I liked Robin Williams in Awakenings, and the rest - well . . . I just always find myself thinking, when I see a movie of his, that the movie would be better with someone else it in. I thought he was especially badly miscast in Garp and in Bicentennial Man. I can't take much Robin Williams - small doses is a good way to put it. It . . . sort of pains me to watch him. I just can't describe it. I feel the same way, Spring. I am always on guard, kind of internally wincing, waiting for him to just completely go over the top. and...he usually does.

Absolutely agree with you there, Becky. Yay, us!
And that being said, I have to reply to something Gail said in Part 18:Gail, I wish I could introduce you to my best friend, who's a Jewish Republican on the Upper West Side of Manhattan!
Laura (another fellow Republican) ;D In case anybody cares, which is dubious, I'm a political anarchist. My position is something along the lines of, Get the hell out of my face and let me do my thing, so long as it's not at anybody else's expense. Given that I'm currently living on unemployment, charity, and my wits, that may seem hypocritical. But since I've been working for over 40 years, paying into the system with only minor grousing, and have only been on unemployment twice (including now), I figure I have a right to my political beliefs even though, at the moment, they seem self-serving.

Chapter 19 of EME is now posted on AllAboutSpike. Presumably the other sites carrying it will have it up soon: I sent it to them yesterday morning.

If you liked him in Gladiator, check him out in LA Confidential. Even though, like Cider House Rules, the movie compresses several book years into one, it's still worth a rental. Russell Crowe and Guy Pearce, mmm - gotta love those Australians. Been away for a week and I'm sure I missed a lot of good stuff (all of 18 - I have no time to catch up!) But it's good to be back and even though work is manic right now I'm gonna make a real effort to slack off and post! I'm right there with you guys on Russell Crowe and John Cusack too. I prefer smart guys, but Russell is definately too sexy in both Gladiator and L.A. Confidential. As for the discussions on liberals, conservatives, Republicans and Democrats... try being an American in Europe. No matter how liberal you are half the time I end up feeling like a big old war mongerer from the far right. And these guys are so up to speed on politics and issues that sometimes I just end up sputtering for something intelligent to say (and not succeeding).

Now see, I like Robin Williams and I think he could go down in history as one of the 5 funniest men of the last 20 years of the 20th century. On that note, yes, sometimes he does go over the top. However, it's all him.. it's all natural Robin. He's a funny, hyper man.
Now, compare that to Jim Carrey, who while I don't actually loath, I simply...don't find funny. He is always trying. *jsut shrugs* It's amazing how two similar performers can elicit such completely different emotions from me.

I wanted to reply to something Diane said (Diane is my middle name) on 18 but I can't do it now. All I was going to say is that you should see me play monoploy Whats so bad about that? Typing one-handed is hard, I don't know how my dad does it.

Laura - Could you translate your byline at the bottom? I recognize a few words but not all.
Although my name says that I am Italian, I'm not. Just formerly married to a purebred. His family was not what I knew as stereotypically Italian. They were unfriendly, unemotional, but demanding of attention.
I am a librarian in a poor school in southern NJ where more than half the staff is of Italian descent. Many of them are first or second generation Americans. They are for the most part warm, friendly, helpful and very pro-all things Italian and American. I have never seen a group of people respond so quickly to help anyone in trouble. One drove all the way to North Jersey to pick up a colleague when her car was totalled. Her husband was away on business and she had no near-by family. I called my brother once for help, but he told me to get a cab home.

I am not here. Really. Not.
The invading forces pulled back. I don't believe htey are really gone. I think they might simply be organizing another front. I am using the relative peace I am currently enjoying to send this communique back.
Casualties are heavy. First to be lost...my sense of humor. I knew he wouldn't make it...too fragile. Oh why, why is it always the good ones?
Rations are running low. Evidently they believe in the scorched earth policy. Hardly anything to be found. Must send out recon to find supplies. Ammo...low too. I am currently down to using my sharp wit.
We need reinforcements...we need entertainment. Moral is running low. Oh god, please, when will this vacation ever be over?

But it's so hard to win here sometimes... Point: sitting with a group of collegues the other day, one of whom was German, and we were slagging each other off about our countries various foibles. Then my German friend said "At least we don't start wars for no good reason". I almost bit my tongue in two trying to repress my comeback.

Some movies are more suitable for his improv-manic style of humor than others. RW is the spiritual child of Jonathan Winters, whom I always found hysterical. Jim Carey, I've liked in a few things. But the comic I never could stand at all, wince and turn away, absolutely painful, is Jerry Lewis. Embarrassment humor is, for me, a turn-off and turn-away equal to none. And the French apparently adore him. Tells me something about the French....

You aren't anywhere near Camden, are you?

Laura (another fellow Republican) ;D I had to wonder....did Dave KNOW what he was doing with the remark about liberals? After all, he did say he was into being all 'bad boy' now...maybe he was trying to start a 'ruckus'so he could try out that new petroleum jellied coat!

I lived in Crawfordsville for 8 years (not that Indiana's an awful place - most of my family live there now). It's just that there was no such thing as anonymity there and it seems like you're related to half the town by marriage or divorce. On the cool side though, there's The Race. I loved that.
