I hate to see Spike as a regular on Angel. An occasional guest shot, sure. A regular? Please God, no. I would want to see it only as a last resort (I do agree it's better than no Spike at all).
On "Angel", Spike would probably get even less screen time than he gets on BtVS - unless they want to rename and refocus the show, which I'm guessing wouldn't fly too well with the current star and cast-members.
I really dislike the idea of Spike as a regular on "Angel." I so want to see him in something that won't mean relagating him to the background in episode after episode.

I with you Spring. An occasional guest shot or regular minor role on Angel is no substitute for a feature role on a new show. BUT Alexandra made a good point a few posts back. I imagine unless JW/ME can keep JM under contract he'll be snapped up elsewhere and not available when a spin-off is finally ready. Still, I imagine any interim new contract that he'd agree to for minor Angel appearences would have to pay him at a star's level. Otherwise, how could they hold onto him?

Loving your reasoning, as it is so close to my own.
Just read an account of the Creation Con (March 3rd I think) at which James confirmed that the spinoff Joss had really planned was Eliza and James together, and he is disappointed that one didn't work out. However, he also said that he is still a part of all spinoff talks.
David Fury posted on the Bronze (this was at Slayage.com) that ..well, go read the interview yourselves, he and Drew Goddard both posted and talked about their joint writing of 'Lies....'. Cool stuff.

Don't know if you have been keeping up with the Angel news but Joss has said he IS refocusing the show, changing it up a lot. I don't know in what ways, nor do I want to be spoiled, but I can think of some very interesting things depending on how Buffy ends. I just want to keep the character of Spike alive and before the audience so that when a spinoff IS ready and is sold, James Marsters will be part of it.

I just noticed on the Angel Episode board that the author of that post that I copied from was being more or less sarcastic about his Buffy and Xander comment. Sorry to disappoint! So maybe not everyone will eventually pull for B/X but, hey, that's what fanfic is for, I guess. Remember, I said what I always wanted to see was Buffy acknowledge Xander's love for and reciprocate that love. Doesn't that count for something? -L Edited By Lee Hollins at 3/31/2003 5:49:00 PM.

I just posted the review for the tepid, harmless series Black Sash. I'm not 100% sure they'll like it (although I followed their guidelines to the letter): just because I've never posted one before and therefore can't be certain that they'll take it. But I made the deadline of less than 20 hours after the show aired, so I would expect the review would be up by tomorrow afternoon.
I'll check from time to time and see if I see it.
Thanks in advance to those who had the delight of catching this bland show at my insigation, to show S'cubie solidarity.

And then again, sometimes a bite is just a bite. The fact that game-face serves as a metaphor (sometimes) doesn't mean both the thing (game-face) and what it stands for (a different physical transformation) don't exist too as independent...functions. It would be hard to bite with...
I think you get it.

Lee, I think one should establish what episode a quote came from, or cite a particular essay of Spring's by name, to pin down the source as specifically as possible, but since this is just for enjoyment, I don't think footnotes or a bibliography is either necessary or appropriate.
Somebody else might have a different opinion, but each of us is on his/her own as to the format of the essay, and that would include whether or not to do footnotes/bibliography. Nobody's gonna throw them away if you do them, but you'd only do them if you really (for some inconceivable reason) WANT to.

Nan, thank you for your kind words about my humble efforts. Gotta say this one grew with the telling. I had no idea where it was going until it took me there.
I agree with you about the digression about Nikki & Robin's probably living conditions, but it would have been a whole other essay to try to get into. I might even extrapolate that Nikki might have partially engineered her own death from two facts, 1) Spike's assertion that all Slayers have a secret death wish (which, given the living conditions we've seen might not be that hard to buy.) and 2) Nikki's knowledge that if she dies, Robin's living conditions have to improve even if it's only Social Services that takes over his care. This is pure extrapolation based upon my observations, not a theory I necessarily espouse. Like I said, an entire essay in its own right.
Running a comparison with William/Anne's living conditions is a third essay. I'd have to write a whole book to cover all of it (not that it's such a terrible idea.)
Also, I don't know for a fact that Anne piled her abuse on Spike with the intentsion of forcing independence upon him. My theory is based upon the her assertions as a living woman and my own experiences with parenthood. Also, the loving look she gives him even as she crumbles to dust, so unlike the look of surprise or anger that most vampires have.
Is Spike responsible for killing a loving mother? No matter how you slice it, he is. Before he dusted her, he had killed Anne in the process of siring her. And it has to join all his other crimes in the guilt-mess that is his conscience.

Why do I keep wanting to call this series "Back Slash?"
Very disconcerting.

First of all, Spring, you're a wonder. Layer upon layer of fascinating stuff in your essay. I'd completely forgotten about the rather obvious symbolism of the gift of Pez. Thanks for reminding me.
I also appreciate the nice comment about my latest chapter. Frankly, it's not anywhere near as satisfying for me on a personal level as the last couple, but I had to set up the showdown. That's not always very interesting. I tried to put some banter in there between Buffy and Spike to spice things up a little, but after rewriting it about five times I decided I'd just bite the bullet and put it out there. It does it's job and moves the plot along.
As always, thanks to everyone for taking the time to read it. It'll get better. I think. :-)
Patti, I just received my Buffy magazine. I can't thank you enough for this gift. Great interviews with a lot of great people, and a cool Xander/Buffy poster.
I just love JM's sidebar quote in appreciation of Xander. I want to hug the guy if I ever see him. Hopefully Xander and Spike will get an opportunity to show each other some respect on camera before we lose them in this incarnation.
Lee, thanks for the little pick me up regarding Buffy and Xander. I read an interview with Doug Petrie recently on Slayage where one of his regrets in never seeing Buffy give him a chance.
If I were going to meet one person, it would be Joss Whedon. First of all, I'd thank him for changing how I look at my life and my place in the world.
Secondly, I'd ask him what specifically caused Buffy to place Xander in a brotherly place in her heart rather than a romantic one, never to see him otherwise.
I've speculated before that perhaps Joss wanted to show one genuine friendship between a man and a woman without romantic strings on television. Disregarding a few bumps in the road he did this with Buffy, Willow and Xander. I suppose a part of me should feel good about that.
One last thing. I've noticed in my fanfic that I like witty banter between Buffy and Spike. Is it me, or is Spike a lot more fun and less cranky in my universe? I think I may have tossed a few sprinkles of Xander into Spike's personality without meaning to. I like it. Buffy and Spike would have a lot of fun together if most of their angst was left behind.

I've enjoyed Bag of Bones by Shadowlass, but it hadn't been updated since about last November, if I'm recalling right. I just got a post saying that it's been updated on the allaboutspike site. The URL: www.allaboutspike.com/chapter.html?id=157&expid=982Nan

Just got a post from Kim saying she'd gotten my review and they'll post it TODAY/this evening as an "extra." I'll keep an eye out and let you know when it shows up. Tomatos and rutabagas cocked and aimed. Present arms!

Didn't realize that. Too busy with watching Backslash 5 times through and running certain dialogue over and over and over...
