IMO: Charlie is and has been using. That's why he's such a liar on the topic of the statues.
Listen to how he tries to come up with ways to talk Locke into letting him keep the statues - while claiming that he wants to destroy them. Except he's not acting AT ALL like someone who wants to, or had plans to destroy them. He's acting like someone desperate to keep them, who'll say whatever he has to say, to keep them.

Asking Locke's permission to sleep in the hatch? People give Locke too much power.
Save the baby because he can't save himself? Or because he couldn't save his neice?
Burning bush.
Again, even though Locke is right, he seems *really* menacing.
Charlie ostracized the group.

"How's our boy"? NOT the man you need to look to for protection. And now Locke's gonna manipulate it. NICELY DONE! "spiritual insurance" NOOOO no danger whatsoever... So, why did Charlie set the island on fire? Sayid!! Liam sold his piano for heroin?! "Have to take care of myself" by screwing your brother. He DOES have to go. But jesus... what a nasty trick.. "This is not the way"? He's much more a father in the roles he's assumed for him... Oh lord, Claire with tears in her eyes...that's so sad.. Great. Locke has the conviction of his righteousness. Enough so to deck a man that he thinks is ill, and KNOWS has no idea how to fight.

Charlie at the hospital, instead of Liam. Ep all about SALVATION. Locke with bottle of water in hand, talking about baptism. Ep begins with image of John the Baptist, no? "Who the hell are you, John?" Charlie dreams of his younger self. Charlie dreams he has to "save the baby," followed by images of grown-up Charlie dressed as a baby.

Locke, why the hell are you saving them?

I believe him in that he wasn't using.
What's Eko gonna find in the ashes?
Ah.. Claire's gonna go to Eko...
"Heaven came much later"
Eko has such a beautiful smile....
So what's locke doing... Is he changing the combo on the gun safe?
Ah yup, and he's storing the horse away in there.
No trusty lockey!!!!!
Oh, poor Charlie, pulling his hood up when he feels most vulnerable...
Next week..
"Nice thing about your people"
And we lose Sun..

What's Claire's religion?
This baptism scene is really beautiful.
Locke obsessive about the armory.

Charlie's been fighting an uphill battle his whole life, from the moment his mom put that boatload of manly responsibility on him... and his father telling him he's useless... and his brother using him, crapping on him while he tried to prop him up.. Liz is right, he's been searching for his niche, his place, the whole time..

OK - well, some random impressions: - Libby is lying to Hurely about him stepping on her foot - like Charlie with his lies, she doesn't "answer the question," but tries to distract him.
- Had to love the Sawyer line to Hurley: "You gotta load you need to drop in."
- Lots of fire & water imagery - diametrically opposed substances in some ways, but both purify.

Charlie flashback, eh? Oh wow! Another "special" kid! ;D Hmmmmm. Not a straighforward flashback, is it? More like a nightmare/hallucination. "Save us Charlie" ? Hmmmmmmmmm. Dreaming of the island ID monster? Not a good sign. Jealous of Lock-ness rears its head again. Ooh, that's a wicked look in Charlie's eyes!

Is Locke doing what Sawyer used to do, hoarding vital stuff to gain advantage?
Guns, drugs, what else is in that locked room?
I think Locke wants to gain control at a moment of crisis.

Liz is right, he's been searching for his niche, his place, the whole time.. Pretty much par for the human race. I thought the whole ep was about how the first person you have to save - before you can be useful in saving anyone else - is yourself. (Libby: "Hey, yourself!")

That's a boatload of manly responsibility right there, though the nicest Christmas present.... ;D Hmmmmm. Interesting idea. 'Cuz I'm also wondering if Claire and Aaron aren't another test for him.
