I have visions of getting up there by scooter (that would be the farthest trip I've ever taken by scooter) but will probably chicken out and take the bus.
Stupid garage.
Hey Nan, I don't remember -- do you wear a helmet when you're on your scooter? There was an accident in Brooklyn on Monday -- a 24-year old guy was riding his the wrong way on a one-way street (around midnight, no less) and collided with a van. He wasn't wearing a helmet, and suffered severe brain damage (no follow-up on whether he survived or not, but the outlook was grim). Apparently, these things are illegal to drive in NY in public areas.
Where do you take yours?

There's a gathering next summer? Where? When? Details? Nan, are you planning to go to the Writer's Con in Las Vegas? The Con Committee has been kind enough to invite me as a pro guest, all expenses + food. I definitely am going!

I vote for bus, Nan! We want you to get there safely. Somebody, please tell Mary about Spring's get-together--next summer, isn't it? I forget the details, except that I'm going!

Where do you take yours? Good thing I don't live in NYC anymore. And no, I don't wear a helmet. I know it can happen, but the only accidents I've had in Cinci in 25 years have been being rear ended by cars while in a car. No SERIOUS accidents with the scooter, though a year ago spring, the scooter went out from under me on a wet sewer cover in a rainstorm and I broke my arm. Only time I had damage-to-me trouble in 15 years or so on the scooter and the only bone I ever broke in my whole life. I go everywhere in about a 20 mile radius with it, except on the expressways. I take the local roads and State Routes, not the Interstates. The longest trip I ever took on the scooter was about 60 miles each way to Dayton, to look at a car (the one I recently sold). Nice little car, it was.... A Geo Metro.

Hmph, no one mentioned that your dress turns to dust at midnight too!! Now I'm naked and I have no transportation. That's what I get for being on the board at this hour.
Just saying hi all (which, from the looks of it, just means Patti & Laura).

'Night Nan I should turn in too but I just got done decorating a Harry Potter cake for someone and I had a wee bit too much frosting. I'm a little hyped at the moment and, though I desparately want to sleep, I know I will just sit there and stare at the ceiling. So, instead, I'm emailing myself pics of the cake. Aren't I considerate to myself?

We have a new face in Profile of a S'cubie. Sandy Shores has graced us with her visage and a peek under her covers...umm her cover...inside? OKay.. Scratch that... She sent in her profile. Check it out and find out just what she and Harrison Ford have very much in common.
Also, I would like to take this time to give everyone that wished me a happy birthday yesterday a big hug and kiss. Well, except for Rob, Dave and James... they just get a hug and a sorta nervous tension back-pat followed by a punch in the shoulder. *L* Seriously, they all made me smile. Thanks for making my special day that much better!
So, enough of all that sentimentality... go gawk at Sandy. *L*

Aren't I considerate to myself? It is a terriic cake and I think you should post a pic on the picture thread. In fact, I could do it for you but you're offline and I'd want your permission first. So let me know tomorrow and I will if you want me to. I think people would enjoy seeing it.

Mary, We are having a first annual non-reunion (cause we haven't unioned yet, so can't re-union) sometime next summer. Spring thought of it first, so if it looks like it will work out for her we'll be having it near her in a so far undisclosed place in Ohio. If you think you truly might go, you should email or IM Spring and tell her that and tell her if there are any dates that are out for you. She is trying to find the time when most of us can go. If you are not sure yet, you can wait until you are more sure before emailing her. She's trying to get a count of those who are pretty positive they will come. If it doesn't work out for Spring, (and she thinks it really will) we'll still have it, just somewhere else.

I have a habit of leaving my browser open here when I'm not really looking at the board, so it looks like I'm here paying attention, but I'm not...otherwise, I'd have answered her right away.

I just want to know what you all were drinking yesterday - I left with maybe 12 pages and then come back to 37 in the locked part and 5 in the newest. My finger hurts from clicking the mouse!
EG and Patti are my fellow vegetable queens. Last night at dinner, we had courgettes (as they call zucchini here) in a yummy tomato sauce and broccoli that was just al dente and not mushy. I love squash but I prefer it without all the sweet stuff. I like it better roasted with garlic and butter. Same goes for sweet potatoes or yams - there's enough natural sugar in them that adding any more (i.e. candied yams) makes my teeth hurt. And I have been know to serve pumpkin soup in a hollowed-out pumpkin shell.
Last night's showing of OMWF was disappointing. First, they cut Dawn's ballet and the whole "What can't we face when we're together" which means we didn't hear Buffy sing, "Hey, I've died twice," which is just classic. But we had to watch on the tv in the student lounge and of course, some yahoos wandered by and made rude comments. I really wanted to flippersmack them but I restrained myself. I'm so used to being around people who understand the Buffyverse that I'm out of practice at dealing with philistines.
Hey, Nan, I'm glad to hear you'll be able to get an extension but I do sympathize with what you're going through. I've been through two corporate merger/layoffs and my current teaching job is being sliced and it's not because of ME! It's so disheartening to know (and hear from others) that you're doing a good job and still have it count for squat when it comes to actually keeping one. Have you ever considered substitute teaching? At least in KS, you can get a sub certificate if you're a college graduate and the work is flexible. Otherwise known as being able to turn down a job if you know the teacher can't control the class but will expect the sub to be able to do so. You might think about it if it won't mess up your benefits.
In order of preference: Fall (weather, birthday, new TV season), Winter (cozy, comfort food, SNOW DAYS!), Spring (fresh winds, dogwood blossoms) and I hate Summer! Humidity, heat, chiggers, ticks, whiny kids, and cicadas! Our house is surrounded by trees and by mid-August, you have to shout to carry on an outdoor conversation. Yay, no cicadas in England although there are these nasty little gnats that are everywhere. And there are no screens on the windows. Anywhere. And it hasn't been cold enough yet to kill the gnats. Oh well, I'll take gnats over cicadas any day.
The only thing that really works for me diet-wise is portion control and exercise. The only time I've been skinny as an adult was when I was on a horrific "Break up with your boyfriend" diet plan. I will never be skinny again but I can be healthy. I've lost 15 pounds in the past year by walking 3 to 3 1/2 miles at least 4 times a week and rarely having seconds. There are no forbidden foods, per se, but I do try to have five servings of fruits and veg a day and that helps me make good choices. There's a brewpub in Lawrence that makes excellent fish and chips (no green peas) and even serves them with malt vinegar but, despite their being fried in low-cholesterol oil, I only let myself get them every now and then and usually go for the black bean burritos instead. My only real food weakness is macaroni and cheese. I could eat it three times a day.
To all of you East Coasters who were in Isabel's path, I hope you wake up safe and sound this morning. We had a terrible ice storm here two years ago this winter (remember that one, Karalee? I don't know if it reached NE Missouri, Nickim,) and our yard was destroyed. It took weeks or cleanup, we lost major limbs off of several trees and one whole maple was gone. It was pretty for about two seconds and then it was just work for the chainsaw. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that no one has to deal with that kind of destruction today!

Deborah, in the current Chapter 15 of Journeys, from Mary, one finds the following paragraph:
“I don’t know that how they get their ‘jobs’ matters at this point. We have more serious things to think about. Caia’s acquaintance only had knowledge of two humans who’d had dealings with these creatures. The first died on her second visit from an influx of power from a D’Ebcoh En demon. She said the other probably wished for death often before it finally claimed him.”
I believe you've been shouted out to!

Wanted to say I loved your temp gauge for Houston! Just great! ;D Like the new avatar, Patti, but she doesn't have the, um, ferocity of the previous one.
