I'm glad this has come up. Personally, I've never been able to successfully attract any new viewers to BtVS (now AtS). So I put the question to the membership,
How do you describe the show(s) in a way way that actually inspires someone's interest and after viewing, ultimately wins him/her over as a new fan?
Because everyone I've tried to describe the show to tends to dismiss me with a shake of the head or if I keep on talking their eyes just start to glaze over until I take pity on them and shut up about it or at least change the subject. This tends to be the outcome of a lot of my TV, book or movie recommendations. I remember it happened quite a bit when I would try to urge people to read Terry Pratchett.
So, I would greatly appreciate some examples of how you have successfully converted the uninformed and unitiated to becoming fans of BtVS/AtS.

I'm reading the paper right now (yep, getting some work done today!) and of course, the big to-do is all about Roy Moore and his removal from the Alabama Supreme Court.
In the paper, a minister is quoted as saying, "They have unleashed Chief Justice Moore on the nation."
I would just like to apologize to the rest of the nation. No one deserves that.

Deborah and Shanno - I am so confused. I have used both browsers but your messages are still blank, and Deborah, I have looked back all five pages and can't find the post on Initiating the Uninitiated, so what's the re-ing? Help! And now....the message shows up. Ok, this is the wackiest board wackiness yet....

Don't worry; it wasn't your fault...some people are just born that way.

That's too bad, your name was mentioned several times. And she told us a secret about you. Aww crap, she fixed it. I was just kidding

I have tried having it on in the background, but it never works. I was watching Becoming 1&2 at my mom's one time and I thought, surely, this will get her interested, but she fell asleep half-way through. I think those two episodes are epic and I can't understand why no one would want to stay awake and find out what happens. What is wrong with people?! Huh. Fell asleep??? I think my Dad's resistance is mostly because my mom likes it (don't ask; he's moving out this Saturday, actually - a teensy bit stressful), and my brother-in-law; well, for him, it's just contrariness. *His* dad, however, is a huge fan. Unfortunately, his dad also still watches Enterprise. No accounting for taste. I swear, if they rub gel on that Vulcan woman one more time. . . .

Sorry to have confused everyone. I hit Enter by mistake instead of Tab so my msg posted without content. I've just edited it to put the text in. Please go back to my original post.

And on this subject, I just got an email from the girl who used to work as my father's caregiver when he was living with me. She moved away about 3 months ago, but not before she and her husband had borrowed all of my Buffy tapes and DVD's and season 1 of Angel (and all of my Miles Vorkosigan books--good taste all round). Hadn't heard from her at all until today. Long chatty letter ending with: "I just finished recording season 7 of Buffy on Monday... should be done watching it in another week or so, as I just can't keep up with the 4-a-day pace of FX. I'm still loving it. In fact, I think I'm ready for the fan fic sites you recommended. Could you send the URL for those?" (I'm thinking there are several other URL's I'll send her as well.) Also "converted" my older sister. Her (minister) husband often uses Simpsons episodes in his sermons. He'd be a fascinating person to get involved in and discussing the Jossverse. (BTW: this is commerical announcement: any of you New Yorkers ever want to hear a spectular sermon I'll give you his service information. Best preacher in the U.S. this generation--intelligent, thoughtful, articulate, theologically conservative but a social liberal, yada, yada. Okay, you may return to you regularly scheduled conversation, sorry for the interruption.)

Got the next to last section on Chapter 11 done and up. Gonna have to reserve the Michael/Spike challenge fight to the next chapter. This one is long enough as it is. Final section here will be the patrol. www.livejournal.com/users/nandibble/4525.html
