I've never understood the "if you believe X, you're saved and going to heaven for eternity; if you don't believe X, then you're doomed" belief. I've heard SOME Christians profess this in a way that suggested that since they had belief X, no matter WHAT they did, they were saved. And since Person A did not have belief X, no matter WHAT they did, they weren't saved.
But most Christians do NOT seem to "preach" in this manner. Just saying "I believe X" doesn't mean anything by itself. You aren't going to heaven just because you are baptized and you say you believe X. Your actions must reflect your beliefs - they really aren't your beliefs, otherwise.
When it comes to people who don't have Christian beliefs - it seems to me that the joy you discover and experience in life is all about your actions and choices, not a specific religious belief. And I believe the same is true about the after life.
