The fine "Career Advancement"--vampire Giles!--by Two Ladies of Quality has updated with Chapter 3. It, in turn, is a sequel to the excellent alternate-Glory arc long tale "Career Change" which I highly recommend. Not much Giles yet in the sequel, but it's to come, I'm sure. Both are to be found at: www.angelfire.com/rebellion/riani1/fic.htmlAuthors update slowly, but it's worth the wait. Knew I was forgetting to check something for updates; thanks Nan, and a very foreboding update it is. Julia, off to play about in 3D for a while

Warning, Warning WIP Started reading this at Sinister Attraction but the format at Fanfic.net is easier to deal with: www.fanfiction.net/s/1945667/1/Helga von Nutwimple, When in Rome. Full ensemble BtVS/AtS, post NFA. Solid B; maybe raising to A- in some phrases and plotting but mostly exposition-through-dialogue. Gets better and better from chapter to chapter, though, and explores some possible explanations for behavior which is otherwise a bit murky. Julia, up to 22 chapters, and has been updated regularly Julia, thanks for the recommend. She's witty, verbally nimble, and very persuasive. I'd avoided her stuff (she's a NEW author!) because of the stupid name. I was wrong! VERY enjoyable! I'll go sample her other WIPs now.

Two Ladies of Quality have embarked on a historical. In this one, "The Scourge of Europe" is a band of mercenaries currently in the service of the Borgia Pope. They are captained by Angelus, whose right-hand man is Spike: Guglielmo il Sanguinante. Giles is a priest of the Holy Inquisition and a secret mage; Xander (Sandro) is a naive young priest in over his head even *before* people start trying to kill him. The story's description by the authors: 1498, Renaissance Italy. Intrigue and magic and danger in the Rome of the Borgias and the Inquisition, where a mercenary called Guglielmo il Sanguinante stumbles across a young novice named Alexander. Utter AU, rated PG. These Ladies write slowly but well, with a sharp eye for detail and persuasive characterizations. This promises to be fun all the way. Two chapters are currently done. It's at their website: www.angelfire.com/rebellion/riani1/fic.html

Got this from a recommendation in Estephia's journal. Post NFA, bleak and depressing, yet well written and interesting concepts and dramatic structure. This is a disorganized memories page, and the fics I'm "recommending" (because not going to reread them again, because sad is not my thing) are the "Things Left Undone" entries. www.livejournal.com/tools/memories.bml?user=minnow1212&keyword=Angelfic&filter=allJulia, "sorry, but your work does not fill my current emotional needs"

On the other hand, we have: www.livejournal.com/users/ljs/86095.html#cutid1Lori, of London Calling, a Giles/Anya hurricane fic, set in a story where they live in the Bahamas and have some great mystical purpose... haven't read the Deep Down stuff, yet, saving that for a later date. But, as a thing in itself entertaining/comforting and some days you need that, or at least I do. Julia, discomforted by reality (and modifying weeks later when the idea of not knowing LJS from Paratti makes the hair at the back of my neck stand up

Estephia, a competent writer, has an Ethan/Lindsey WIP going, titled "Dealing." It's enjoyable and, I would think, of particular interest to BE, so I've IM'ed her about it. Here's the link: www.estepheia.com/viewstory.php?sid=92There are several parts to it now--6 or so--and as Estephia finishes whatever she begins, I wouldn't be worried it's a WIP. It will be completed.

I posted a slew of fanfic recommendations at my LJ this a.m. All the readings are Fanged Four, pre-series, and I've sorted them by 'ships. Here's the URL: www.livejournal.com/~makd. Enjoy!

Somehow, although I was reading this at the Spara LJ community, I spaced out on recommending it as a thing in itself. archive.shriftweb.org/archive/29/ogdennash.htmlNobody writes Spike/Tara as well as AnnHedonia. This is not quite as absolutely perfect as the three series fics I recommended earlier (titles forgotten, sorry, that kind of morning) but has the same quality of irresistable attraction and understanding that she's so good at communicating. Julia, must go make potato salad and apple strudel now, for The Programmer comes to bbq fish later today

Found another new, good writer: Speaker-to-Customers (a Kzin alias). I found her work at the Crypt, from which you can access her home page and more fiction, though it's *also* at the Crypt (don't ask, I don't understand, myself). She has a novel complete, Hungry Heart, that's the first part of an intended trilogy collectively entitled Pandora's Boxer. Her work is facile, brisk, imaginative, literate. Hungry Heart is an alternative Season 4 of BtVS with the assumption that Spike is fully accepted by the Scoobies and Buffy through being credibly thrown back in time, remembering nothing beyond, when he went to get his soul and become "what she deserves." The author has a tendency to make everything that's bad come out all right, but it's not saccharine, and every now and again the writing has an edge--particularly in her excellent take on the dream sequence in Restless. Here's the main page of the Crypt. Look for her name, then her website. www.the-crypt.net/

Individual fic archive list, maybe after both kids are back in school? Julia, because amassing and evaluating these things takes more concentration than I've got right now

Another new-to-me writer, SunnyD_lite. Can't spell, occasionally punctuates, but blazingly intelligent, spot-on dialogue and characterization, inventive plots. Just brace yourself for the typos (typically breath for breathe, of for off, and that sort of thing). Definitely worth the reading! The Crypt has more of her stuff than the Sandbox, where she says she archives. I particularly recommend Tangled Web (the untwisting of the Connor memory blackout--15 parts, complete) and its sequel, Together Again (31 parts, complete). If it's an inducement, the latter tale comes with a restored Fred...how, exactly, is never entirely clear to me.... And since the storyline veers off on its own track before the Big Dumb Plan, Gunn and Wesley are also there, although Wes is angst-ridden, per usual. Also, short piece During the Battle (Spike and Angel bicker over who gets to kill the dragon) is quite a lot of fun. That's all I've read so far, but I intend to read all her stuff to date. If you care to see her stuff at the Bloody Awful Sandlot, the URL is: www.the-sandlot.com/fic.php?mode=authorThe Crypt's URL is a couple of posts up, if you need it.
