Anybody know what's up with the archive at the-crypt.net? I keep getting "cannot find server". Is it just me? (Sometimes my computer is funky). It's been down for a few days now. Sometimes I just find it easier to keep up there than find go to individual LJs for a couple of writers. Sorry I didn't notice this before. I never used that archive, as it continually crashed my browser, but I'll try to put a question out at a couple of places and see what I get. I will say, however, that it might be worth your time to type out the entire URL, if you're going from a link in bookmarks, as sometimes those links get damaged and give false 404s. Julia, running late, and beset with time-vampires, so it may take a while.

Sometimes I just find it easier to keep up there than find go to individual LJs for a couple of writers. It came back. But I'm trying to figure out if it was coincidence that I finally (3 days) went to look for it on Jim's computer where it showed up and then suddenly it was back on mine as well. Can't see how there could possibly any connection, but personally I believe there is a strong connection between technology and magic! Sorry I didn't notice this before. One of the results of the LJ pogrom is that some people are locking down all of their fic posts; don't be surprised if suddenly there are dead links in all of the fic recs thread.
The only fics which I have rec'ced which might fall into question for age related reasons have been some very well written G/O ones which could not be described as advocating pederasty by any stretch of the imagination. However, people are nervous over small things; I'm rather freaked about having Drusilla call Angelus "Daddy" even though that is a reflection of canon.
Julia, do be aware, there are going to be consequences of this foolishness over a very long period.

Speaking of which, I also can't get to "Sleep While I Drive", any suggestions?

Speaking of which, I also can't get to "Sleep While I Drive", any suggestions? In general: if you're on LJ, friend Mireille719, and comment to her top open post asking to be friended back- friend me, I'll friend you back, and stand up for your reality and non-weirdness. She's talking about a fic community, and about updating her old archive (many writers are doing this). I'll try to figure out who's headed where and post updates, but I'm hoping the furor will die down, LJ will wake up and reassure people who are not doing anything wrong that they have nothing to fear, and we can go on as before. However, I've got no good feeling about this; it's possible that Live Journal has managed to severe an artery when it thought it was just shooting itself in the foot, and fandom will be reshaped over the next few months. Julia, which I think sucks mightily, but witch hunts tend to be heavy on the unintended consequences.

Just have to comment.
You know, reading nwhepcat's most recent offering is a lot like reading a post-NFA comic book. Except no visuals, AND it has a new chapter every day, AND it (hopefully, if she stays true to pattern) has 100 or more installments, AND (with the no visuals) the dialogue is to die for.
Oh, and did I mention the DAILY fix?
Plus---Julia's once sentence daily summaries are also worth the reading.

And the daily updates are very good for those of us who need a fic fix.

She's on my all time top 10 (5?) list of BtVS fanfic authors. [And since she's not really a B/S writer that makes it all the more remarkable.]

If it is enjoyable as this fic, I may have to check it out.

May I ask all you guys to post your favorite Buffy/Spike fanfic?
Also, do you find that reading fanfic changes your ideas of the characters over time, or do you keep the TV characters separate from the fanfic ones?

May I ask all you guys to post your favorite Buffy/Spike fanfic? Also, do you find that reading fanfic changes your ideas of the characters over time, or do you keep the TV characters separate from the fanfic ones? To answer your last question first, I think that while fanfic may stir ideas for me, give me interesting ways to think about the show, I don't think it so much change my ideas about the characters so much as just let me explore other "what if's". But then, my ships are all very non-canon so that means fic is more of a side exploration of the show, like a parallel path, so to speak. OK. On to the fic - Being a slasher at heart, I don’t have tons of S/B fics to rec, but I’ve got a few I’d suggest. First I have to toot the horns of some of the S’cubies, at our fanfictional area here – but picking out the excellent Spuffy fic amongst the many fine stories. (I recommend all the other fiction there too, of course, but I’ll focus on the ones that are primarily Spuffy, since that’s what you were asking about.) Click on the top shelf of the bookcase and you’ve got access to Nan Dibble’s “Blood” series. A wonderful long saga in her own version of the Buffyverse. Sadly, of course, the series ended with Nan’s death and so the final story is unfinished and we’ll never know what further adventures awaited the gang. Click on the second shelf and you find Spring’s amusing and lyrical short stories; not all of them are Spuffy but all of them are good! Click on the third shelf to find: “Yule Pay For This” by the fabulous Rob Sorensen, stepping away from his usual Xander/Faith focus to create a Secret Santa gift for our own Erin; the short but poetical “Cleansheets” by Vlad; and the epic “Journey’s” by Mary Statz. Now, if that is sufficient bribery to entice you to stretch a bit, I’ll recommend a favorite of mine. A Spuffy story with a touch of slash. Herself NYC writes some fine Spuffy and you can find it here, but I particularly love her two paired stories that have a Spuffy heart and ultimate Spuffy ending, but include a Spike/other male character storyline as well: What She Deserves and its sequel Lovingkindness. It has a core of pure sweet pain and a Spike and Buffy that feel very real. Now that I’ve babbled muchly, I’ll let the true S/B fic readers chime in with their recs, which I’m sure are much more to your point than this babble of mine.

Also, do you find that reading fanfic changes your ideas of the characters over time, or do you keep the TV characters separate from the fanfic ones? I don't keep up with fanfic the way I used to, but I'll give you some that come to mind: Anything by Cousinjean: www.allaboutspike.com/auth.html?au=102A big favorite: The Butterfly EffectAnd Salieri has the best Buffy voice I've ever encountered: www.echonyc.com/~stax/Buffy/salieri/index.htmI also love Nautibitz' stories, which you can find at nautibitz.com. My personal favorite is All Over It. Further, she has been asking readers for fanfic suggestions at her nautifc journal. I've discovered quite a few good ones here: community.livejournal.com/nautific/25118.htmland here: community.livejournal.com/nautific/25493.htmlThose should get you started. Have fun! Oh, and as to your second question, I don't think fic changes my idea of characters exactly, but if I'm unhappy with the way something played out on screen, then sometimes I'll find that a fic can help me better understand the characters' motivations for what they did or said. Salieri is great at writing stories in this category. I think that is one of the best things about fanfic: it can help me see things in a new light, or at least give me other possible viewpoints. This might explain why I don't read as much fanfic as I used to--I have come to terms with the direction the show took, and I have great love for it in its final form.

The reality that Buffy ended before Angel is starting to bum me out. I just wish they'd been able to reunite her and Spike. It's really kind of hard for me to buy that he wouldn't go find her. And as it stands when she finds out he's alive, she should kick his vamp ass to the Sunnydale crater and back. And then shag him senseless. This is equally apparent to me. There's a great fic by Annaross which should be in the Fic Recs area on the not-slash thread and about four years ago this month in date, and I'm sorry but my current level of functioning is not going to permit me to find you the link; it starts out with a post NFA Spike, Angel and Illyria fleeing Los Angeles, and thence is something which you should wait to read. Julia, and I suspect that sentence is impossible to decode: Vicodin whole pill, three nights in a row doesn't improve my writing abilities Here is the link to Anaross' memories: www.livejournal.com/tools/memories.bml?user=anarossI think Julia might be talking about the one titled "My Life Closed Twice" but I'd rec any of her BtVS fics. It's undoubtedly one of the 5 fics with over 10 chapters, and probably all of those are worth reading. Also, I think st_salieri has some post NFA fics: here is her fic page www.echonyc.com/~stax/Buffy/salieri/index.htmwhich has the added advantage of also providing links to nwhepcat's fic, herself's fic and others. Or, you can go to her LJ at: st-salieri.livejournal.com/or her memories: www.livejournal.com/tools/memories.bml?user=st_salieriAnd you can never go wrong reading anything written by Barb C aka rahirah I can't think of post NFA fic off the top of my head, but she has quite a universe going that starts post The Gift. Here is her fic website: sleepingjaguars.com/buffy/bufindex.htmand here is her LJ, you can click on the tags down the left side to hunt for fic entries: rahirah.livejournal.com/I'll put this on the discussion page where I see other responses have recently been made. ============================== And, there really is nothing else out there quite like "The Butterfly Effect". It's one of a handful that I reread and reread.
