One more thing about the House finale I keep forgetting to mention: Speaking of Holmes/House parallels, and in regards to the way the show ended, two words: Reichenbach Falls.
Which I'm sure everybody else has already said by now, but whatever... I hadn't thought about it, but you're right!

I am doing a useful. I'm going through old papers and seeing what can be tossed and/or shredded. Go you, slay those usefuls! I got some more paper sorted and then Bob and I went to the mall to walk since it's getting too hot here to walk outside. We also ate a healthy meal at Le Petit Bistro. I hardly know me. I'd better eat some ice cream or I'll think I'm reforming altogether.

Day ending better than it began. I just ate half a single-serving Dreyer's Double Fudge Brownie ice-cream cup, which I put in a nice bowl so it looked like more. And I put whipped cream on top. The other half is back in the freezer for anyone who might want it (but not Patches ). Anne,

Dang. It's hot! 84 degrees at 10 p.m.? In May? Can't imagine how hot August will be. Did you all see this about Matt Smith? Awesome! I hope you all have a great holiday weekend! I have no set plans, but I'm thinking a dip in my SIL's pool will be on the agenda.

Jim's work partner (sort of boss in that he's the medical doctor so even though they are listed as Co-directors of the Center for P atient and P rofessional Ad vocay the other guy gets paid more) was mentioned in USA Today today: www.usatoday.com/news/opinion/forum/story/2012-05-21/house-md-doctors-disruptive-behavior/55118270/1It's a review of the 8 years of the TV show "House" and mentions Gerry's work with dysfunctional doctors. Excuse me if I think Gerry didn't invent it all by himself. Half way thru this paragraph: Spurred by the patient safety movement, the medical community is addressing the problem of antisocial doctors. Gerald H*****n, M.D., of V University Medical Center has created a program that begins with a "cup-of-coffee con versation" but escalates to the loss of hospital privileges for physicians who fail to respond to education and counseling. 'Bout damn time. He gets huge points with me having been a recipient of the anti-social doctor treatment when my dad was in the hospital. I don't know if I said it on here, but when Zak went in for his operation (he's still kicking, after I saved him from dying post-op, but you know that ), the vets showed more compassion and understanding about Zak and how we were feeling than the doctors did when my dad was in the hospital. There's something really, and I do mean really, wrong with that picture. So, good for him. I'm very happy to see this.

*nods* Well, the publicity is great and Jim is perfectly happy to let G be the name that is out front -- it really is a perfect partnership and I don't think either guy could have done it without the other. Oops. Didn't read well enough. Kudos to both Jim and the doctor! I'm glad they're addressing this.

Oops. Didn't read well enough. Kudos to both Jim and the doctor! I'm glad they're addressing this. Yeah, Jim was doing a lot of stuff educating docs who worked with diabetes patients about how to listen and ask questions and answer questions and motivate and work on compliance and all that, which lead to him doing a lot of teaching with incoming med students about communication skills. Then he hooked up with G and they developed the computer/statistical programs to identify the doctors receiving the most complaints and malpractice suits. Then they worked out the intervention techniques (which Jim could never have done on his own because med. docs. aren't going to be terribly open to being "corrected" by a non-MD. It's been a 20 year journey but they have gone from the 2 of them and a couple of min. wage "coders" (people who read the medical complaints and reduce them to numbers) to employing 35 folks and traveling all over the US (and now internationally as well). They also have 10 years of stats from Vandy and their earliest client hospitals showing an obvious decline in complaints and mal-practice suits so: win for the hosp, the insurance companies AND the patients. They were also one of the earliest med schools/hosp to challenge the "never admit you were wrong" culture.

So, I don't know about you guys, but I've gotten seriously addicted to Holmes on Homes, and Holmes Inspection on HGTV. Do any of you guys watch it? There is something so awesome about Mike Holmes, fixing screwed up houses for people who are hard up, suffered natural disasters, or got taken for a ride. Plus, there is the added bonus of me now being able to notice when some things aren't done correctly. Learning things from TV, who knew?
And I know I might be watching it a bit too much, because I watched another HGTV show "Property Brothers," and thought, "Mike Holmes would eat these two for lunch." Those two are the polar opposite...they say they are helping renovate, but they don't do proper inspections, nor do they seem to listen to the homeowners. They are like glorified house flippers; covering up serious problems with paint and fancy furniture.

And in the Douchebag of the World, Texas Edition, I offer you: Honor Student Supporting Siblings Arrested For Being Too Exhausted For SchoolThis girl, whose parents abandoned the family, is the sole support of her siblings. The judge, Lanny Moriarty, who was brought up on ethics violations three years ago, said: "if you let one (truant student) run loose, what are you gonna’ do with the rest of ‘em? Let them go too?” Yes, 'cause clearly she was just sitting around smoking pot and playing on her XBox. Not working two jobs while going to high school.

An observation:
We were recently at a concert given by the Nashville Symphony Orchestra for VU employees. They did a selection of John Williams' music.
Also, right now Spike TV is showing the original (enhanced?) Star Wars. A HUGE part of the draw of that movie is the music. Fantastic music, instantly recognizable, worth owning as a sound track aside from the movie.
This is not true of The Avengers. (is there recognizable music in Serenity?)
It may just be that John Williams wrote music for my era and I wouldn't enjoy current music.
