Yay congratulations to meeeeeeee: I actually managed to sleep in!
Julia, of course it was with the aid of melatonin and benadryl, but I was so exhausted and full of grass pollen that I'm not even hung over, much.

I'm looking forward to the new Torchwood...but I think that's the only summer program I'm adding. Don't get Starz. Same problem as Showtime shows like True Blood -- although I don't think Jim would sit through that one -- I"d have to watch on my own. I think he would watch Torchwood if we got it, too bad. ???Uh, True Blood's on HBO.

Please for S'cubie vibes: Allison picked up a rental car at 9:30 tonight. Hopes to pack and load (some tonight? ?), leave in the morning, visit one aunt in VA, then on to visit friends in NC for the night, then another aunt in eastern TN on Sat and arrive here Sat. night. So, a bit edge of the seatness for the next 48 hours as she drives long distances on her own in a rental car. She's YOUR kid, she'll be fine. But vibes sent anyway for worried moms.

The only ones we really pay for are in the tier that includes basic cable, ESPN, BBC and National Geo and we may lose those last two when the 6 month "trial" is up and the price goes back to normal.

Long day. Very, very long day. Fluffycat started banging on the door around 4:50 AM. I staggered to the door, grabbed the spray bottle, and nailed the Pestilent Feline. Ten minutes later, she tried again and got the same response. They got fed at 5:30, as is customary. I completed Aged Mum's shopping, checking the soda aisle just on the off chance, and found that Ralphs has diet Vernors again. I guess my complaint to management, and, as it turned out, that of one of the checkers in defense of the customers, did some good. So I bought her two more six-packs because it was on sale, and she drinks a lot of the stuff. Husband and I spent the day at Aged Mum's; we got the livingroom cleaned up - lugged boxes of books back up to the attic because there's no point in keeping them accessible when her book-buyer guy can't take them home yet, reorganized behind her desk to make space for her important file boxes, and got the fan into the high window for the summer. Which turned into a massive enterprise requiring unplugging and replugging various and sundry lights here and there. It's an old house, and all the plug-ins are of the two-prong variety, so there needed to be adaptors. But at least we got rid of the very dangerous frayed extension cord. Also I have the ancestral Masonic sword to mail to my brother in Canada as soon as I find proper packing materials, and a small square ancestral table to find room for here. It's a nice table with a marble top, very sturdy, but we'll have to move things around for it. Very tired, very achy, very hot, and not the good kind of hot. I'm trying not to worry about the future right now; Aged Mum needs full-time care, and she's getting more helpless because she won't go out and she won't do any of her exercises, and the house really isn't safe, and at some point she's going to run out of money. But I just can't deal with that right now, so I'm trying to put it away for later. Right now I have Younger Daughter wisdom teeth removal coming up next weekend. Sufficient unto the day, and all that.

Speaking of my dad, he died in 1981, at the age of 80. It will be 30 years in September. However, earlier this week, I was having a dream that someone was trying to break into my house, and I woke myself up, yelling "DAD!!!" I actually yelled it, loudly, in the darkness of my bedroom, with only me and my little dog to hear. I remember thinking how strange it was, that I should be yelling for my father. And I remember thinking that if there was anyone really trying to break in, they would be scared away by my yelling, since they wouldn't know that Dad couldn't really come help. And then I fell right back to sleep. Maybe he was there, looking out for you? That you fell right back to sleep seems to indicate you almost immediately felt some comfort. If I was having such a vivid, unsettling dream to the point that it woke me up, I don't think I would have gone back to sleep for many, many hours! But then, I rarely even remember dreaming, let alone the content of my dreams.

Just learned from my cousin that one of the last of the old-timers - one of the old-world types who, like my dad, would make his own wine and prosciutto and sausage, etc - i.e., her father - died today. He was 95, and my dad's cousin. He was the last of an amazing, truly courageous, persistent, and ceaslessly hardworking bunch. They cheerfully paid the price to see to it that their children and grandchildren would have fewer hardships, and many more opportunities than they were ever afforded. Where would my cousins and I all be, without them? RIP, Orlando. Your rest and reward is well-earned. RIP, Orlando. 95!! Wow!

Just had coffee with a guy that I had met online. This is the second such coffee date in so many weeks. Two different guys, just to clarify. Neither were what I would call particularly successful. I mean, nice guys, as far as I can tell, but just...not for me. The first guy I coffeed with was married for many years and it just seems like he wants someone to fill the empty slot, and he's not so very particular about who that person is.
Coffee Date Number 2 was pretty much a dud all around. In fact, he made Coffee Date Number 1 seem downright scintillating! One of the first things he said (in a overly loud voice that drew some weird looks) were that he had Googled me, and then proceeded to rattle off my current job, my past jobs, and where I went to college. OK, that's a bit creepy and off-putting. I mean, I understand the desire to want to know more about people you meet online, but he didn't have to report MY LIFE back to me like he was Veronica Mars. Criminy.
*sigh* It's just really hard putting myself out there, and then when I do, I just feel so dang disappointed. I hope it gets better. Soon. *sigh*

Hey, all! Is everyone planning all sorts of fun stuff for the 4th? Me, I'm gonna go all low key and lazy at home, I'm thinkin'. Hey, you guys can give me suggestions! We're gonna do a bake off at work - cookies and bars. With real judges and so on - looking at taste, creativity/imagination (in the recipe) and presentation. What are your thoughts?
