I think GUILT had a lot to do with Willow's reaction - guilt over the way she had treated Tara when Tara was alive. Now Tara is dead; she can never make it up to her, she can never make it right, she must live forever with how much she hurt Tara - just when it seemed as if she was going to be able to make it all up to her.
Parallels between Willow and Spike were drawn all Season long during Season 6 - Spike's was basically evil with a spark of good trying to start a fire within him; Willow was basically good with a tiny seed of evil trying to grow in her.
Guilt over the way they had treated their beloveds let both things happen - Spike went off blazing off to get his soul, Willow let evil temporarily take her over.

//Just had to post a big THANK-YOU for recommending that fan-fic goodie. Made me feel a lot better too about that last scene between Buffy and Spike.//
You are most welcome. I want to share every goody I find. Besides *spreading the joy* it's so much fun to get feedback from others on how they felt about what ever it was.
Glad to hear it helped you feel better too. I'm going to have to send an Email of appreciation to the author for helping me feel better about what was for me, one of the most bitter moments in the episode, that when Spike told Buffy that she didn't love him.

Deborah said //one of the most bitter moments in the episode, that when Spike told Buffy that she didn't love him."//
I didn't really believe that Spike meant it when he said it, but because he said it like he did, I think it let the door open for all sorts of future conflict between the two (whether on screen or in our imaginations).
Joss said he "gives us what we need, not what we want". So I guess he figured we needed exquisite pain, more than we needed a joyful closure.
I'll have to post a thank-you to the author too. Sandy Shores

Just wanted to send off a quick THANK-YOU for your BtVS analyses. They are so entertaining! You've got a gift. Thought this thank-you would get lost on the new board.
Now, when I watch the reruns, I look for all the little nuances - even on shows that you haven't analyzed yet - so cool! You are quite the teacher.
Will you be lending all that talent to Ats this fall? I know you say you haven't been able to "get into" Angel, but maybe now with Spike on board, you'll be more apt to watch for any ebulgence (sp?)? (And I've learned to watch for that too - can't tell the kids about that one.)

I'm new to these boards--never felt the need until BtVS ended--but just wanted to say I loved Old Blood. I especially liked that Spike and Dawn healed their relationship.

When the time comes, will Alexandra do the final sign off?
It only seems fitting.

I felt the author of the original 'Greater Capacity for Good' article brought up one very good point - that the 'Angel' personality is a transient one artificially imposed by the Gypsy curse.
But I don't buy the idea that Spike is a 'better' person than Angel. Angel has also done a lot of good. Both vampires have accomplished some of their greatest deeds with their strongest motivation being their love of one particular person. Spike saved the world mainly for Buffy, and a bit to show off. Angel broke Jasmine's power mostly for Conner. Angel would have done practically anything for Conner; and might have sold his soul to Wolfram & Hart for the boy. I remember Angel sticking his hand into the sunlight to show that he would brave any obstacle to be a good parent for the infant Conner.
Also, the article overlooked Angel's being a better strategist than Spike. Of course, Spike gets more Heroism points for going out and getting a soul rather than having it thrust upon him.
I also think that Liam was a sociopath; which is one reason why Angelus was so vicious...

Regarding Tanya's being unaware of the Angel/Spike 'wars'; well, I was unaware of them. I can't believe that people would resort to verbal wars over the issue; much as I love the characters, it IS a TV show, not the U.N.
