Oh. My. God. That's hilarious! And, tragic. I bet Olmos felt like crap after that. Though, the blame belongs elsewhere if there is any blame to be had. Eeep! And yes, sort of funny but also, OMG, who the hell didn't/why the hell not tell him about the model being valuable? No kidding! I mean - I wonder what the script called for, and if they were used to the crew adlibbing like that, then they most certainly shoud have foreseen the possibility that Olmos would have reacted violently. Cool little behind the scenes tidbit. Thanks for sharing, Sara.

Teaser Painting over- trying to get rid of her destiny? DAMN!! Melts into a pile of goo. And it comes back. So somebody heard her? How embarrassing. Hera gets nightmares too. There's a psychiatrist. Bet s/he's working overtime. The oracle? Now Kara's projecting too. A different oracle? Love the water lighting. He knows you better than you know yourself. The only destiny I have is as a world class frak-up. Suffering good for the soul. I know a few religions like that. Freaky-deaky. You learned the wrong lesson. Confused the messenger with the message. How does Leoben know so much? Hands broken in the door.

Part I
Poor Sam. He tries so hard.
Mom told her that she was different than other kids. A warrior.
Fear gets you killed; anger keeps you alive.
How Kara got back at her. Rubber bugs on mom's shoes.
Mother was in the military too. Another connection to Lee.
Kara's hand in the door.
It was worth it though.
Awesome clouds.
The mandala
Suicide run? Or something else?

Part II
She felt an impact.
Watching battle footage again.
A boogey.
In peacetime, he'd ground us all. Ain't that the truth.
The Wall.
Love that the dead are not forgotten. Kat. Duck. Nora.
Why are there buoys on The Wall?
Seeing the mandala everywhere.
What do you hear? Nothing but the rain. Nice callback.
The model ship again.
Aurora. Dawn. A fresh start. Hope that there will be a new dawn.
The Mandala is a depiction of Aurora/Dawn?

Part III
Trust.
After all we've been through, we're right back where we started. All of this has happened before and will happen again.
Drew the mandala--> Drawn to the mandala.
Cross over.
Fear of the unknown. Death.
The medal looks like a mandala.
Six years ago... 3-4 years before the attacks?
You look so much younger. I was.
First in the family to become an officer. So mom was enlisted. Class issues again?
Felt like she belonged. For the first time?
Should have been number 1. Oy.
Deliberately frakking up in attempt to prove her mom wrong?
Cancer in her eyes? Blindness.
Kept running.
Ticking of the clock.

Part IV Mom died 5 weeks after. Very much like Angel killing his father. Kara's mom can't hurt her anymore, but she never approve of her. Kara won an award for her mandala. When you finally face death, it's beautiful. Free now to become what she really is. Never said he was Leoben. Discover what lies in the space between life and death. Exactly what D'Anna was trying to discover. I'll see you on the other side. Just let me go. Gaeta's oddly calm about this latest development. Fireworks! Tigh's flabbergasted. She went in. Now Gaeta reacts. Death hits those left behind the hardest.

Argh. This is why I don't usually start watching shows mid-series. This was a very moving ep, but since I don't know much of Kara's backstory, I felt a bit more removed. (great summary of her history, Lola!) Why did Adama destroy the ship? I mean, I know why--he was emotional and overwraught--but is there a symbolic significance? Will his ship be destroyed? There really is no dawn, no fresh start to go toward? Does that put a different spin on what Baltar said--that no one but someone with the last name of Adama will ever be in charge of the Galactica? A very good ep. Much to think about. Speaking of that scene, Greg listened to the podcast for this episode and Ron Moore told an interesting story about the filming of it. It appears Olmos got into the moment more than anyone expected, picking up the model and really smashing it against the table (or wall—I can't remember which). The thing is, no one told Olmos it was a museum-quality replica worth hundreds of thousands of dollars. And it was on loan. According to Moore, the moment Olmos busted the ship every single member of the crew went white as the blood drained from their faces. The model was insured, thankfully. But it still made for a very memorable experience for all concerned. ...Oops.

I knew about this spoiler for a long time, and was kind of hoping it wasn't true.
I loved this episode in an American Beauty sort of way. Death is beautiful. However, when coupled with humanity on the brink of extinction, it's rather disturbing. Also, constrast with Kara's "fight 'em until we can't" philosophy at the end of Lay Down Your Burdens II. Also, makes me think of Athena and Adama discussing "being worthy of surviving."
Loved the stuff we got on Kara's mother, and that she wasn't just straight up abusive. It was more complicated and twisted than that. More real and harder to hate.
All the info that we got in this episode strongly suggests to me that Kara's one of the Final Five. Or something. Her mom was involved in the first Cylon War. And what does she know about Kara that we don't?
Gaeta's practical non-reaction to Kara's death was a little suspicious to me, though I don't think he is that emotional in general.
The Kara/Lee scenes in this episode were lovely. It's more than sex or lust or romance.
And does everybody have some one else stuck in their head?

Some one on lj made some connections to this episode and the Starbuck character arc from the original series here.

Also, "all this has happened before and will happen again" seems like a promise that Kara will come back somehow.

Part IV Mom died 5 weeks after. Very much like Angel killing his father. Kara's mom can't hurt her anymore, but she never approve of her. Very good comparison. She was always stuck in the last moment she'd had with her mom. Death removed the possibility of the relationship changing. **nods vigorously** Interesting parallel, isn't it?

It's making me wonder if the Final Five will all turn out to be . . . some kind of pre-destined connection point between the humans and the cylons. It's starting to seem that way, isn't it?

Was very moved by Maelstrom. Had heard in general tv news that Katie had finished her filming for the season with this one so ... knew something was up. But I feel with all the destiny talk & repeating the "happened before and will happen again" line that we have heard before in other contexts that this is not the "end" of Starbuck. I'm sure she will reappear somehow / in some form - just as I felt in my heart that "Not Fade Away" was not a forever, inescapable end if Joss wanted to pick up again in some form. By the way, I missed this in viewing but I read that Kara's mom was named Socrata Thrace. Gives new meaning to the term Socratic method of instruction. leftylady
