Alright, no more calling myself names - I'll leave that to y'all! ;-)
Spring, thanks for the post. (singing to self: Spring thinks my posts are fun, Spring thinks I'm cool, la la la la. . . Spring is cool! Wait, maybe she didn't say I was cool...oh well...la la la la.)
Seriously, you'll review my essay before I submit it? Wow, thank you so much!! I would really appreciate it - your analyses are absolutely brilliant and I would love to hear your suggestions (and I am sure there will be plenty) on how to improve the essay into the masterpiece I know that everyone will be raving over. (hears crowds chanting, "Lee, Lee, Lee...")
I'll probably email it to you this weekend. And be brutally honest - it won't faze me. When I was working on my senior paper, we had to turn in the first half for review. Well, I turned my paper in (and worked damn hard on it too!) and my professor told me it was a "piece of shit." And this was my absolute favorite professor! He was right though - it was awful. The paper I ended up turning in was much, much better and I even got to present it at our school's Honor Day. So, critique away when you get it!
Thanks Spring!!

Only have a minute, but I've got to share this and it does relate to JM. My birthday is Wed (please ignore it), but my older sister (the Lewis, Dunnett fan) decided that the perfect gift for me would be a personalized signed photo of James. (They may not understand my obsession, but my family must love me.) She started with his website (which is a true act of love right there on her part since she is computer-phobic) and wasn't happy with the generic photo offered there. ( ) Eventually, don't ask me how--she was raised in Pittsburgh and is now a full-blown NEW YORKER who just does not take no for an answer--- got ahold of JM's manager's phone number in LA. Went through an uncounted number of "flunkies" and reached his manager!!!! Was told it was the internet photo or nothing, where-upon she says, "Well, as long as I've got you on the phone, let me tell you about this perfect role for Mr. Marsters." AND PROCEEDS TO PITCH THE DOROTHY DUNNETT BOOKS, and the role of Francis Lymond to JM's manager. She will be following up the conversation with a fax! Oh. My. Goodness. Tears of Laughter. So, if it all happens...maybe Kathy can get her name in the credits--I'm sure she will try to.

Since this earlier post ended up not being short and sweet, check out post #48 - that one is.
Go me!

I agree with Spring, Lee--no rules. An essay should be as short or long as a bridge: as long as it needs to be to get to the other side, i.e. to do the job it was designed to do.
The scope of the topic you take up, and how finely you divide it, and how thoroughly you discuss the divisions, will determine how long the essay needs to be.
I once took up the topic of all the manifestations of Evil in the poetry of William Blake and went way over 100 pages. HUGE topic. It was fun, though.
Now I'm off to collect the new part of Mary's book.

:Diane said, "Spring, an amazing analysis, of course! Even without any Spikeage at all."
Spikeage is a good word. Diane - can you make a definition?:
SPIKEAGE: Any refernce in any media (print, film, television, audio) to Spike. Not to be confused with Marstersistics, which is the study of and contains any matter pertaining to JM as Spike or otherwise.
Example: Buffy Fanfiction may contain Spikeage has no Marstersistics. An interview with or article about JM is Marsteristic. If no mention of Spike occurs (as in a discussion of a GOTR release) then the interview is lacking in Spikeage.

e Kim has eliminated the offending post and those posts associated with it. Vlad has renamed the page. I trust that will make everyone feel more secure. I won't comment on HOW Vlad renamed it except that his point has been taken. Memorably.

I can't properly express how moved I was by your analysis. Xander has never been dissected so beautifully or accurately.
It occurred to me that I may have some things to say in response to your essay. Xander is a very tough nut to crack sometimes. Analyzing him is very much like looking at yourself in the mirror.
That's not always a ton of fun to do...at least not for me.
In all honesty, I have nothing to say but thank you. This is a deeply moving tribute to Xander and his fans. No matter what else you write, this will always be my all time favorite analysis of yours.
I'm not sure why I'm surprised by how well you captured his essence, considering the flat out brilliance of your work thus far. Yet, I was pleasantly stunned. You summed up Xander's clumsy, beautiful dignity in a way that I never could.
More often than not, when Xander speaks, Joss is speaking to us directly. I think he's trying to tell us a very simple message: only the most fortunate of people get through life without feelings of uselessness and alienation.
Xander is meant to represent us. In my personal opinion, The Zeppo is the beginning of Xander's journey to self acceptance.
The journey comes to a close in Potential, when Xander recognizes a kindred soul in Dawn. He comes to the realization that he can help her because he's finally made his way out of the abyss of his own self doubt.
This is what I meant when I said that Potential felt like a loving farewell to Xander's character back in January when it aired.
Spring, you are a Goddess. I wish I knew of a way to repay you for the gift you've given to Xander fans all over the world. Again....thank you.

Patti,
P to S/ S to sister/ sister to manager/ manager to J.
I think you left out step 2. That makes 4 degrees.
This is a good game. Who's got another one?

From the Amber Benson web site: April: OMWF DVD British fans of Buffy the Vampire Slayer will be able to purchase a DVD of the musical episode Once More, With Feeling on April 14th. This release will be UK-only at this time and will contain the full uncut episode. www.efanguide.com/~amber/calendar.htmlWhat I'd like to know...why do the other parts of the world get the Buffy products so far ahead of the U.S.A.?

A short little fanfiction just new today on All About Spike gives us a refreshing, post LMPTM encounter between Dawn & Spike, complete with (mostly) light yet meaningful conversation. I actually clapped my hands and breathed a sigh of relief after I read it. It's as close as I've gotten this season to any conflict resolution with respect to my second favorite disfunctional relationship on the show. It is called "An Open Door" by Mahaleim: www.allaboutspike.com/fic.html?id=431Check it out. It will only take you 5 minutes. deborah cohen
