I could see why the SP's are keeping Lindsey in another reality with a Darla-clone wife fantasy. They wanted to hold the Tiny Texan as a future Ace to use against Angel; Lindsey is one of the few people who can out-think Angel. To hold Lindsey while keeping his mind and body intact for future use, they needed him kept docile, hence the fantasy lifestyle...
GAIL X-Files did an episode where Mulder was in this kind of fantasy. Give up & stop struggling was the general message.

By the by, there are spoilers for 5.18 up at spoilerfix.com, and it looks like an episode full of Connor mentionage, for those who find that attractive.
Julia, knowing that there are serious Connor fanatics on this Earth but at a loss to say why.

Episode 10: SOUL PURPOSE: Directed by David Boreanaz, written by Brent Fletcher - knock 'em dead, Dave! This is the reverse 'It's A Wonderful Life', as Angel has repeating nightmares about Spike living Angel's life and Angel being destroyed. Christian Kane (ex-Lindsey) guest-stars, but isn't playing Lindsey. Or is he? And guess who saves Angel from a brain-parasite type of critter?
Episode 11: DAMAGE: Directed by Jefferson Kibbee, written by Stephen DeKnight & Drew Goddard. the one with the mentally damaged Slayer named Dana and Andrew's appearance, and Spike's working with Angel between snarks. Spike loses his hands or his arms, but the W&H medicos re-attach them. Angel comes to visit Spike and they actually have a rational conversation.
Episode 12: 100th Episode - The good news is that Cordelia Returns! The bad news is that it's her swan song...... YOU'RE WELCOME: Written and Directed by David Fury. Cordelia walks and talks and bawls out Angel. Cordelia has visions, and memories of Connor. Say TTFN to Lindsey and Eve. Cordelia died at the end of the episode, or retroactively at the beginning. Ave, Cordelia Regina!
Episode 13: WHY WE FIGHT: Written by Steven DeKnight & Drew Goddard. flashback to a WWII adventure; Angel and Spike meeting on a German U-boat; implications that Angel was working for the Americans; Angel, Spike and other vampires were prisoners...Spike and Angel play Good Cop, Bad Cop....Spike apparently had black hair at the time.
Episode 14: SMILE TIME. There's an evil children's TV show that is sucking the life out of kids. Literally. Angel and Gunn battle evil puppets. They might even be transformed into puppets themself, or at least Angel will be. I've heard that the Angel-puppet is torn apart and has to be put back together again at W&H. Nina the pretty blond werewolf-girl from UNLEASHED will appear. Nina tries to get cozy with Angel, but doesn't get anywhere. Supposedly, JW's child has started watching television and this might be the result. God help us when the tyke hits puberty!
At some point, can't remember in which episode, Gunn will need to upgrade his legal mojo and will make another dirty deal with W&H.
Episode 15: THE HOLE IN THE WORLD. JW will direct. Eve will supposedly reappear. Fred & Wes get closer, just in time for Fred to be infected by a mysterious parasite. Fred dies at the end of this episode, but her body is posessed by Illyria, the parasite-demon.
Episode 16: SHELLS Fred will be possessed by Illyria the ancient demon. Wesley goes on the warpath against Gunn and Knox, who somehow played a part in Fred's replacement by Illyria. Knox apparently worships Illyria as his goddess. Wesley injures Gunn and kills Knox. Wesley will also stay with Illyria and try to take care of her. Illyria has Fred's memories, as they used to say on STARGATE, "something of the host survives". Spike tells Angel that he wants to stay on at W&H and participate in the big fight. A big fight will take place at W&H - someone will be thrown out one of the windows, reportedly Angel himself. Oh, Angel tries to find Willow, but she's unavailable... Episode 15-16 might be a two-parter. After the big fight, only Spike and Angel remain (Lorne also, but not in fighting mode) to battle Illyria. They decide that they need Lindsey, and manage to free him from where the Senior Partners imprisoned him.
Episode 17. Might be titled UNDERNEATH, and is written by Fain & Craft. The survivors of the big fight will try to regroup. Angel & co. realize that they made a mistake in joining W&H (gee, ya THINK?!) This episode will also feature a suburban mother and son who are reportedly Lindsey's wife and stepson. Actually, they're spirits appointed by the Senior Partners to guard Lindsey in the alternate reality where they imprisoned The Tiny Texan. Gunn, feeling guilty over his role in Fred's death, has replaced Lindsey there, with a glamor, so the SP's won't know that Lindsey was sprung. Oh, Eve will be replaced in this episode, as Angel's liaison to the Senior Partners, though she won't be killed. The new liaison is a fellow named Hamilton. Seems Eve was telling the truth in that she really was the liaison to the Partners. Julie Benz is supposedly appearing in this episode and possibly others, though we don't know if she's playing Darla.
EPISODE 18 - Written by Drew Goddard. Centered around Connor's memories and their alteration. Connor will probably appear in this episode. Conner's 'parents' come to Wesley for advice...
Angel will talk with the warlock who did the memory wipe on everyone for W&H. Thankfully someone's remembered the prophecy that Connor will kill Sahjan. The problem is, Angel has to kill Sahjan, or the warlock will return Connor's memories; but only Connor can kill Sahjan.

Julia, involved with the whole real-life thing a little too much to go read it right now Ok, as much fun as this is gonna be, I'm still WTF with Spike. He's barely even in this ep, and he's sunk the last car Angel loaned him. Please tell me he's not trying to drive to Italy (a la Xander's driving to all 50 states).

SpoilerSlayer.com has the link to Pandora's summary of 5.17 "Underneath" up, as well as a bullet-point encapsulation of the summary, and some speculation about what it all means.
Julia, and it could mean something scary for Gunn, JDL

good old Fred is still looking sexy. But not willow vamp sexy I hope they find a way to restore Fred by the time the series ends. And I don't like the plot at all to begin with; it's already been done, beloved heroine possessed by a demon, and done to death... Don't like Spike torturing someone either. Can't remember if Dr. Sparrow was human or not. Guess it depends whether the torture consisted of slapping the guy or something far worse... GAIL

GAIL Right there with you, Scooter. At the same time, it's for FRED - and you know our Spikey - (citation courtesy of vrya.net) She was looking to go all pay-back-y on Glory for a minute, but I cooled her down, a little. Actually, a lot. SPIKE: So she's not going to do anything rash, then? BUFFY: No. I explained there was no point. SPIKE: Mmm-hmm! BUFFY: What? SPIKE: You.. so you're saying that a... powerful and mightily pissed off witch was planning on going and spilling herself a few pints of God blood until... you... what?... explained? BUFFY: You think sh...? No! I told Willow it would be like suicide. SPIKE: I'd do it. Right person. Person I loved. I'd do it. And everyone loves Fred - and Spike loves Fred because she believes in him!

In re upcoming episodes: Can I just say, I don't care who is writing them, (a) Been there, done that (demonic possession + death of regular female cast member) and (b) I don't like any of it! I'm lodging a formal protest! Save Fred! Mount the battlements! Bring out the picket signs! Write protest songs!
Oh well, Joss will do what he do do and there's no doing anything about it. But I don't think "Trust Joss" cuts it anymore, at least not for me.
Also, Fred's new look is a little too Trance, Warrior Princess (Andromeda) for me. I liked gentle purple Trance with tail, and I like gentle scholarly Fred. This is going to be a whole lot of no fun.
And in all fairness, at least Trance was still Trance, just an older and (one hopes) wiser AU Trance. Alas, poor Fred...
Going away now...

I actually liked Warrior Trance's look much more than that of Purple Trance. But Fred looks like she's wearing a rubber suit. Is she supposed to have grown claws or something? Because if they were implying physical change beyond the blue hair and weird eyes, they've failed miserably. I like the blue hair and weird eyes, but it's Illyria's look and not Fred's. And if they finish the series with Fred dead and Illyria running about in her body, I'll be quite peeved.
