Watership Down soundtrack and is sung by Paul Simon, but am not sure. Makes me tear up when I hear it. 19. CRACKERBOX PALACE - George Harrison. 20. IN YOUR WILDEST DREAMS - the Moody Blues. Just love it. There's a trilling instrumental 'bridge' (I think that's whatchacallit) in there somewhere that I particularly adore, but the whole song is fantastic. I don't like any kind of rap, and am lukewarm towards most country music. I like dulcimer music and bagpipes; and love the Chieftains, though I prefer Irish Music when they do stuff without vocals. SOME FAVORITE CLASSICAL MOVIE SOUNDTRACKS: 1. THE MISSION 2. BLADERUNNER 3. DR. ZHIVAGO 4. CHARIOTS OF FIRE 5. LAWRENCE OF ARABIA SOME FAVORITE MUSICALS: 1. THE KING AND I - alltime favorite musical. 2. PIPPIN - a favorite of my mispent youth 3. SOUTH PACIFIC 4. JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR 5. LES MISERABLES SOME FAVORITE CLASSICAL NUMBERS: 1. THE MOLDAU RIVER, by Smetana; loved it since 7th grade 2. CONCERTO PARA ARANJUEZ - by Joaquin Rodrigo 3. NIGHT ON BALD MOUNTAIN - by...Mussgorsky 4. NINTH SYMPHONY - By Beethoven 5. SABRE DANCE - by Khachaturian FAVORITE OPERAS/OPERETTAS 1. THE MAGIC FLUTE - my favorite, especially the movie version by Ingmar Bergman. LOVELY! 2. LA BOHEME - seen it with Luciano Pavorotti. (I was a friend of one of his girlfriends, though thankfully she had the sense to move on.) I love Musetta's numbers. 3. THE PIRATES OF PENZANCE - I remember, with much fondness, the production with Kevin Kline, Rex Smith and Linda Ronstadt. 4. AIDA - a grande dame of an opera 5. DON GIOVANNI - but only when Don G is onstage, 'cause all the other characters pale in comparison I love military music and marches from many countries, including ours. I forget who posted that they were knowledgeable of ENYA music. Could that person tell me if they know whether ENYA did a song which included the phrase "Who knows where the time goes...". I very much want to see the lyrics around this line... Gail

While I'm poking around writing my review of MR and Chance, check THIS out -- James' own comments on many burning issues. Better transcribed than I can show you from memory. www.upi.com/view.cfm?StoryID=20030610-010116-3263rWhat he said didn't bother me much. He's clearly of the mind that B/S do not belong together -- which is fine, 'cause he's got a character to carry on without Buffy. Someone did ask the question "Do you think S/B made love the night before the final battle?" and he paused, gave it some thought and said "No, I don't think so. But it was left open." Also, what he says about the movie being filmed in Italy is just great. Especially since he revealed, in person, indisputable, it's out there now, that he had been married (did my homework, to a woman named Liane Davidson, they have a son, Sullivan). Being present for it, it did seem to be a very candid admission that of course, endeared his fans to him even more -- if that is at all possible. This man can speak to an audience of 800--and you still feel as if he is speaking to you alone. Enjoy! Mare, this is such a fine article that I wanted to share it around, so I copied it and made it a new thread on the Main board, crediting it to you as finder.

Hi ya Gail-
Enya has an album A Day Without Rain that includes a song Only Time-
lyrics-
Who can say where the road goes where the day flows -only time and who can say if your love grows as your heart chose -only time
who can say why your heart sighs as your love flies -only time And who can say why your heart cries when your love lies -only time
who can say when the roads meet that lovemight be in your heart And who can say when the day sleeps if the night keeps all yur heart
who can say if your love grows as your heart chose -only time And who can say where the road goes whee the day flows -only time
Who knows- only time Who knows- only time
she has a beautiful album as well entitled Shepherd Moon
There is also a song by Sandy Denny called who knows where the time goes- some of those lyrics are below
Across the evening sky All the birds are leaving But how can they know It's time for them to go Before the winter fire I will still be dreaming I have no thought of time For who knows where the time goes Who knows where the time goes
And I am not alone While my love is near me I know it will be so Until it's time to go So come the storms of winter And then the birds in spring again I have no fear of time For who knows how my love grows And who knows where the time goes
(different from Enya's)

"Enjoy" is not the word I would have chosen for those remarks of James'. Sigh. I'm not one to say "I told you so" but if I were than I'd say I did. Of course we can interpret the text and ambiguities any way we like. That's our perogative. But I'm just saying, it sounds like James confirmed my take on it. NOT that I'm at all happy about it, and so far I've read only the first few paragraphs (printed it out to take home with me) but it does sound as if I was *right* in my gloomy interpretation of the finale. I only take what happens on the shows as canon, not what the actors say offstage. James doesn't own Spike, I assume that ME does. James plays Spike, and of course has more insight into the character, but his is not the final word on the subject unless it's onscreen, as far as I'm concerned.
And if Buffy didn't love Spike, then why the tender looks when she rescued him from the First and then again in FIRST DATE when they were briefly checking each other's lumps and bumps after the fight with Lyssa? Buffy sure never looked at Xander that way! The last time I saw such an intense display of controlled emotion on her face was when she kissed Angel prior to sending him to hell to save the world. I believe Buffy loved Spike. Maybe not a strong enough love to keep them together forever, but she did love him. Sometimes, however much two people love each other, it isn't enough for a long-term relationship. Both Buffy and Spike have a lot of growing up to do before they can make such decisions anyway. Buffy needs to experience some normal life; and Spike needs to get through a year or two without making any woman the center of his life.

Mare, this is such a fine article that I wanted to share it around, so I copied it and made it a new thread on the Main board, crediting it to you as finder.
Nan, Thanks for posting the interview. I have to say after reading several JM and SMG interviews over the years, they sometimes get it wrong. Whether it's trying to go along with what they think is the party line, or whether its hard for them to have the same perspective fans have from the outside, I don't know. If Spike was playing evil these last two seasons, you certainly could have fooled me. If that was his task as an actor, he failed. I think he's trying to let Joss have total leeway to make any plans he may have for Spike in the future work. I don't think even Joss believes that Buffy doesn't love Spike, whether she knows it or not. That doesn't mean the scripts don't go in another direction depending on who's available, when, and what the best rating decision is. And lets not forget, unfortunately, Joss lurks at the Bronze.

And lets not forget, unfortunately, Joss lurks at the Bronze. Rusty, your post made me think of two things:
1. Maybe we will get sufficient reputation that Joss will sometimes lurk with US! (could happen, right?)
2. What ANYBODY says about a work of fiction, including its author, is of only minor interest. Sometimes (but not always, even then) such info tells us what was intended, consciously. But much art is not under conscious control, and some of it is completely serendipitous--it just happens because it happens. Only reasonable interpretations of the artwork AS ACTUALLY WRITTEN/PERFORMED have any substantial value at all.
So that JM has one take and MG has another take and JW has a third take, ad infinitum ad nauseum, sounds all impressive but it isn't. We are the final arbiters of what got put on that screen, and what they intended may bear very little relationship indeed to the finished product. So don't anybody be overimpressed by artistic pronouncements. They're not worth much, if anything. So there!
Later: And I see by intervening posts that both Gail and Rusty already have a healthy skepticism in this regard. Yea, us!

PBS has been running an interview series - Bill Moyers and Joseph Campbell - It occurred to me that Joseph Campbell would have probably liked BtVS.
Has anyone done an analysis of his possible influence on the show? Has Joss ever mentioned reading any of Campbell's work, like Hero with a Thousand Faces, for example? You've gotta admit, Joss sure put a new face on the archetypal hero (although there are quite a few mythic heroines, I have a whole book of them).
Just one of those wonderings...

So much creativity happens on a subconcious or unintentional level, that to take total responsibility/credit for what you create is dishonest, altho not always purposely so. Art takes on a life of its own. And thank god for that.

Just one of those wonderings... I suspect our Joss is an equal opportunity thief of ideas. I wouldn't be surprised if he were acquainted with Campbell's works--either Hero with 1,000 Faces or the more compendious The Masks of God in 6-7 volumes (I forget). I love Campbell's syncretizing themes/memes in worldwide religions and myths. However, our ways part when he gets to his bottom line, which is essentally "People make these up to feel better and make sense of the world around them." (i.e., NO myths/religions have any objective validity at all) and "Therefore follow your bliss" (i.e., if it feels good, DO it. And I'm a bit too Puritan to go far with that one.) So I am hugely impressed and edified by Campbell's erudition and thoughtfulness, but I have to part company with him when he contends that there are no objective correlatives for these human inventions at all. Nope. Can't go with that.

Wow. My music post sure generated a ton of interest. Most importantly it has opened my mind to a world of interesting things that I've never listened to. While I tried to read everyone's selections as best I could, I shall add a few more that slipped my mind last night:
Miles Davis-Porgy And Bess, Miles Ahead Duke Ellington-Live Newport 1956 Sly and the Family Stone-There's A Riot Goin' On Vladamir Horowitz-Horowitz In Moscow Vince Guaraldi-A Charlie Brown Christmas (don't laugh) Weather Report-Heavy Weather Dire Straits-Brothers In Arms Santana-Abraxas The Doors-self titled Isaac Hayes-Shaft soundtrack James Brown-Star Time (box set) Pink Floyd-Dark Side Of The Moon Men At Work-Business As Usual Earth, Wind and Fire-Gratitude Moby-Play Buena Vista Social Club--self titled
James, I hope you read this. I, too, enjoy early hip-hop. There was never an entire album that I completely loved, so I didn't list one, though Lauryn Hill certainly mixes it up on her solo album, which I did list. Anyway, hip-hip tracks I love:
Tennessee-Arrested Development (My opinion? Best hip hop track EVER) It Takes Two-Rob Base and DJ EZ Rock Bust a Move-Young MC Straight Outta Compton-NWA Ice T-You Played Yourself The Humpty Dance-Digital Underground Set Adrift On Memory Bliss-PM Dawn Jump Around-House Of Pain O.P.P-Naughty By Nature What's My Name?-Snoop Dogg
One big one that I haven't seen mentioned...
If you ever get a chance to spend some...errr....extra special quality time with someone you love, slide Ravel's "Bolero" into your CD player at the proper moment.
