I'm glad this has come up. Personally, I've never been able to successfully attract any new viewers to BtVS (now AtS). So I put the question to the membership, How do you describe the show(s) in a way way that actually inspires someone's interest and after viewing, ultimately wins him/her over as a new fan?Because everyone I've tried to describe the show to tends to dismiss me with a shake of the head or if I keep on talking their eyes just start to glaze over until I take pity on them and shut up about it or at least change the subject. This tends to be the outcome of a lot of my TV, book or movie recommendations. I remember it happened quite a bit when I would try to urge people to read Terry Pratchett. So, I would greatly appreciate some examples of how you have successfully converted the uninformed and unitiated to becoming fans of BtVS/AtS. deborah It depends, for me, on the nature of the person. My mom will watch anything that's put in front of her, so there it was easy. My ex, well - he and I have many interests in common, like the same movies, even computer games, so he trusts (generally) that anything I enjoy probably isn't crap. Nonetheless, it was tough to talk him into sitting in front of it, so I went for the background noise method, which works on folks who pride themselves on being difficult. (I'm working on Gilmore Girls with him now - no success to report yet.) My sister is like my mom --- and with her, I also added the "Xander's a hottie" incentive. But I'm sad to report little success with complete outsiders. I'm trying with my current co-workers - but they don't get past the name, either. I say stuff like "Have you never heard of irony, people?", but that doesn't work. Oh - my former roommate is a feminist, so with her I played the "girl power" card and told her what a huge feminist Joss seems to be. That worked - she gave it an hour, and by the end was borrowing my tapes and making sure to be home in time to see it. I think if you can get someone in front of the T.V., then episode choice is key. Like my ex was a swim-team geek in high school; so Go Fish worked on him, though all it does for me is let me look at Xander in a Speedo. My sister loves a tearjerker, so I showed her The Body first. Even my dad got into Once More With Feeling and Hush. Actually, so did my brother-in-law - and also The Body. I caught him watching a few times.

I told this ages and ages ago, but ...new board, new audience... My friend Charles was easy to turn. He likes vampires and mystical things. I had him watch the first two or 3 episodes and he was hooked - the friendships - the 'family' among Buffy/Xander/Willow/Giles - that did it. As it had for me. My friend Dan was harder. He was an X-Files fan and felt nothing could ever compare. Then he caught an ANgel episode and began to get intrigued. We watched Angels last season and he was hooked into that in a few weeks. But he felt Buffy would be too juvenile. I told him in order to truly understand Angel he had to know the backstory...so he agreed to give it a try. He begrudgingly allowed me to show him the first few eps of Buffy. Meanwhile Charles and I had finished all six seasons of Buffy and were watching season seven together, and the three of us were watching Angel... so after Dan had seen half the first season of Buffy and realized he had not ONCE guessed the 'twist' - and had been startled many times and was talking back to the screen...he admitted that yeah, Joss Whedon was probably a genius and this was the best TV he'd ever seen. We are in mid season 3 of Buffy now, and of course, they are both still watching Angel... Turn two, the rest are food......

So, I would greatly appreciate some examples of how you have successfully converted the uninformed and unitiated to becoming fans of BtVS/AtS. deborah The two examples I mentioned in my post came about pretty much over time when I just kept bubbling over about the quality, yada, yada. Both sister (Kathy) and Stacy knew me and my tastes well enough to trust my recommendation. We shared a lot of favorite books in common. When season 1 came around on FX last time I printed out the episode list and specifically pointed out the prime eps. I pretty much got both of them to commit to watching parts of season 1 and season thru at least thru Innocence (is that where Angel loses his soul?). But, it was never a one or two ep thing. Thing is, both had time in there lives to give to it. Kathy's kids are off to school, she doesn't work, and she's had health problems which keep her in a lot. Stacy's husband is a quadraplegic so once they get home from jobs they stay in at night at lot. My younger sister has expressed interest but has NO TIME at all, so doesn't want to even check it out (seeing as how she sees how much it has taken over my life.) My husband won't watch. Well, not so much won't as doesn't bother. I think he's still a little wigged at what he sees as my "over-enthusiam" and wants us to have a life apart from the Jossverse, so he refuses get sucked in. Also, the time issue. I think if West Wing weren't on opposite Angel he would watch that with me. (And he watch Gilmore Girls as a bonding exp. with Allie last year rather than Buffy.) Maybe during reruns!

The name turns them off at the beginning. I try to tell them it's a much deeper show but they don't get it. They refuse to watch it. I'm sure me telling them they're morons for not watching it really doesn't help matters.

hey! hey! >:(It's actually been QUITE better this year thankyouverymuch I'll take your word for that, for now. The last time I tuned in, it wasn't fifteen minutes before she was out of her clothes. And for no good plot-related reason. I'll concede that I may have missed the good parts because I keep catching the exploitative parts. They certainly got off on the wrong foot with me in their pilot. I mean, anti-microbial gel? Please. We have better technology than that NOW. And understand, this is coming from a die-hard (and it was hard) Star Trek fan. Conventions and the whole bit. And I loved Quantum Leap. And every Trek series has had a bad first season, but when season 2 didn't catch me, either. . . .

Got the next to last section on Chapter 11 done and up. Gonna have to reserve the Michael/Spike challenge fight to the next chapter. This one is long enough as it is. Final section here will be the patrol. www.livejournal.com/users/nandibble/4525.htmlWhat? There's more? First...I'll go back and refresh and see what more has happened. I loooove this.

Overselling something always puts me off - no matter how good it is, it can never live up to the hype, and I'm liable to get turned against it anyway by all the talk. Try showing them a couple of selected episodes, in comfortable surroundings, with refreshments. No pressure, no comments. If they're the sort to appreciate the Jossverse, they'll get hooked. If they aren't, no amount of salesmanship will hook them anyway.

And, while we are waiting for the reviews to be posted--
Have you voted on the Picture Poll? Recorded your opinions on the ratings thread? Laughed out loud at the Nerd Alerts?
And speaking of investing time --- I must be off to do RL stuff, but I'm sure I'll be back. Both the kid and the hubby out late tonight, so only the dog to listen to be laugh out loud.
Be a great time to catch up on some stuff--let's see if I have any will power a-tall.

(although I'd recommend doing this no later than Sunday if you want them to watch it with you on Wednesday!)

Not only that, but the story hasn't really been consistent with the Star Trek time line, so I'm not loving that at all.

Speaking of reviews - I hope they'll be posted this morning sometime. I did my part. Anybody in contact with Vlad, give him a nudge. I already sent him a PM and he hasn't responded.
