My friend Jerusha, screenname Enigmaticblue, organised a small Christmas ficathon and the entries can be found at www.freewebs.com/enigmaticblue/holiday.htmDefinitely not dismal. Jerusha's own entry is excellent; and there are also entries from me, Helga von Nutwimple, Kindred, Holly, Josephine Martin, and others. Don't look there for horror or major angst; the terms of the ficathon specified holiday fluff. I'm hoping to have some time to work through that ficathon list this week, but I have teenagers to exploit and much dust in high places, and so will be pointing at things and using my authority voice instead. Julia, having been gone most of the day

Post by Anne, Old S'cubie Cat on Dec 30, 2004 23:03:21 GMT -5
A while back, I was remarking that the best non-slash fic I was reading was friends locked, and how much I wanted to share it. It's just been added to London Calling, although it's not yet on the table of contents pages. It's a fic by Lori in the "Investigations and Acquisitions" verse, where Giles has returned to England Post Chosen, with a very much alive Anya, and taken up a private occult services business, with occassional cooperation with MI-5. "Swallow's Nest" takes place seven years down the road, and is a domestic mystery with ties to both Dorothy Sayer's Tallboys and Conan-Doyle's Hound of the Baskervilles. PG-13 Part 1 www.myarseisnotpansy.co.uk/lori/ianda/nest1.htmlPart 2 www.myarseisnotpansy.co.uk/lori/ianda/nest2.htmlJulia, literate, humorous, and one of the most skin-crawlingly creepy OC's I've ever read Julia, I've been meaning to thank you for rec'ing this one - well-written, charming, and believable. Anne, I think the Great Cat may be a nod to Elizabeth Peters' Amelia Peabody books

Julia, I've been meaning to thank you for rec'ing this one - well-written, charming, and believable. Anne, I think the Great Cat may be a nod to Elizabeth Peters' Amelia Peabody books I'm not sure if Lori recommended this as one of her influences, but it may be. She is one of the writers I am GLAD has an OTP, because the intensity of her commitment to Giles and Anya as a pairing translates into fic which is deeply felt and carefully considered. And she manages to preserve the humor which is essential to both of their characters without making either of them foolish, except in real and believable momentary human folly. Julia, something I waited months to be able to recommend!

So, is anyone else reading the new author at The Crypt: anon462.
She (he?) did a short fic called "Try Harder" featuring Buffy beating on the Immortal (when she finds out he knew Spike was alive)--very realistic Buffy-fight action.
Now I'm reading "Reunions". It's up to chapter 20 I think (I'm on #17) -- in two days posting. No author's notes to tell if it's done or will be Spuffy. Author joined fanfiction.net just last November, but no website or LJ links.
I'm enjoying it quite a bit. Well written, interesting and plausible premise, nearly 9 years post NFA.
Curious to hear what others think or if anyone knows anything else about anon462.

Curious to hear what others think or if anyone knows anything else about anon462. I liked "Try Harder", although I did think it was a little over the top, and started off by enjoying "Reunions". As it went on, however, the quality of the writing seemed to deteriorate steadily and the situation became more and more contrived. It is turning into overblown melodrama and I doubt that I'll read on beyond Chapter 20 unless I get really desperate for fic. The best WIP of which I'm aware at the moment is "Twelve Days", ongoing in the LiveJournal community 12daysspillyria, www.livejournal.com/userinfo.bml?user=12daysspillyriaco-written by Cass, Bogwitch, and Hesadevil. Illyria takes Spike on a journey through the 12 days of Christmas, in a search for the meaning behind the festivities that is touching, funny, and occasionally heartbreaking. In other news Enigmaticblue has started a new story that looks extremely promising, but there's only a Prologue and one chapter done so far. "Useless Desires", her first ever Spara story. www.freewebs.com/enigmaticblue/desirespro.htmI would also recommend Elsa Frohman's new WIP "Three Kings, also looking very promising, but her site is down tonight and so I can't quote the url. Speaker-to-Customers Thanks for the input and other recs. I haven't so far read much Spillyria because I'm pretty confirmed in my S/B preference and Spillyria seems to say that Spuffy is dead and over. Likewise, if it were anyone other than enigmaticblue I wouldn't even consider Spara. I saw she sort of dedicated it to you. I really appreciate her style and POV when writing. Finally, please do quote Elsa's URL when it comes back up cause I come here to find my links. Do you think she will finish (or have I missed it) her other WIP (Roman something?)?

"Twelve Days" isn't a Spillyria romance so far. I wouldn't have stuck with it if it was. As you know, I'm a Spuffy gal. Give it a try...it's excellent! I love Enigmaticblue's fic's, but I just can't get into Spara at all. Elsa's "Three Kings" is great. The link to the chapters posted so far (in her memories) is below: www.livejournal.com/tools/memories.bml?user=elsaf&keyword=Three+Kings&filter=allI don't think it's friends locked.

It's not Friends locked. The site is back up but she hasn't put "Three Kings" up there yet anyway; so LiveJournal is the only source for the story at the moment.

Actually, there's some very fine Spara WIPs out there, by Speaker himself and by Ezagaaikwe, both of which are poted at the spiketara community on lj (linked in posts above, including the lj community list on p.5) and, proportionately, very little Spuffy worth reading. I'm a Spuffy at heart, most days, but I'd rather read good Spara than undistinguished Spuffy any day. Seconding, with a few reservations having to do with some serious anachronisms in the first two chapter, Speaker's endorsement of Twelve Nights. Sending a quick heads up to Rob and any other fans of Faith. (Meant to do this a while back and kept forgetting.) A Live Journal spot for all sorts of stories, info, etc. about Faith. Looked like a fair amount of Faith/Xander fiction, too. It's called Facets of Faith. www.livejournal.com/community/facets_of_faith/Lola

From Elsa Frohman, a slight but pleasant Christmas tale: "The Three Kings," complete in 5 parts on her Live Journal: www.livejournal.com/users/elsaf/ETA: Which I now see has been talked about by Speaker-to-Customers and Cal, above.
